A mother has been left in shock after giving birth to a baby with genetic disorder called, Progeria.

The mother and her baby with progeria
The mother and her baby with progeria

A 20-year-old woman has been left disturbed after giving birth to a baby that looks like an old woman.

The South African woman gave birth to the baby with a rare condition called progeria, a progressive genetic disorder that causes children to age rapidly.

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is caused by a mutation (change) in the lamin (LMNA) gene.

The woman from Libode in Eastern Cape, delivered the baby girl at home two months ago. Local mid-wives including the baby's grandmother noticed that she exhibited signs that were different from most babies. Her hands are deformed and her skin was wrinkled. She is currently in hospital with her mother.

"When she was in labour we called an ambulance but it took long to come. So she gave birth here at home. But the delivery got complicated and we hired a van to take her to hospital," the grandmother said.

"We were told there that she’s disabled. I noticed during her birth that there was something strange with her. She did not cry and she was breathing through the ribs. I was shocked because that was strange. Now I hear that people are calling her names. That hurts a lot. If I had means, I would put all of them in jail,” she added.

Photos of the baby have been circulating on social media. Some users likened her to an ape, causing outrage and anger among those who sympathize with her.

Director of children’s rights organisation, Khula Community Development Project, Petros Majola, believes communities need to be educated about this condition.

"Communities must know that the mother did not apply for her baby to be like this. In a woman’s womb, there is no construction or factory that builds babies. People need to embrace this child for who she is,” says Majola.

Medical experts say the genetic condition occurs randomly and is not inherited. Doctor Martha Mayer, a neonatologist at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital says the syndrome is very rare.

"Progeria is a genetic condition that makes the baby age faster. Another thing is that these children also develop heart diseases and their life span is very short. We have never had a child with that condition in this hospital. It is very rare, maybe it happens to one in four or eight million people.”

Progeria affects about 1 in 20 million people around the world and there is no known cure.

Ontlametse Phalatse, who captured the hearts of many South Africans for her brave battle with progeria, died at the age of 18 in 2017.

Vundlani Mwandzule

Vundlani Mwandzule, a 25-year-old South African man, has alleged that his sugar mummy has been making life miserable after he called off their relationship.

According to Mwandzule, one time, he refused to have sex with her because he was tired, she threatened to cut his manhood with a razor blade.

Vundlani said he met the 42-year-old woman in 2020 just before South Africa went into lockdown.

"We met at a drinking place in River Park, on the outskirts of Alexandra township. We exchanged numbers and our relationship developed like wildfire during level five lockdown, and soon I started visiting her at her house in Lombardy near Edenvale,"
he told scrollaAfrica

He said every time he visited her, she made sure that she bought him a lot of booze and he got drunk.

"After the booze, it’s all about sex. All night long,” said Vundlani.

Vundlani recalled a situation where he refused to have sex with the said woman because he was tired, and she threatened to cut his manhood with a razorblade.

"I had to give her sex and a lot of it,
" he said.

Vundlani said his sugar mama had been taking him to expensive places and restaurants.

"Even if we have alcohol in the house, she would still take me out,” he said.

But now he says he's no longer interested in the relationship.

"I am tired. I don’t want her anymore,” he said, but she still wants him.

He said the lady now allegedly shows up unannounced at his place, saying she has spent a lot of money on him and threatening to hurt him.

Vundlani’s mother, Thandazile Tshikhathali, told Scrolla.Africa that her son’s sugar mama has made her life uncomfortable as well, adding that she has reported her to their community leader.

"She comes to my house and tells me I’m poor and I must accept that my son is in love with her. She tells me that she can buy my other children laptops and anything that they want because she has the money.”

Thandazile said that she and her son are considering getting a protection order against her.

The Scrolla.Africa team traced Cecilia (not her real name) who spoke to the team telephonically.

"Wow. I won’t talk about my personal life in the media. I have no comment,” she said.

Bajeneza Liberata and her baby

A woman has been left stranded after he husband walked out on her and asked her to kill their deformed baby boy whom he referred to as a ''spawn of the devil''.

Bajeneza Liberata, from Rwanda, was abandoned by her husband and her family after she gave birth to the deformed baby.

The dad insisted he had no responsibility for the child and called it the devil’s spawn before walking out on her.

This left the mother stranded as she struggled to care for herself and her child, alongside her other children.

Bajeneza told Afrimax English that she had given birth to several other children and had not experienced any issues.

As she couldn't keep up with life in the city, a good samaritan eventually offered to drive Bajeneza and her baby back to her village.

Since she returned to the village, other villagers have been tormenting her, making fun of the baby and calling it a monster and an "alien".

Bajeneza has been struggling to care for herself and her son who appears to be in a lot of pain. She said she doesn't even know what condition her child is suffering from.

A GoFundMe page has since been set up which is raising money to send Bajeneza and her child abroad for treatment.

It reads: "This baby was born like this, people call him an alien because of the way he looks, his mother was abandoned by his father when his eyes landed on the baby at first sight.

"She struggles with him each and every day, she moved to the village and left her other children on their own in the city, to come to this village and seek help which she failed to find.

"She is now asking for help to take the baby abroad because in this country it’s not possible. Please donate to save his life."

Lifeless Body Of Baby Boy Dumped Inside Dustbin In Bayelsa

The corpse of a newborn baby boy was discovered at a public dustbin in Okaka community, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital on Saturday morning.

It gathered that the abandoned corpse of the baby was discovered by residents of the area who came out early to dump refuse collected from their homes during the monthly sanitation in the state.

At the time of visit, women were seen laying curses on the unknown mother of the deceased boy.

According to a mother, madam Jane Lagos, “It will not be well with this woman who abandoned this innocent child here to suffer and die under the cold of the night,” I was at home this morning when I heard people talking about the ugly incident, so I immediately ran down to witness it, behold I saw the baby.

“As a mother, it is devastating for a woman to carry a baby in her womb and after 9 months of the pains of labour, abandoned the child this way to die. We are talking about the life of a human being here ; this is painful for a woman to do this.”

The President of Yenagoa Federated Youth council, Mr. Ineife Perekosifa, attributed the cause of incident to poor parenting and lack of care by guardians.

He said, “Our campaign as a body has always been strong against teenage pregnancy, which could be one of the possible causes of this incident.

“Our campaign will not stop until we reduce the high rate of teenage pregnancy and other effects of it.

I’m concerned because this is a potential that has been wasted this morning, and we pray that the government of the day will put in place the needed apparatus to curb this menace that has affected the state as a whole."

This is the third in just a few weeks It started in Okutukutu community, then later in Opolo and now it’s here in Okaka; a wrong precedent that is now becoming a norm, and it’s something we won’t take likely. We will consult with stakeholders and communicate to the masses our next action.

As at 9 am, the police and officers of Ekeki division were seen around the area maintaining peace, but the corpse was still at the site despite several efforts by concerned residents.

Men of the state sanitation authorities and other health workers visited the site severally and left without evacuating the corpse.

Lorna Goodings and her baby

A woman was left in shock after she discovered she was 38 weeks pregnant just four hours before she gave birth to a baby girl.

Lorna Goodings, 25, had thought her baby bump was just bloating and doctors put her swollen tummy down to the effects of her birth control.

She even did a pregnancy test in July 2021, when she's believed to have been 38 weeks pregnant, and the result came back negative. She did another test on the day she gave birth and it was still negative.

As a result, Lorna was shocked to find out she was pregnant and already in labour just four hours before she gave birth to her daughter, Daphne Burdiak, at Northampton General Hospital, Northampton, on August 1.

She was at a friend's party when she felt pain so was rushed to the hospital only to discover she was in labour.

She says: "When I went into labour, I was at a party with my friends, and I was in pain all day.

"It got so bad that my friends took me to the hospital, and medics told me I was 38 weeks pregnant and in labour.

"I couldn’t believe it."

Lorna said it was a surprise for her and her partner, Nick Burdiak, 42, a machine operator, who couldn’t make it for the birth as he was on a night out with his friends.

Lorna continued: "I didn’t even tell Nick – as I knew he would have had too many pints and wouldn’t understand.

"It’s been a massive shock, but baby Daphne is just amazing."

Lorna, who had her first child Vivienne, in June 2020, now has two kids both under 13 months.

Explaining why she didn't know she was pregnant, Lorna said: "I had the contraceptive implant in October but started feeling really rubbish pretty soon after.

A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after she purposely coughed and spat on food in a supermarket while screaming she had COVID-19.

Margaret Ann Cirko, 37, apologized in court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a felony charge of making bomb threats over the March 2020 incident in a Gerrity’s Supermarket near Wilkes-Barre.

Cirko was arrested after police say she went into the supermarket and started coughing all over the fresh produce, as well as the bakery and meat sections.

At the time, Cirko was screaming: “I have the virus, now you are all going to get sick.”

Margaret

Joe Fasula, the co-owner of the supermarket chain, claimed they had to throw out $35,000 worth of food and products as a result of Cirko’s actions.

Fasula later described it as a “twisted prank” but said customers and employees at the time were terrified they were going to get sick.

Given it took place at the beginning of the pandemic, Fasula said no one knew if the virus could spread on surfaces.

There are mixed reactions online as several Celestial church members disclosed that they ''passed'' exams they didn't write because they were in a trance in church.

They began sharing their stories after a Twitter user revealed that a friend of hers went into a trance in church yesterday, August 22, and she will likely stay that way for 7 days, meaning she will miss her exams which starts today.

Usually, white garment church members who go into a ''trance'' stay that way for days.

Other white garment church members, including Celestial Church members and Cherubim & Seraphim members, responded, saying the friend has nothing to worry about because the God who she is serving will 'take care of her exams.'

They then narrated how they missed their exams because they were in a trance, yet they passed.

One said he missed two exams while in a trance yet he had a better score than those who sat for it. He said she scored A in the courses.

Another said he had a 3.87 CGPA with no carryover, despite missing his exams because he was in a trance for 21 days.

What do you do for a living?

Banele Shelembe

Banele Shelembe

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a 4-year-old girl, Banele Shelembe, has been attacked and killed by two pit bulls in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Shelembe from the Mvundlweni area at KwaMnyandu, Elandskop was with three older children when the dogs from the area attacked her on Wednesday afternoon, August 18.

They had been sent to the shop to buy salt by her mother. During the attack the three other children managed to run away and call for help.
Speaking to The Witness on Friday, Banele’s mother Jabu Mncibi, narrated how she watched helplessly as her daughter was mauled to death by the dogs.

"I heard the children that Banele went to the store with screaming and shouting that my baby had been attacked by the dogs. One grabbed her by the neck and the other on the leg. I couldn’t do anything and I pleaded for help as I watched my baby being dragged. She died on the spot,” said Mncibi wiping her tears.

She said the other children managed to escape. Mncibi added that she wants the dogs to be put down in front of her, just as they killed her child in front of her.

Jabu described Banele as a bubbly and loving child. She also said it she is having flashbacks of the incident.

Confirming the incident, Plessislaer police spokesperson, Sifiso Gwala, said an inquest case has been opened.

“The pit bulls were taken by SPCA (National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). People who have dogs must make sure that their homes are properly fenced and also that they are kept on a leash." he stated.

The 40-year-old woman was found dead in her room with her police husband, Sergeant Saheed Oyewole, and her last child, Bose, 4, on the same bed.

 Bidemi Olatunji

At about 9:10 am on Tuesday morning, August 17, some concerned persons from the shop of a mother of five, Bidemi Olatunji, came to her house at Ifesowapo Community to know why she was not at her shop as usual.

The 40-year-old woman was found dead in her room with her police husband, Sergeant Saheed Oyewole, and her last child, Bose, 4, on the same bed.

Her other four children, Sadiq, 14; Taiwo and Kehinde, 9; Idowu, 7, were also found dead in another room.

A 14-year-old boy, Awwal Busari, who Olatunji, popularly called Iya Ibeji, took in was found unconscious in the passage. Awwal was rushed to the hospital and is responding to treatment.

Awwal was said to be a cousin of Olatunji’s neighbour, Samuel, who she took in on the request of his uncle.

Two goats were also found dead outside the house, eyewitnesses told DAILY POST.

The family of seven died mysteriously from their sleep while the true nature of the death is still uncertain.

Life of the mother of five

Olatunji is a food vendor in the town of Apomu, Isokan Local Government Area of Osun State. She had five children with her deceased husband before she married Saheed, a sergeant attached to Safer Higher Patrol.

She married the police officer as his third wife, in line with the teachings of Islam, two years ago.

According to residents, Olatunji moved to her new house located at Ifesowapo Community, an unpopular neighbourhood of Oke Suna Community in Apomu within the third week of July 2021, days before the 2021 Eid-el-Fitri celebration.

Her street has only two occupied houses, with the rest being uncompleted buildings.

According to a resident of Oke Suna, who was also part of the sympathisers but did not want to be named, the deceased would have left the house by the time she was found dead in her apartment.

“She normally leaves home around 6 am because of the nature of her job, she is a food vendor. At around 9 am; that is why people have to check why nobody has seen their movement,” she said.

We saw no traces of food poison – Hospital

The management of Jordan Clinic, who first received Awwal, said the boy was brought into their hospital “seriously unconscious” and rendered first aid before he was transferred to OAU teaching hospital, Ile-Ife, after two hours of his admission in their hospital.

Moses Ojeke, who attended to the boy, ruled out food poisoning.

He explained that the family did not wait for the result of the blood sample taken from Awwal before they rushed him to Ile-Ife.

While asked if he can speak on the cause of the incident, Ojeke said, “I cannot say much because the urine and blood sample we took was not out before we referred him to Ile-Ife. But based on my observation, I don’t think it’s food poison.”

Further responding to answers, “based on the information we gathered, the type of generator they were using is not the type that brings carbon. I don’t think it’s generator fumes either, we should wait for the autopsy for the confirmation of their death.”

The community is safe to live in – monarch

The Alapomu of Apomu, Oba Kayode Adenekan Atoyebi II, while speaking with newsmen on Thursday asked the community to be calm saying his chiefs have inspected the scene.

The monarch assured the residents that the area of the incident is safe to live in.

According to him, the government would have sealed the area if a chemical substance that would affect people living in the area was discovered.

We are conducting forensic autopsy – Osun health commissioner

Speaking with DAILY POST on the phone, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, revealed that the state government is conducting a forensic autopsy which is beyond opening of the bodies.

He added that the duration of the process is not known, “we can’t give a timeline because they are doing a forensic autopsy which is beyond the opening of the bodies.

“The team of the has been in the house where the incident happened to see forensic”.

The sad incident happened at the Scales & Tails reptile center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The man saved the zoo keeper after alligator attack
The man saved the zoo keeper after alligator attack

A visitor at a zoo has saved the life of a zoo handler after an alligator clamped down on her arm.

The attack unfolded at the Scales & Tails reptile center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, August 14.

A Utah reptile center employee was doing a presentation for a group that were there to celebrate a birthday party. While talking to some adults and children about the alligator, the employee opened the enclosure to feed the alligator but it clamped down on her arm and yanked her into its enclosure, thrashing her around.

Fortunately, one of the visitors, now identified as Donnie Wiseman, 48, jumped into the water and climbed on top of the reptile in an effort to free the handler from its jaws.

Shane Richins, the company's owner, said in an interview that the handler was opening the enclosure to feed the alligator as usual, but this time the reptile "got a little extra spunky."

Richins said the center normally has a strict policy for a second handler to be nearby when employees are working with the alligators.

However, that hasn't been enforced in recent years if the worker isn't planning to enter the enclosure, he said.

"We still enforce it strictly whenever somebody gets in with the gator but, of course, going forward, we will be back to strictly enforcing it with any interactions with the gator for that very reason," Richins said.

Wiseman, who saved the handler, told Gephardt Daily: "I'm just like, 'What do I do? What do I need to do?' And I got on him, just like in all the movies and documentaries I've seen."

Wiseman got the alligator pinned, and the handler calmly gave him and another man, Todd Christopher, instructions to help her escape from the pool.

Wiseman stayed on top of the reptile until the woman was freed.

He said: "I'm glad he wasn't any bigger. We would have been in trouble. I would say he was about seven feet. I'm 6'3', and he had me beat by a bit."

Todd Christopher's wife, who has a background in nursing, then began performing first aid before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Richins said the handler underwent surgery and is taking antibiotics.

The woman, who is yet to be identified, was filmed chucking the plastic bag holding the newborn baby into a bin.

Fortunately, when police found the newborn in Moscow earlier this month, she was still alive.

In the CCTV footage, the woman is seen walking to the bin and placing a bag inside before hurrying away and looking around so to check if she is being watched.

It is unclear who called the police, but officers arrived on the scene soon afterwards and found the baby girl wrapped in a jacket inside a plastic bag.

The baby, still alive, was sent to a medical centre to be checked by doctors and currently remains in their care in a stable condition, according to reports.

The police tracked down the suspected mother and placed her under arrest for the attempted murder of a newborn child.

Yulia Ivanova, assistant head of the Moscow State Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, confirmed that the suspect has been stripped of any parental rights and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
