A woman has said she has seen the face of her dead grandmother over her baby inside her womb during an ultrasound scan.
Stephanie Jackson said she has been 'praying' to her gran for a baby since partner Michael had his vasectomy reversed

A pregnant woman has said she has seen the face of her grandmother in a scan of her unborn baby.

Stephanie Jackson's gran died 14 years ago but said she had been 'praying' to her for a baby because she wasn't sure if she and her partner would be able to have children.

The 32-year-old from om Knowsley Village, Merseyside, went for an 18 week scan and was told her baby boy, who is due in July, was healthy.

But Stephanie said her mother noticed the 'face' of her grandmother hovering just above the baby's head, the Liverpool Echo reported.

Her partner Michael Davies had a vasectomy before the pair met but since he had the procedure reversed last year, has been praying to her grandmother to give the couple a baby.

'I only got [the scan] done yesterday and didn't even see it. It was my mum who pointed it out to me. When I saw it I was like "oh my God!"

'She said 'there's your nan' and I was so happy. I recognised her instantly. I've been crying since yesterday. It has made me dead emotional. We lost her 14 years ago.
'I've not stopped crying. It's just amazing. I'm happy and dead positive to know 14 years on she's still around us.'

Mary Jackson died 14 years ago but Stephanie said her image can clearly been seen on the scan of her unborn child

Stephanie, who is expecting her first child with council worker Michael, said she believed her grandmother is 'looking down on me, 100 per cent'.

At the recent funeral of her uncle she said feel everyone in her family could feel 'her nan around them'  and 'everyone was touching my bump and saying this and there she was'.

'I believe this is her way of saying everything will be OK as I have been extremely worried during this pregnancy and to let us know she is still around,' said Stephanie.

Her partner is less sure, though, revealed Stephanie, who said: 'He said he can barely make something out.'

President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of doing nothing as killer herdsmen continue to wreck havoc in many parts of the country.
Governor Ayodele Fayose

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to take a firm action against the atrocious killer herdsmen but continues to offer mere condolences as Nigerians are slaughtered in their numbers.

In a report by Punch, Fayose while reacting to the latest killings by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State wondered why a retired Army General and one-time military Head of State who contested and won election on the premises of providing security to the citizens had suddenly become a lame duck.

“This is a killer government. It is shameful that Nigerians are dying daily with Buhari clueless and incompetent to handle the crisis.

“It is beyond dispute that the Buhari administration has lost the battle against insurgency and the Fulani herdsmen. Buhari is helpless as he is reduced to offering condolences on a daily basis.

“Nigerians are dying on a daily basis. Innocent souls are being wasted by herdsmen and the Buhari administration has lost all moral right to continue in office. Why is he still sitting in office? Doing what, if I may ask,” the governor said.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, said the Peoples Democratic Party government under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was a golden era compared with the APC government.

He said, “The same Jonathan administration era is now looking like the golden age of security of lives and properties in Nigeria.

“At no period since 1999 has life been this cheap. Life has become nasty, brutish, and short under the Buhari administration.”

Fayose also expressed misgivings about recent spate of controversial judgments by courts which he said gave the impression of collusion between unscrupulous judges and the Buhari administration to truncate democracy and lead the country into anarchy.

“The situation is getting so bad that we do not know whether the constitution of the country has been unofficially suspended.

“Nigerians have been unlucky with Buhari as president. He is too old, too analogue, too incompetent, too clueless and is not ready to admit and yield for a competent leader. This country has never had it this bad. Gradually, Buhari is becoming a maximum ruler,” he added.

A beautiful Oil & Gas graduate has reportedly died inside a NYSC camp in Kwara State, sparking an outpouring of grief.
Miss Eva Iche Amadi

It has been reported that a corps member has been reported dead at the Kwara orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, which is ongoing at Yikpata, Edu Local government ‎area of the state.

SaharaReporters reports that the corps member identified as Miss Eva Iche Amadi, was a graduate of Oil & Gas, University of Port-Harcourt.

She reportedly suffered a bone fraction during the morning drill on April 23 after which she was rushed to the camp clinic.

According to a corps member who spoke to Sahara Reporters on the condition of anonymity, Amadi died due to lack of adequate medical facility at the camp on Thursday.

The source said, “She suffered a fracture during the Man ‘O’ War drill and she was rushed to the clinic here on camp, but there was no medical facility. No X-Ray Machine, no drugs, nothing was there. She had to buy bandages with her own money. There was no doctor, it was the medical students here that were stationed at the clinic.”

The source stated that the distance of a hospital to the camp is part of what contributed to the unfortunate event.

“Can you imagine that the nearest hospital to this place is about 2 hours drive on high speed? We need major facilities here. Nigerian government will force us here to come and suffer and die in poor conditions," the source said.

Senator Rowland Owie has made a strong case for the immediate removal of President Muhammadu Buhari who has been accused of gross incompetence.

Senator Rowland Owie

The former Chief Whip of the upper legislative chamber and one of the leaders of Action Democratic Party, ADP, Senator Rowland Owie, has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led executive arm of government of carrying out the attack on Senate where the mace was stolen.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun, Owie condemned the invasion of the senate by thugs, alleging that the disgraceful act had the support of security agents.

The former lawmaker also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of not promoting democracy with its acts.

He called on the National Assembly to start the process of President Buhari’s impeachment immediately for spending over 469 million dollars on helicopter without approval from the National Assembly.

In his words;

“It is a desecration of the order; all those that were involved certainly committed treason. When I was looking at the newspaper, I saw the vehicle that was used.

“I asked one of my sons the name of the vehicle and he said it was ‘Infiniti’, that the car cost almost 80million. That type of vehicle is not owned by a street hawker, it is not owned by a teacher, it must be owned by a top government official. "For thugs to go through the well fortified gates of the National Assembly and then enter into the chamber of the senate where there is electronic check, it means that there was total collaboration with the security agents. From all indications what happened was supported by the executive of this country.

“For them to be able to leave the National Assembly with the mace it is a shame on this nation, it is a shame on the security agencies. It means that all the security agents were aware and they were told to stand down. "Police at the assembly are not less than 100 officers, so I don’t see how thugs could have breached the security if it wasn’t planned. All those involved should be brought to justice.

“If Nigerians don’t wake up it will be a disaster. This APC government headed by Muhammadu Buhari is not people-oriented. It is unfortunate that there are very good people inside it but they are quiet. "And when you are quiet in the face of injustice it means that the individual doesn’t have the fear of God in him. My colleagues in the National Assembly have not lived up to expectation in checking the excesses of the executive.

“The legislature is the most important tool in democracy; the legislature should endeavor to check the executive. There have been a lot of irresponsible actions taken by the executive which the senate has failed to address.” Asked what he specifically would you have loved to see the National Assembly do to the executive, Senator Owie added, “How can the National Assembly which has the authority of confirmation of appointees reject the statutory appointment of an official and then the executive goes behind to retain such person?

“How can the executive neglect the rejection of the legislature? If the Senate was not sparing the rod, the moment the executive went ahead to confirm the appointment they would have removed the allocation meant for the particular office or position, so that if the chairman works and is paid, whoever that paid him would have committed an impeachable offence.

“The executive in this government has looked down on the National Assembly time and time again. How can the president spend over 469 million dollars on helicopter without approval from the National Assembly? The Senate should immediately send Buhari a message and begin impeachment procedure against him.”

Nigerian troops were gallant enough to repel an attack by Boko Haram operatives who stormed Maiduguri in the evening to cause mayhem.

Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader

Boko Haram terrorists have launched an attack on Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, it was learnt last night.

Residents said the insurgents are in a heavy exchange of fire from Molai village on the Damboa-Biu road. A worker with Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Aliyu, said they were stranded in the office as all access roads were blocked.

Another resident said they were locked down by traffic as many people are hurriedly going home.

Details of the attack were still sketchy as at last night.

The Army have however called on the residents to remain indoors and not panic.

A statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Kingsley Samuel, said the situation was under control. It, however, urged the people to be vigilant.

The statement reads: “The public is requested not to panic and discountenance rumours of Boko Haram presence.

“You are further enjoined to please remain at home and be vigilant. The security situation in Maiduguri is under control.”

A young Nigerian woman has met her untimely death just two weeks after her university matriculation.
Miss Eke Ukam Ogholo

It is tears and pain for the family members of a 21-year-old student of Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTEC) who died from a kerosene explosion less than two weeks after her matriculation in Cross River State.

The deceased, Miss Eke Ukam Ogholo, was killed on Wednesday evening when she attempted to light a lantern after buying kerosene from a filling station, opposite her home at Ikot Nkebre.

One of her neighbours, simply identified as Pamela, said an explosion was heard from Eke’s house around 8pm. Neighbours rushed to the scene and found Eke in a pool of blood.

Pamela said: “It was unfortunate because Eke just matriculated at CRUTEC on April 9, which was on a Monday. We all went to share the moment of joy with her. Today is just April 25, and she’s now dead, about to be buried.”

Another neighbour, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “The incident was the fifth in Ikot Nkebre community. Four people had earlier died, while a n o t h e r victim is in the hospital. Even the one in the hospital may not survive because of the degree of injuries she sustained. Before, people used to say that we should buy kerosene from filling stations. But now, people are dying from kerosene bought at filling stations.”

Eke was taken to her Biase home for burial yesterday as neighbours, friends and the university community continued to mourn her.

The Church of Satan has reacted to a comment by Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari, following the killings of church worshipers including two catholic priests in Benue state.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been publicly blasted by the verified Twitter handle of America's Church of Satan (@ChurchofSatan) over a statement he made concerning the killing of two Catholic priests and other church members during worship in Benue.

Recall that while speaking in a reaction to the attack by suspected herdsmen at a Catholic church during a mass in Benue where 19 were slaughtered, President Buhari labelled it as "an evil and satanic act as he vowed to hunt down the assailants and ensure that they pay for the sacrilege committed."

“This latest assault on innocent persons is particularly despicable. Violating a place of worship, killing priests and worshippers is not only vile, evil and satanic, it is clearly calculated to stoke up religious conflict and plunge our communities into endless bloodletting,” the President said.

Buhari's statement didn’t go well the Church of Satan founded by Anton Szandor Lavey, who took to its Twitter page and responded to the statement by stating that the president is ignorant to have blamed the attack on Satan.

”President Buhari is ignorant. Infighting between two different Abrahamic religions is just that, theists killing theists. It has nothing to do with us or Satanism – a life cherishing atheistic religion. Shame on the media for furthering this superstitious nonsense”, a Tweet stated.

A Nigerian pastor has been dragged out in Imo State after he allegedly got involved in the kidnap of a young boy.
The suspects

According to Punch Metro, the operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command have arrested the pastor in charge of Live By Faith Church, Ogbagu, in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, for his alleged involvement in the kidnap of a one-year-old child, Damian Oluwa.

Also arrested was a 23-year-old man, Miracle Emenekwuru, of Ifakala, in the Mbaitoli LGA.

Briefing journalists on Thursday while handing over the rescued child to his mother, Vivian Ebere, the command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Ify Ezeudeogu, said the boy was kidnapped by a four-man gang on Saturday.

According to Ezeudeogu, the hoodlums had invaded Ebere’s apartment at Egbu, Owerri, around 2am, and kidnapped the child after robbing his mother.

She disclosed that the suspects collected Automated Teller Machine cards of the woman during the operation.

The police deputy spokesperson said although N627,000 was paid as ransom for the boy, the suspects refused to release him to the family.

She said “On Saturday, around 2am, a gang of armed robbers and kidnap suspects invaded the apartment of one Vivian Ebere.

“The hoodlums robbed the victim and collected her ATM cards and eventually kidnapped her 17 months old baby, Damian Oluwa.

“The hoodlums later called the boy’s mother for ransom. The sum of N627,000 was collected from the family.”

According to Ezeudeogu, the police swung into action after a complaint was made by the family at the FSARS.

“The FSARS operatives, acting on intelligence and constructive digital analysis, swooped on the assailants on Maduwuba Avenue, Orji, Owerri, arrested the two suspects and rescued the kidnapped child,” she added.

The boy’s mother, Ebere, said after the family paid the initial ransom, the suspects demanded an extra N200,000.

She said the five days her son stayed with the suspects were filled with nightmares for her household.

“We have taken him to a hospital. A series of tests were run on him. He is okay now,” she added.

The pastor told journalists that the victim was kept in his house, adding that he was not aware that he was kidnapped.

He said when he queried the principal suspect, one Kechi Ogobuiro, who was at large, on how he came about the boy, he (Ogobuiro) lied to him.

“He said he impregnated a woman who lived with her parents in Umuahia. He said his girlfriend handed over the boy to him,” he added.

On the relationship between him and the principal suspect, the embattled pastor said Ogobuiro was the son of his child’s godmother.

“He is a student at the Zenith University, Ghana,” he added.

ThisDay columnist and TV presenter, Reuben Abati has taken a close look at the 2019 political race which will feature a lot of young people.

Reuben Abati

A strong indication of both the quality and failure of politics in Nigeria, as the people look forward to the next general elections in 2019, is the manner in which virtually “every” Nigerian believes that he or she is good enough to be President of Nigeria.

This may speak to a deepening of political consciousness, but it is also a reflection of the people’s anxiety and frustration about how the office and position of the President of Nigeria seem to have been mishandled and demystified.

The process of that demystification has taken different shapes and tones since the return to civilian rule in 1999, but now everything seems to have gone so bad, far beyond expectation. My mechanic couldn’t have phrased this national dilemma better. He came to see me the other day, full of excitement.

“Oga, it’s you I have come to sete oh.” Typical Nigerian manner of speaking: you are right in front of me, and yet you still consider it necessary to announce your presence. Anyhow, I nodded affirmatively, already working out a response to a likely solicitation for money. It is school resumption time, and it is usual for people to go soliciting for help to pay children’s school fees in a country where basic education is so unaffordable.

“Oga, I have come to inform you that I am thinking of running for President.” I thought the guy was talking about the Presidency of the Mechanics Village Association. So, I brightened up. No, he meant President of Nigeria. I removed my eyeglasses and dropped my pen.

“President of Nigeria? How? Look, have you been drinking?”

“Oga, you know I am a Christian. I don’t drink. I am serious oh. I have been thinking about it for a while. I can do a better job. The way these people are running Nigeria, some of us have good ideas about what can be done. If we leave this Nigeria to these politicians, they will finish all of us. Anybody that likes this country should get involved.”

I paid attention to him.

“Oga, look at me, I can do it. We can do it. I have worked it out. By the grace of God, I will be the next President of Nigeria.”

I had known this mechanic for a while, but I never suspected he had very tall ambitions. I had not yet given him my honest opinion; he had already conscripted me. “We can do it”. We? Every Nigerian politician is an optimist, and the most optimistic are often the ones who don’t even stand a chance at the polls.

I pretended to be interested all the same; so he continued with his campaign.

“Oga, you know me. Am I a lazy man? No. I am not.” When people insist on answering their own questions the best you can do in the circumstance is to listen.

“What this country needs now is a mechanic, somebody who can take a look at a vehicle that is having problems, and fix it. We, mechanics, do that every day. When they bring a car to you, first you diagnose. What is wrong with the car? Why is it not functioning well, and then you go straight to the problem and fix it. Why can’t people fix Nigeria? If we mechanics were to behave like politicians, this whole country will be littered with broken down vehicles. In the hands of these politicians, Nigeria is broken. E be like say Nigeria don knock engine sef. I am the man who will fix that engine.”

“But nobody will give you any chance. Everybody will laugh and think you are joking.”

“I am not joking, Oga. What does it take to be President? I have done my homework. The only thing they are asking for is a WAEC certificate. I have my certificate ready and I can produce it to prove that I completed secondary school.”

“How many credits?”, I asked, trying to humor him.

“INEC does not ask for five credits. Even F9 parallel sef can be President of Nigeria. No be Nigeria?”

“But you don’t have the resources. You’d need a lot of money.”

“Oga, it is not about money. And if it is money, God will provide. Our Pastor in our church has been praying for me and God is speaking to us. When I become President, I will declare free education, free health and there will no lazy youth in Nigeria again!”

“Why don’t you start at a lower level. may be local government chairman, gain some experience.”

“Ha. Oga, Experience has shown that in Nigerian politics you don’t need experience. Who has experience helped? All those former Governors in the National Assembly, what kind of experience do they have? In fact, let me just say a lot of them go there to sleep and collect free money, travel free. I have seen their pictures. They go there to sleep. When some thugs stormed the place to steal the Mace, not one of them could stand up and protect the Mace. Lazy Senators. Only a woman, a sergeant at arms was courageous enough to challenge the Mace thieves. When I am President, nobody will dare steal the Mace. It won’t happen.”

I felt like telling him that there has been too much drama about the significance of the Mace in our legislatures. It is at best a ceremonial symbol. For a session of the legislature to be valid under the 1999 Constitution what is required is a quorum as defined under Section 54, but of course the kind of criminal conduct that was put up at the Senate, last week, is condemnable and should be investigated and all authors of that act of impunity must be sanctioned accordingly. I didn’t say anything to him along these lines, rather I was more impressed by his passion, his determination to save Nigeria and arrest the drift. I was also struck by the fact that he is not the only Nigerian with such passion. There have been many of his kind, now active on social media, promoting a vision of Nigeria and insisting that they would be better materials for 2019.

The number of these aspiring Presidents keeps increasing every day and while I consider some of their posters a bit curious and the candidates a bit unusual, taken together, the shared anxiety about the Presidency and who is best fit to lead Nigeria beyond 2019 says a lot about public expectations. There are online, videotapes of a certain Aunty Monica, for example. She is based in Europe and she wants to come home to be President, to bring investment and tourism to the country, and she says she has “ideas in her head.” I have also seen such banners as “Vote Iya Bayo for president, Aunti Ramota for Vice President”, and “PFANN: A new refreshing wind blowing over the nation. Get ready. Elishama 2019.”

The names of a popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, and that of the legendary footballer, Kanu Nwankwo have also been mentioned as potential Presidents of Nigeria. Neither Pasuma nor Kanu has confirmed their interest in the job. But the social media is the forum where many ideas are hatched, and many of such ideas also die on social media, but what is said about public reality should not be ignored. Nigerians want what is now referred to as the #realchange. They are disappointed. They are angry. There is also a growing resentment to the repeated claim by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Buhari’s handlers that there is no alternative to Buhari. In a most recent article, Garba Shehu, a Presidential spokesperson asks what he considers “an important question” - “who do you have that is better?. Then he answers it himself; “…certainly there is no face (other than Buhari) that can be called the President of Nigeria.” Garba Shehu even scoffs at the Coalition Movement that started a protest against the two leading political parties in Nigeria - APC, and PDP and asked for a one-term Buhari Presidency. He says “a so-called Third Force has failed to gain political traction since its birth.”

My mechanic, Aunty Monica, Iya Bayo, Aunti Ramota, and Elishama – these are ordinary Nigerians- certainly disagree that only one man’s face is good for the Nigerian Presidency. They, in fact, believe that they will do a much better job. But perhaps the more significant development is the emergence of new faces on the political scene who is also keenly interested in rescuing Nigeria and whose declared starting point is the Presidency. I once described them as products of the Trudeau-Macron effect. Justin Trudeau, 46, became Prime Minister of Canada in 2015. Emmanuel Macron, 39 assumed office as President of France in 2017.

There is also the current Chancellor of Austria, Sebastian Kurz - he is the youngest President in the world. He is 31. An emerging group of Nigerian political leaders falls into this category: they are challenging current political orthodoxies; they are educated, they are internationally exposed, they can think out of the box and above all, they are united in their resolve that President Muhammadu Buhari is replaceable in 2019. They equally pose a challenge to the traditional political elite, which so far is yet to make up its mind about presidential candidates or alternative platforms for the 2019 Presidential and general elections. The usual tendency is to dismiss them as “noisemakers and attention seekers”, but they probably constitute the real “Third Force” that will produce the traction that the Presidency is yet to see.

One newspaper has identified up to about 24 of these emerging “game changers”. There is Bukunyi Olateru-Olagbegi, 27 who has registered a political party – the Modern Democratic Party (MDP). He is not running for President but the MDP could become a useful platform for youth mobilization and conscientization.

There is also Omoyele Sowore, 47, former students’ union leader, civil rights activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, an online newspaper. For the past month or so, Sowore has been on the campaign trail, addressing students and civil society groups. He has also appeared on radio and television. His main message is that Nigerian youth should “take back Nigeria” from those who have destroyed it. He has in particular been very critical of the Buhari government. “I can run Nigeria better than Buhari in my sleep”, he says. When a serving Minister, Adebayo Shittu told Sowore to go and start as a councilor, during a radio programme, Sowore held his ground. Kingsley Moghalu, 55, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), an author and a scholar, has also declared his interest in the Nigerian Presidency. He is offering Nigeria, “bold and decisive leadership …something different … by a capable, experienced technocrat.” Like Sowore, Moghalu means business.

You also have Fela Durotoye, 47, a Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN). Durotoye wants to rebuild Nigeria through visionary and inspirational leadership. Alistair Soyode is the founder of BEN TV in the United Kingdom. For years, he has been reporting Nigerian stories to the world and to Africans in the diaspora. Like Sowore, he has also decided to become directly involved in Nigerian politics. Other emerging aspirants include Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, 55 who says “power must go to women and the youth”; Sam Nwanti, an international detective, and a member of the Labour party, who wants to “fight crime and corruption”. Others include US-based Omololu Omotosho, Lewis Omike, a filmmaker and photographer, Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, 47, of the National Conscience Party, and 35-year old Adamu Garba II.

The temptation is to dismiss this category of aspirants as Minister Shittu has done, in part because they do not preach the message of religion, ethnicity, and money, and they do not seem to have any Godfathers who can offer them existing structures in exchange for conditions of service.

Many of them may even throw in the towel before the actual race begins. The old brigade of Nigerian politics is not in a hurry to retire, change tactics or yield space. People don’t become Presidents in Nigeria by merely pasting posters and social media messages or through sheer idealism. IN 2011, Dele Momodu, 51 at the time, tried to run for President. He has many stories to tell.

The Trudeau-Macron effect in our politics may still take a few more years. But it would be wrong to ignore what the new faces represent: a more deep-seated yearning for change among the youth and the middle class, and at least two of them: Sowore and Durotoye are already exercising much influence among the Nigerian youth, not just on social media but also across the educational institutions and the streets.

Gov. Fayose

Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari, over the killing of two Reverend Fathers and 17 others in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen.

Writing on his Twitter page, the governor wondered why Buhari was silent over the ”seeming ethnic cleansing in Benue and other middle-belt States.”

He wrote ”A government that is not concerned about the killing of 18 Catholic worhipers, including two priests but running after perceived political opponents will surely come to an inglorious end one day.

”It is alarming and curious that Father Joseph Gor, one of the Catholic Priests that were murdered in Benue State yesterday, raised alarm on January 3, 2018, through his Facebook account on the occupation of Mbalom community by herdsmen. Yet, the priest was killed!

”Why is the FG allowing this seeming ethnic cleansing in Benue and other middle-belt States, such that President Buhari and the entire members of his government do not see the wanton killings as anything to be worried about?

”When did Nigeria degenerate to the level that people can no longer worship peacefully in their churches or go to their farms? When did Nigeria become a state of anomie where people are killed even after raising alarm that there was threat to their existence?

”In all these, Nigerians should remember that I warned that a tyrant will forever be a tyrant.”

A man and his wife have been found dead and even decomposing right inside their apartment in Lagos.

According to a report by Punch Metro, there was confusion on Sadius Crescent, Araromi-Ile, in the Morogbo area of Lagos State, after the decomposing bodies of a couple were found in their apartment.

The remains, which were found on Saturday, were removed by policemen from the Morogbo Police Division.

This is just as an electrician, Abiodun Odutu, got electrocuted while reconnecting electricity to his house on Yusuf Asika Street, Ijegun, Isheri-Oshun.

Punch Metro reports that the identities of the deceased couple had yet-to-be established as their co-tenants were said to have fled the neighbourhood upon the discovery.

A source said the landlord of the residence was allegedly mentally challenged while no relation of the couple had yet to come forward.

The source said the late husband and wife should be in their 60s and 50s respectively, adding that their corpses had been deposited in the Badagry General Hospital morgue.

He said, “The couple lived in a rented apartment. Their landlord is not mentally sound and he is on admission at a psychiatric hospital. Their co-tenants fled home on hearing the news for fear that they may be arrested.

“The couple were childless and from the look of things, they died a few days before their bodies were discovered as their remains had started decomposing. No relation has come for them.”

It was gathered that the electrician, 50-year-old Odutu, had climbed an electric pole to reconnect electricity to his house around 3pm last Tuesday when he was electrocuted.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incidents, said detectives visited and photographed the scenes.

He said investigations had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death, adding that no mark of violence was found on the couple.

He said, “At about 2.30pm, a report was received that decomposing corpses of a husband and wife, name still unknown, were allegedly found in their room on Sadius Crescent, Morogbo, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

“The corpses were thereafter removed and deposited in the Badagry General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Investigation is in progress.

“In the Ijegun incident, the man allegedly got electrocuted on an electric pole while reconnecting electricity to his house on Yusuf Asika Street, Isheri-Oshun.

“The scene was visited and photographed by detectives. The corpse had been deposited in the Mainland General Hospital morgue for autopsy.”

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has spoken after his side beat AS Roma 5-2 in the Champions League semifinal first leg at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp

Although they conceded two late goals, Liverpool's manager, Jurgen Klopp was delighted with his team's performance in the 5-2 win, and acknowledged that Liverpool rarely do it the easy way after a late rally at Anfield kept Roma alive in their Champions League semi-final.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored twice, while Sadio Mane was also on target, as Liverpool raced into a 5-0 lead after 68 minutes of the first leg.

Yet Roma who rallied from a 4-1 first-leg defeat to knock Barcelona out on away goals in the previous round of the competition, gave themselves a lifeline with two goals of their own before the final whistle.

Eden Dzeko scored before Diego Perotti made it 5-2 from the spot after James Milner was penalised for handball, though Klopp felt the decision was harsh.

Still, with a healthy lead to take into the return fixture at the Stadio Olimpico, Liverpool's manager praised his players for a "fantastic result" on home soil.

"It was pretty much a perfect performance for 80 minutes or so," Klopp told BT Sport.

"We made one mistake defensively where Dzeko could use the situation. That can happen, we knew before the game they have quality and we could not avoid that all through the game.

"I think we agree the penalty is not a penalty. It's not even handball, let alone a yellow card. But that's the situation and it's 5-2. I'd be much happier, of course, if we had won 5-0 or 5-1, but 5-2 is a fantastic result.

"I could not have imagined that was possible [before kick-off], so the boys did outstandingly well and we will go there and try to win again."

Liverpool started the game in subdued fashion before ripping Roma apart either side of the half-time interval.

Salah was the catalyst for the chaos, tormenting his former club with a brace before the break. The Egyptian forward turned provider in the second half, supplying two assists before being substituted.

While conceding twice in the closing stages took the shine off the performance, Klopp insisted he would focus only on the positives once the dust had settled.

"You always have to learn from the game. I really thought how we played them, with all these runs in behind, was brilliant," he said.

"It changed the game completely – they could not cope with that. We scored these goals, but we could have scored more. It sounds crazy in a semi-final, but we could have scored more. We missed a lot of chances.

"That's all positive. At the moment it doesn't feel that positive because they scored two goals. But, believe me, I will see the good parts of the game.

"We are Liverpool – that obviously means it's all-inclusive football. Everything is involved. We obviously have to do it the hard way, but we've no problem with that."

A new investigation has shown how young Nigerian students cheat during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination through websites.
WASSCE objective paper; answers sent by the websites Photos: Samson Folarin

While some youths sweat and rack their brains for answers to questions at the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, others have perfected the art of getting cheap grades through some websites which obtain questions before the start of exams.

An investigation by PUNCH Metro revealed this on Tuesday.

Our correspondent had pretended to be a candidate sitting for the WASSCE being administered by the West African Examination Council.

He subscribed for answers to Commerce (Objective and Theory) from five of the result-peddling websites – naijaclass.com, examcrown.com, examsort.com, waecexpo.com and guruslodge.com.

While naijaclass, examcrown, examsort and waecexpo demanded N400 MTN recharge cards to send a link to the answers of the exam and N800 for direct answers to phones, guruslodge demanded N800 to send the answers directly to candidates’ phones.

Candidates were, however, urged on the websites to make subscriptions for all the papers and pay into certain account numbers provided on their websites in order to get discounts.

Provisions were made for “Very Important Persons.”

There were alleged testimonies of some candidates who had passed their exams after using the services of the websites.

They also displayed excellent WASSCE results of some candidates, whose names were deliberately blurred to conceal their identities.

After PUNCH Metro sent recharge cards to designated phone numbers on Monday, the operators of the websites, after some hours, sent confirmation texts.

Before Tuesday, the date of the exam, the operators had started sending links to the answer websites through text messages.

They said the answers would be uploaded on the sites.

By past 1pm on Tuesday, some of the websites said they had got the questions and were solving them.

They supplied our correspondent with Personal Identification Numbers with which to access the sites.

By 2.07pm, answers to the theory questions started streaming in, and in less than 45 minutes, the theory and objective answers had been supplied.

While guruslodge sent all its answers through text messages, others sent links based on the subscription of our correspondent.

Our correspondent, while trying to verify the answers to the theory questions at the end of the exam at 5pm, learnt that WASSCE candidates submitted the question papers with their answer sheets.

PUNCH Metro, however, contacted two candidates who wrote the exam to ascertain the questions asked by the examiners.

Candidate A, who wrote the exam in a public school in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, recalled answering questions bordering on division of labour, contract, reasons for consumer protection, second tier security market, calculation of working capital, among others.

Candidate B, another public school pupil, who wrote his exam in the Somolu area of Lagos, gave a similar highlight.

He said, “We had eight questions and we were asked to answer five. Some of the questions are: State three disadvantages and five advantages of division of labour? State the differences between public enterprises and public company? What is contract? Calculate the account of…”

A look at the answers provided by the websites showed they had the questions correctly.

For instance, examsort answered the questions on second tier market, which it claimed was the 6th question on the paper. It also defined contract.

Examcrown highlighted the reasons for consumer protection, which it said was question number 7.

The others also addressed the questions stated by the pupils.

However, a look at the objective questions showed that the website operators had conflicting answers.

A teacher, who did not want to be identified, said he was shocked to discover such services were freely advertised on the Internet.

He expressed disgust while recounting how he came by the websites.

He said, “I was telling my younger brother of how I heard of a certain science teacher in my locality who went online to get answers to Physics practical experiments last year, instead of conducting the experiments with his pupils; and they all failed when the results came out.

“My brother remarked, ‘He didn’t get his answers from the right site.’ He further enlightened me on several sites on the Internet where by sending recharge cards of N400, pupils can have access to questions and answers of the exams they were writing in real-time.

“These sites always have all the exam papers, probably a day or two before the exams. And they have the solutions too. There are many of them advertising and competing for patronage like legitimate business. On these sites are the testimonies of Nigerian students. I saw the testimony of a student on examcrown.com who got 7 A1s and a B3 after using their service.

“I went to one of such sites and in front of me were solutions to the Physics exam that pupils were sweating in the hall on. The solutions online were posted on the 19th of April, a day before the exam.

“Students typically have access to the solutions a few minutes to the commencement of the exams, of course to make maximum sales, as PINs could be shared if the answers were released earlier. Several of these pupils still need the cooperation of invigilators and their schools to use their phones in the exam halls to access the answers, while others take advantage of large examination centres to do their thing surreptitiously. It breaks my heart as a teacher.”

He noted that answers to the National Examination Council’s questions were usually online two days before the exam, as some of the websites gave pupils NECO answers free.

He lamented that the situation had affected the standard of education in the country.

“So, we have pupils getting eight distinctions now and 300 in UTME, yet having no substance in their heads. These ones will gain admissions into university and block the chances of good students who legitimately got their five credits and 220 in UTME. My John James could not gain admission with a score of over 260 in UTME last year. Godstime is a great student, but he will be lucky to gain admission with the 280 he scored this year.

“Why are we so messed up as a country? Who are these Nigerians who are destroying this system for pecuniary gains? Aren’t they the same Nigerians who complain daily of the state of this country? Aren’t they the youth who should be the future of this country? The same young people who cry daily of how our father’s generation failed us?

“The rot in education is particularly sad because it has ripple effects, spreading across all sectors. Imagine students using these sites to get eight distinctions and 330 so they can go study medicine and surgery to become doctors. Imagine them wanting to become engineers, scientists, lawyers, etc. They will most likely have to oil their way through school and come out deficient in whatever fields they find themselves in…even with great results. Are our exam bodies aware of these sites?” he added.

The spokesperson for WAEC, Demianus Ojijeogu, said the exam body was aware of the website operators, adding that their activities  were a sad comment on education in Nigeria.

He said, “It did not start today. We have been following up on it for a while now. Our investigations have, however, shown that sometimes they recycle old questions or supply fake questions. And even if they are correct, it is after the examinations have commenced. We have asked the supervisors to be our eyes.

“The supervisors are not our workers; they are supplied by the ministry of education. We have asked them to help us and prevent the students from entering exam halls with mobile phones. We have also upgraded our security facilities and we are deploying technologies as well.

“This situation is not peculiar to just WASSCE, other examinations are affected as well and it is sad for education in Nigeria. It is sad because it means if I can just sit down and someone will supply the answers to me, why then do I need to read?

“Our manpower has been overstretched. We have some of our workers working on day and night shifts. We are working round-the-clock and we urge the cooperation of other stakeholders to stop this ugly trend.”

The police isn't taking any chances in handling Dino Melaye as he was chained even when he appeared weak on a stretcher in a bid to get him medical treatment.

Dino Melaye on stretcher on handcuffs

According to reports filtering in from Abuja, fierce looking armed policemen led by Jimoh Moshood, spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, stormed Zankili Medical Center, Mabushi, Abuja, where Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi West, is being treated.

The senator was admitted into the hospital after he attempted to escape from police custody.

Security operatives outside the hospital

There was tension in the hospital as the policemen arrested two persons — a man and a woman — said to be members of his staff, for unknown offence.

The policemen summoned the official of the hospital and demanded to know where Melaye was. The hospital room where he is receiving treatment has been taken over by the police.

A picture of the All Progressives Congress chieftain on handcuffs as he laid motionless on a stretcher has raised eyebrows.

A Nigerian man who had the nerve to pose as an American millionaire to dupe women, has been nabbed in Thailand.
The man was nabbed by police in Thailand

According to a report by Nation Thailand, the Thai Tourist Police launched a manhunt for conspirators in a “romance scam” gang after they arrested a 32-year-old Nigerian who allegedly lured a Thai woman in Lampang province into wiring him nearly Bt100,000.

Tourist Police Bureau deputy commissioner Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakparn said in a press conference yesterday that the suspect, Emery Henry Ogba, was a member of a gang believed to have a monthly income of Bt1 million from illicit operations.

Ogba was nabbed at a department store in Nonthaburi province on April 21, following an arrest warrant issued by a Lampang Court on March 29 on charges of fraud and overstaying his visa.

Police seized Bt42,700 in cash, some ATM cards and bank books, and four mobile phones.

Surachet said that one of the conspirators was a Thai woman.

“On February 21, a 41-year-old woman filed complaints with police in Lampang’s Koh Ka area that a man who identified himself as Mark Westwood, an American millionaire, befriended with her via Facebook conversations,” he said.

The suspect used the Facebook photo of another man. After about two months, he said he wanted to send her ? a large sum of money and some other items, but he asked her to send him some money to pay tax. A Thai woman then called the woman and convinced her that she was a government official and that she should do what “Westwood” requested.

The victim wired him money twice, totalling about Bt97,000. The next time the so-called government office rang her trying to convince her to wire more money, the sound of a baby crying was heard during the telephone conversation.

“That made the woman realise that she was being cheated, as a government office should not have a crying baby. Therefore, she alerted police,” Surachet said.

Deeper investigations showed that the Nigerian was a member of a “romance scam” operating on Facebook. He variously identified himself as Thomas Anderson, Mike Dave, Bob Frank, Ivan Stogan, Luca Perozi or Chris Benson.

Claiming to be a millionaire, he befriended Thai women online and then cheated them out of their money.

Surachet said that victims of the Nigerian suspect included the woman in Lampang and three others in Nonthaburi.

They said the suspect sneaked into Thailand via Malaysia and had lived here illegally for more than eight years. He had in his possession three fake passports – two from Northern Ireland and one American.

Surachet said that the Thai woman who worked alongside the suspect opened bank accounts and helped generate about Bt1 million in monthly income for the gang.

A Nigerian lawmaker has suffered an unbelievably tragic fate as he loses as many as ten family members in an auto crash.
 Photo from the burial

It has been reported that three biological children and seven family members of Saidu Yarkufoji, a member of Zamfara State House of Assembly, representing Bakura state constituency, have died in an auto crash.

The Zamfara command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the tragic incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.

Nasiru Ahmed, spokesman of the command, said the crash was caused by a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Golf car and a Coca-Cola truck.

The accident occurred along Sokoto-Gusau road on Sunday.

According to NAN, other family members of the lawmaker who died in the accident were four of his grandchildren, his two sisters and his driver.

“Out of the 10 persons, who died in the car conveying 12 passengers, nine are female.

“The other two persons who sustained various degrees of injuries are still receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Special Hospital, Gusau.

“Motorists are advised to avoid night journey and over speeding as much as possible to reduce crashes across the state,” he said.

Tony Momoh, a strong loyalist of President Buhari believes he is right about insinuating that Nigerian youths are lazy.

Prince Tony Momoh

A former Minister of Informarion, Prince Tony Momoh, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s owes no one any apology over his reported ‘lazy Nigerian youths’ comment.

Momoh said the President was right for saying a lot of Nigerian youths are sitting at home doing nothing. Momoh, a leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, said this when he spoke with the Independent on Monday.

President Buhari, while delivering a keynote address at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London yesterday, was quoted to have said that most Nigerian youths want everything free without doing anything.

Momoh said Buhari was never afraid of speaking the truth unlike other professional politicians who only said things they want the people to hear.

He said, “That the President should apologise. Apologise for what? Are many Nigerian youths not staying at home doing nothing? Why should he apologise for saying the truth? Is it not true that many of our youths are sitting at home doing anything because of lack of opportunities?”

“If he is going to apologise, it will be because the government is trying to create opportunities for youths. To apologise for saying a lot of Nigerian youths are staying at home is unnecessary.

“The population of Nigerian youths that are jobless, is it high or low? If it is high, then one can rightly say that most of them don’t work. The fact is President Buhari is a very highly focused man. He says what is on his mind and is never afraid of doing so.

“If you want to analyse the issue, you will discover that he is just speaking his mind unlike the professional politicians who are used to lying. Having discovered that many Nigerian youths stay at home and have no work to do, it is his responsibility to create avenue for them to work.

“If Shell is going to invest $15b or more in Nigeria, is it not a way of creating avenues for the youths who stay at home doing nothing? A lot of Nigerians are focusing on unimportant things, playing politics with important issues by distorting what the president said.

“If I were to look at the issue, I will focus on the fact that Shell is going to invest $15b in Nigeria and create avenues for unemployed youths to work. He never used the word lazy in describing Nigerian youths, it is mischief makers who twisted his words
