Church members have reacted dramatically after what they described as a strange bird flew into their place of worship in Delta State.

Church members have staged an attack on an owl, killing it after it flew into their church.

 

The bird was described as "strange" because church members said it mysteriously flew into their church building even though everywhere was locked tight.

 

Local reports show that the incident happened at the Divine Anointed Eagles Ministry located at Ugberikoko Road, Sapele, Delta State.

 

The bird was killed by aggrieved church members who all say the bird was evil.

 

Pastor Mrs Cassandra Itama of the church revealed that the church building was under lock and key with the glasses, doors and windows very sealed as the church members were shocked as to how the ”strange” bird flew into the church.

A man who was apparently distraught after his fighting with his girlfriend has shot himself in a live Facebook video.

A Thai man live-streamed the moment he shot himself in the head on Facebook - hours after he rowed with his girlfriend.

 

Naphattarakul Phachayakan, 37, and his Noi Sitthinon, 32, were at their home in Samut Prakan, last night, when she accused him of spending too much time drinking with friends.

 

After Noi left, Naphattarakul continued to drink whisky until he went to the car park and launched the live stream at 2.30am this morning.

 

Naphattarakul can be seen holding a .38 revolver to his head before a bright orange flash filled the screen when he pulled the trigger.

 

The stream was still recording when police and his devastated girlfriend arrived at the scene at around 3am.

 

Noi can be seen collapsing in tears as her friends try to comfort her.

 

She said: "This is not real. I don't know he did this. I cannot understand it. I just wanted to go somewhere to sleep. No, it's my fault."

Police Lieutenant Mongkol Yiwivet, Deputy Inspector of the Bangplee district police station, said he was told at 3am about a gunshot in the car park.

 

He added: "At the scene of the parking lot was found the body of Mr Naphattarakul Phachayakan, age 37 years.

 

"He was wounded with a .38 gun at the centre of the forehead, and was face-down and killed in front of a 4-door pickup truck Toyota Vigo.

"The investigation revealed that the deceased stayed with his girlfriend. The dead man and the girlfriend always had aN argument because he was not responsible for the family.

"He would often drink alcohol with neighbours and friends. On the last day, the girlfriend took her clothes and left, leading to the situation."

 

In April last year, Facebook was criticised after a live video of a father hanging his daughter in Phuket, Thailand, remained live for more than 24 hours.

 

The incident led to Facebook reviewing how it monitored violent footage and other objectionable material.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently sparked controversy after he berated Nigerian youths for being 'uneducated' and 'not ready to work'.
 
The President, while speaking during a panel discussion at the Commonwealth business forum in Westminster, London, expressed displeasure with youths in Nigeria because they were dependent on revenue from oil to survive.
 
He said the youths, who make up 60 percent of the population, were waiting to get social amenities free without doing anything.
 
"And then the economy. We have a very young population and our population is estimated conservatively to be 180 million. The 60 percent of the population is below the age of 30. A lot of them have not been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria has been an oil producing country and therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, healthcare and education free."
 
The moderator had asked Buhari to give his final thoughts on the issues discussed. The President said he had fulfilled his campaign promises by improving on the nation’s security and the economy.

What’s your educational and professional background?
 
I am an alumnus of Kings College, Lagos. What is Krystal Digital? What would be an elevator pitch for someone who does not know about your company and your services?
 
Krystal Digital is a fast growing ICT company which specializes in the development and deployment of customized and service oriented software applications as well as IT training. The Company is focused on strengthening the application of ICT in the Education sector, especially the Basic and Secondary Education Sub-sector.
 
Krystal Digital is popular for its MySkool Portal, your flagship School Information Management System for secondary schools in Nigeria. What was the opportunity?
 
The idea that would spawn Krystal Digital was initiated when I attempted to secure my academic transcript. It was a difficult and frustrating experience. It was then I saw potential to develop a School Information Management System that would not only improve the storage/preservation and retrieval of academic records but would also position these schools to harness the benefits of digitization.
 
How many schools in Nigeria today are utilizing your MySkool portal? Give us a profile of your clients?
 
Our products and services currently span across 48% of the Federal Government Colleges in Nigeria. The MySkool Portal Platform runs in fifty Federal Government Colleges across the federation. Most of the Directors at Krystal Digital are products of Unity colleges and we were availed high-quality education and orientation. This played an important role in grooming us into what we are today. Unfortunately, some of these virtues are fast disappearing and it became imperative for us to ensure that technology became an intrinsic part in the education management system in Federal Unity colleges. This is probably one of the reasons why our focus at the moment is on Federal Government Colleges.
 
Walk us through Krystal Digital’s business model. How do you make money to keep the lights on, and where do revenues stand today?

A new report by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has revealed how “55 politicians, high-level public officials and leaders allegedly stole N1, 354tr between 2006 and 2013 from the nation’s treasury.”
 
According to the report, “The amount of money embezzled, misappropriated or stolen by public officials and leaders in the private between 2013 and 2017 has galloped beyond the contemplation of average Nigerians. Evidence abound that Judges, judicial officers, lawyers and military officers are participants in the frenzy of despoliation of national wealth.”
 
The 112 pages report launched today at the CITI-HEIGHT Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos is titled: “Letting the Big Fish Swim” How Those Accused of High-Level Corruption are Getting away with their Crimes and Profiting from Nigeria’s Legacy of Impunity. The report presented to the media by Dr. Esa Onoja, Senior Lecturer of Law, Litigation and Professional ethics at the Nigerian Law School, Abuja Campus discloses that “While the main anti-corruption agencies secured more than 1500 non-high profile convictions between 2000-2017, they could only muster 10 high profile convictions between the periods.”
 
According to the report, “In the investigation, prosecution and trial of high profile corruption cases in Nigeria, justice is imprisoned by snares contrived by actors in the legal community in aid of looters.”
 
The report listed “high profile cases of corruption prosecuted by anti-corruption agencies between 2000 and 2017 as numbering 177 out of which 167 are pending. Total convictions are just 10. Out of the 10, only 3 convictions were obtained after full trial while 7 convictions were based on plea bargaining. Yet 1 of the 3 convictions based on Full trial was discharged by the Supreme Court while 3 of the 7 convicted were granted Presidential pardon.”
 
The report launch chaired by Oladayo Olaide, Deputy Director Macarthur Foundation had in attendance human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN; Barrister Babatunde Ogala; Mrs Juliet Ibekaku- Special Assistant to the President on anti-corruption and Coordinator of the Open Partnership Government; Chinedu Nwagu, Trust Africa; Mr Joy Esezebor, Ford Foundation; David Ukagwu Head, DFID South-West Regional Coordinator; Wahab Shittu; former NBA Chairman, Lagos Mr Martin Ogunleye; Miss Jennifer Ogbechi representing Mrs. Mariam Uwais; Mr Collins Okeke, representing Dr.Olisa Agbakoba; the media, civil society groups and representatives of anticorruption agencies.
 
All the participants expressed commitment to ensure the full implementation of the recommendations contained in the report.
 
The report read in part: “Most corruption cases against high profile defendants witness delays tactics and tricks by defendants to truncate fair trial. The cases depict the stark reality of a captive justice system at the mercy of high profile offenders and their platoon of defence counsel. The negligible number of conviction of high profile defendants explains the probable calculus of offenders that the risk of apprehension and conviction is low.”

“Mr James Ngilari, ex-Governor of Adamawa State was convicted through the effort of the Attorney General of Adamawa State. Salisu Buhari was convicted of forgery under a plea arrangement in 1999. Salisu Buhari’s sentence was a slap on the wrist. President Olusegun Obasanjo later granted him a pardon. Tafa Balogun (former Inspector General of Police), Mrs Celicia Ibru (former CEO of Oceanic Bank), Lucky Igbinedion (former Governor) and Diepreye Alamieyeseigha (former Governor of Bayelsa State) all entered plea agreements with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.”

“Alhaji Shettima Bulama (former CEO of Bank of the North) was convicted after trial. The sentences in each of these cases did not reflect the gravity of the offences. There is a sense that all the offenders, including Tafa Balogun and Celilia Ibru, who publicly returned large amounts of money, were able to retain substantial proceeds of crime. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Alhaji Shettima Bulama were granted Presidential pardon by President Goodluck Jonathan. The outcome of conviction of the high profile offenders seems to be a clear signal that crime pays when you are high profile.”

“The record of proceedings from courts and law reports paint a vivid and irrefutable picture of the causes of truncation of prosecution of high profile in Nigeria. The trajectory of cases through investigation to trial and appeals qualitatively reveals strong evidence of a nexus between weak institutional capacity on the one hand and attitudes of actors in the criminal justice sector that hamstring orderly and efficient collation and presentation of evidence in court, which militates against impartial determination of corruption cases.”

“The sense of simmering undercurrent of commodification of justice and commercialized legal contortions and reasoning pervades investigation, prosecution and trial of high profile corruption cases in Nigeria. Justice stands in the dock this game of musical chairs presided by technical justice while high profile offenders gleefully sit in comfort with their loot, fortified by the efficacy of a vast array of subterfuge and jiggery-pokery of their lawyers, with seeming active and passive connivance of actors in the legal community.”
 
Falana said, “Nigerians should stop rubishing all judges and lawyers. No doubt there are a few corrupt judges and lawyers. Just a few. But majority of members of the legal profession are not corrupt. Our duty as concerned citizens is to identify and isolate the bad judges and lawyers.”
 
According to him, “I can say without any fear of contradiction that the judiciary has developed an inbuilt mechanism to remove bad judges. Between 1999 and 2017 not less than 100 judges have been sanctioned. No other institution in Nigeria in Nigeria can boast of that record. SERAP deserves commendation for elevating the debate about corruption beyond the adoption of Fela Anikulapo-kuti’s record entitled “Authority Stealing”. Unlike the two parties singing “you be thief, I no be thief” SERAP has produced a 112-page occasional publication.”
 
Falana’s remarks read in part: “With the abolition of stay of proceedings politically exposed persons and their lawyers are no longer permitted to frustrate their prosecution. In commending SERAP for producing this report let me say that the areas covered are a tip of the iceberg. Not a single reference was made to the most corrupt institutions in the country.”

“One of them is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which is currently headed by President Mohammadu Buhari. A government’s agency, the National extractive industries transparency initiative has accused the NNPC of illegally withholding $16.8 billion from the federation account.”

“Since the NNPC cannot justify the fraudulent importation of fuel it says that it is not a public institution when asked to produce the certified true copies of importation documents. But i assure you the documents will be produced either now or in future. A government that says it is fighting corruption cannot be allowed to engage in reckless opacity.”
 
The report also states: “The immunity clause has metamorphosed into a potent vehicle of corruption and ignoble conduct. The immunity clause effectively foster corruption and has become a cloak of immunity to commit heinous crimes in our society. For indeed there seems to be some sacred cows amongst the governors who hide behind the cloak of immunity to commit atrocities.”

“Suspicious decisions/rulings by courts in favour of high profile defendants in corruption cases abound. Successful prosecution of high profile cases unduly suffer because of the tendency of courts to favour legalism and technical construction of criminal and procedural legislations instead of real justice. High profile corruption defendants have conveniently latched on to claims of alleged breach of fundamental right to prevent investigation, prosecution and orderly conduct of cases by courts. Instances of sly and twisted claims of breach of fundamental rights by high profile defendants against anti-corruption agencies abound and are readily available from law reports.”

“The problem with administration of criminal justice Nigeria is not the absence of laws or institutions, but the will of actors within and outside criminal justice institutions to put aside their personal or group interests and apply the law. That is the main reason for the low level of conviction of high profile corruption defendants in Nigeria. However, no institution is perfect. Periodic reform is beneficial because it ensures that laws and institutions keep up with the times.”

“The National Assembly should amend provisions in anti-corruption legislations, criminal justice legislations, and the Evidence Act that enables defendants to prolong trials or that are disadvantageous to efficient presentation of cases in court. The Executive should avoid interference with the work of anti-corruption agencies. Money appropriated in budgets should be released as and when due.”

“Anti-corruption agencies should weed out compromised officials. These agencies should also demonstrate that they are truly independent. Training and re-training of investigators and prosecutors should be a priority. There should be less dependence on personnel from other agencies. The Nigerian Bar Association should establish a monitoring mechanism to check abuse of court process by legal practitioners. The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee should be empowered to discipline even the sacred cows.”

A mother who looks way younger than her true age, has been often mistaken to be the girlfriend of her own son.

A single mum has revealed she is often mistaken for her 20-year-old son’s girlfriend or sister because she looks so young.
 
Shimmi Munshi, 41, is the envy of all her friends and family, who believe she has discovered the secret of eternal youth.
 
She said she's been accused of having cosmetic surgery and splashing out on fancy skin creams and beauty treatments - but it couldn't be further from the truth.
 
Shimmi, from Bolton, said: "As an adult, I’ve always looked young. As my friends began ageing, I seemed to go in the opposite direction, but I’ve no idea why!

"As a teenager, I was one of the taller ones, so if anything, I looked a little older than my friends. But at 5ft 5in, I stopped growing, and I have a very slim, petite frame.

“I feel like the female version of Peter Pan – the girl who never grew up."
 
At 20, Shimmi gave birth to Ameen, her only son.

“I was a single mum, juggling work and motherhood, and anyone would think the stress might have started to show," she admitted.

"Instead, I seemed to stop ageing. I didn’t notice it particularly, but all my friends did.

“They were all moaning that I’d discovered the secret of eternal youth and they wanted me to share it.

"At the school gates, the other mums would ask if I’d had plastic surgery, or if I had spent a fortune on skin creams and beauty treatments.

“And they were gutted to learn I had no secrets. There was no mystery at all to the way I looked.

“I’ve certainly never had cosmetic surgery. And my beauty routine consists of baby wipes and whatever moisturiser is on special offer in the supermarket!"

Despite not buying expensive beauty products, Shimmi said she does take care of herself.
 
"I drink green tea and I don’t smoke or drink booze," she explained.

"I’m a member of the local gym and I drink lots of water. But I am no fitness fanatic or beauty queen.

"In fact, I rarely look in the mirror. I don’t actually think about my looks much at all.”
 
Shimmi’s parents, Siraj and Nooie, are pensioners, yet both look great for their age, so she suspects her youthful looks might be down to lucky genetics.
 
"If anyone deserves credit, it must be them," she laughed.
 
But her looks have at times been a nuisance.

"I’ve been asked for ID buying alcohol so many times and sometimes they just refuse to serve me outright," she said.

"It’s worth it though to see the look on the shop assistant’s face when I hand over my ID.
 
“When my son was younger, people we didn’t know presumed we were either brother and sister or a couple.

“We were so close, because I had brought him up on my own, and so there was a special bond between us.

“Anyone who met us would just naturally treat him like he was my boyfriend.

“We went on holiday to Poland, and I had booked an excursion, and the tour guide wouldn’t believe that we were mum and son, he kept insisting we were a couple and Ameen was so embarrassed.

“Another time, in Turkey, the locals thought we were brother and sister.

“At Ameen’s prom night, people thought we were a couple, too. It’s very flattering and it made me giggle but it drove him mad.
 
“Even at parents’ evening at high school, his teacher said to me, 'We really would rather see Ameen’s mum.’ She thought I was his sister!

“As a teenager, he didn’t like all the attention."
 
 
Shimmi still gets mistaken for Ameen’s girlfriend. He is now 20 and has got used to the constant comments about his mum’s looks.
 
“I think he’s finally accepted all the fuss," she said.

"He still lives at home and we are as close as ever, so it hasn’t affected our relationship at all. He’s training in IT and I’m very proud of him.”
 
Shimmi’s appearance is made all the more surprising because she suffers from a debilitating disease known as gastroparesis, which makes her vomit up to 60 times a day.
 
She has spent the last 10 years in and out of hospital – and yet still manages to look the picture of health.
 
“I might be feeling absolutely rubbish but somehow I still manage to look young," she said.
 
"I wish I had some special secret I could share – but the truth is, I’ve no idea how I do it.

“Hopefully my good luck will last into old age and I will be still be looking 30 when I’m 80!”

Thousands of teachers who were just appointed by the All Progressives Congress-led administration in Kaduna State have been relieved of their duties.

Kaduna State government has dismissed 4,562 newly-recruited teachers a few weeks after they were issued with employment letters to replace those sacked for failing a competency test.
 
The state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ja’afaru Sani, who stated this at a briefing yesterday, explained that the newly-recruited teachers were sacked because they found their ways into the service of state government through dubious means.
 
The state government had sacked 22,000 teachers that failed competency test based on questions meant for primary four pupils and announced that it will replace them with competent teachers, based on a competitive recruitment exercise.

However, at the end of the exercise, some of the teachers could not correctly write acceptance letters, forcing the state government, according to the Commissioner, to organise another screening for all the newly-recruited teachers.
 
The 11,335 newly-recruited teachers, predominantly degree holders, including a few with Master’s degrees, have already been deployed to over 4,000 primary schools.
 
“This was after they had undergone vigorous induction training, along with the remaining old teachers, to equip them with modern teaching techniques and effective classroom management.

“We are hoping that between now and next month ending, we will be concluding the recruitment process of the balance of 13,665 teachers.”

The commissioner added that “we want to equip our students with the information and communication technology skills to enable them compete favourably in the current technology-driven world.”
 
The commissioner said to achieve technology-based teaching, the state was distributing tablet computers to teachers and students, as well as installing smart boards in schools.
 
Sani noted that the state Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, had concluded the recruitment of 11,335 teachers out of the 25,000 vacancy it earlier advertised; about 40,000 applicants sat for the recruitment examination, out of which 27,639 were invited for oral interview.
 
He added that 15,897 of the applicants were successful, but subjected to further screening to fish out those allegedly smuggled into the list.
 
Sani added that the applications for the remaining balance of 13,665 are already being received, adding that the process will commence once approval is granted by Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Olamilekan Adeola, senator representing Lagos west, was abducted by unknown gunmen at the national assembly on Wednesday. 
 
TheCable learnt that Adeola also known as Yayi was picked up in front of white house (the building housing the two chambers) but he later escaped.
 
An aide of the lawmaker said the incident might not be unconnected to his call for the sack of all service chiefs.
 
While speaking on the nationwide killings, especially the recent on in Nasarawa state, on Tuesday, Olamilekan urged President Muhammadu Buhari to the sack of heads of all security agencies.
 
The aide of the lawmaker said his principal suffered a sprain to his ankle after he jumped out of the vehicle that was used to kidnap him.
 
“Yesterday at the floor of the plenary, senator Yayi Adeola, while lending his voice to the killings in Nasarawa he called for the sacking of all service chiefs and heads of security agencies,” said the aide who preferred anonymity.

“Today, before the mace was seized, Senator Yayi Adeola was actually kidnapped. Not attempted kidnapped by unknown gunmen at the national assembly right in front of the white house.

“They took him all the way to the house of reps – they were trying to escape through the villa gate it was at that point he had to maneuver and jumped out of the vehicle. As I speak to you, he still has a sprain on his leg.”
 
The lawmaker narrated the incident on Twitter but said he was responding to treatment.

A nine-year-old girl has suffered a really tragic fate after falling from a three-storey building in Port-Harcourt.

Serious tragedy was averted recently after a 9-year-old girl identified as Chidera, survived when she fell from a 3-storey building.
 
The young girl is said to have fallen from the building following a misstep while playing with her friends. The tragic event was said to have occurred on Wednesday, 11 April 2018.
 
Local reports show that the sad incident happened at 3B Ekwe Street, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
 
 
The parents were said to have left her with other children for their various businesses before the accident occurred.
 
According to the girl’s friends, she ran from inside the passage to outside corridor, where she accidentally pushed the building protector off – causing her to fall freely from the building.
 
The girl was rushed to the nearby private hospital for treatment.

The family of a retired Chief Superintendent of Police has been thrown into mourning after the ex-police officer shot himself dead at his home in Ogun State.

An ex-police officer has shot himself dead at his residence on Sharaton Estate, Olaogun, in the Ijoko area of Ogun State leaving his family in a state of mourning.
 
According to PUNCH Metro, the late Chief Superintendent of Police identified as David Agholor, who was the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Enugu State Police Command, reportedly shot himself in the head.
 
The deceased's family could not explain the reason for his action as he had no history of depression. He had called his eldest daughter last Thursday and handed over the keys to his two houses to her.
 
It was gathered that the ex-cop was said to have gone to the back of one of the buildings and shot himself in the head and died on the spot.
 
According to a source, the deceased’s family members had noticed that he was behaving strangely a day to the incident, adding that Agholor insisted that nothing was wrong with him when he was questioned.
 
The source said, “He started behaving unusually on Wednesday evening. When they asked him what was wrong with him, he said he was okay. When he woke up on Thursday, he went to his wife’s bedroom to greet her.

“Afterwards, he had a bath and dressed up. He looked corporate. They asked him where he was going to, but he did not talk. He called his first daughter and handed over the keys to his houses to her. He has two houses on a plot of land. He and his family members lived in one of the houses.

“The other is an uncompleted building, but it has been roofed. He went to the back of the uncompleted building and the next thing the family heard was a gunshot. He shot himself in the head.”
 
Another source said Agholor had received some strange telephone calls two days before the incident, adding that the suicide had thrown the family into grief.
 
He said, “He was a retired police officer and a former OC SARS, Enugu State Police Command. I learnt that he had received some strange calls before that Wednesday when his behaviour changed. It was very pathetic.

“He was living fine with his family and did not show any sign of depression all these while. Why he killed himself is still a mystery to everyone. His family members are mourning. It is a sad incident they will not want to share with outsiders. It was reported at the Agbado Police Station.”
 
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the suicide.
 
He said the corpse of the retired officer had been deposited in a morgue, adding that investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
 
He said, “His daughter reported at the station that he shot himself in the head while he was in the living room. The scene of the incident was visited and photographed by policemen.

“It is a case of suicide and the command is investigating to know what made him to take that decision. He was a former OC SARS in Enugu.”

A team put together by the leadership of the Nigerian police has successfully recovered the senate mace that was stolen yesterday.

Sequel to the invasion of the Senate Chambers of the National Assembly, Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 18th April, 2018 by some suspected thugs who disrupted the Senate Plenary Session and carted away the Mace of the Red Chambers, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris NPM, mni, immediately instituted a high-powered Police Investigation and Intelligence Team coordinated by the IGP Monitoring Unit of the Force and further directed a total lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory with intense surveillance patrol and thorough Stop and Search Operations at various Police checkpoints with a view to arresting perpetrators and possible recovery of the stolen Mace.
 
The Police teams engaged in massive raids of identified criminal spots/flashpoints, stop and search operations, visibility and confidence building patrols, intelligence gathering which forced the suspected miscreants to abandon the Mace at a point under the flyover before the City Gate, where a patriotic passerby saw it and alerted the Police.
 
While a discreet investigation into the incident is still ongoing to arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice, the Nigeria Police Force appreciates the spirited members of the public, most especially motorists within Abuja Metropolis for their support, cooperation and timely information during the rigorous stop and search operations for the recovery of the Mace.
 
The renewed commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee protection of Lives and Property, Peace and Stability and sustain democracy in the country remains unequivocal and unwavering.

An Australian doctor has invented a machine that can assist people kill themselves which has caused outrage around the world.

'Sarco' a euthanasia machine that can assist people to kill themselves at the click of a button, has triggered outrage after it was unveiled at a funeral show in Amsterdam recently.
 
The “3D-printed machine” invented by Philip Nitschke, an Australian doctor who has been advocating legalising euthanasia, comes with a capsule and coffin.

“Once inside the capsule, clients can click a button and the canister of nitrogen inside will be released to fill the capsule,’’ Nitschke said.
 
According to Nitschke, the person inside will soon loses consciousness and passes away.
 
At the annual Funeral Expo in central Amsterdam on Saturday, the model was displayed with a virtual reality headset that enabled visitors to feel what it was like to sit inside.
 
Nitschke planned to launch the machine, which could be 3D-printed and assembled anywhere in the world, in 2019.
 
However the device has triggered a controversy over the morality and legal implications of committing suicide.
 
Pro-life organisations are warning that the machine could cause a huge spike in suicides.
 
Nancy Valko, a spokesperson for National Association of Pro-life Nurses in Missouri, whose daughter committed suicide after reading a book that discusses the “practicalities of self-deliverance”, told British Daily Mail that assisted suicide is open to abuse.

“It’s glamourising and normalising suicide,’’ she said.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has claimed that Nigerians now enjoy better electricity than in the past. He made the claim while speaking during the April 2018 edition of the monthly power sector operators meeting in Umuahia, Abia State.
 
He also claimed that Nigerians now spend less money to procure alternative power as they now get more volumes of electricity supplied to their homes and offices.
 
However, according to the report by ThisDay, available supply statistics from the Advisory Power Team in the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has contradicted the minister’s claims as power generation averaged only 3,847.8 megawatts in the first 104 days of 2018.
 
“We are on a journey to a destination of promise and eventual prosperity and I use this occasion to salute the efforts and contributions of all those who have brought us this far.

"Even if those who were most vocal in condemnation when the situation appeared very dire are now uttering some muted acknowledgment that it has improved, we must continue to draw inspiration from well-meaning and right thinking Nigerians who were gracious enough to publicly acknowledge that: they are saving some money from diesel they used to spend for generators; they are running their generators for fewer hours; and they are getting comparably more power than before,” Fashola said.

“It is because of those gracious and well-meaning and right thinking Nigerians that we must dig deeper, work harder and be more determined to improve service delivery,” he added.
 
Available supply statistics from the Advisory Power Team in the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has contradicted the minister’s claims as only measured growth was recorded in the first 104 days of 2018.
 
The statistics showed that from January 1 to April 14, the country produced a total of 400,171 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which represented an average daily generation and supply of 3,847.8MW.
 
Within the period as well, it was unable to generate 261,944MW of power due to a combination of gas, water, transmission and distributions constraints, bringing its average daily power loss to 2,518.7MW.
 
As regards the financial revenue it could not get from its failings within the period, the government’s statistics indicated that for 104 days, a total of N125.774 billion was not gained by the sector, representing an average daily financial loss of N1.209 billion.
The statistics also showed that the sector recorded a partial system collapse on April 12, but did not give further details on this.
 
Additionally, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in February disclosed that the amount of electricity required by its members to carry out their respective manufacturing operations every day had risen to 14,882MW, most of which it added were self-generated.
 
MAN also said despite the huge power consumption levels of its members, it found it uneconomical that up to 2000MW of the power that electricity generation companies (Gencos) can generate are stranded because electricity distribution companies (Discos) are unable to evacuate them to points of need.
 
To this end, it said it would be looking up to the new eligible customers’ regulation that was recently introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to at least cut down its expenses on self-generation of power.

An expert from the University of Melbourne's Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute has opened up on what some cups of coffee per day does to the human heart.

Drinking up to three cups of tea or coffee per day could protect people from developing irregular heartbeats or arrhythmia, a new study revealed on Tuesday.
 
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world and the most common form of cognitive enhancement.
 
However, more than 80 per cent of clinicians in the United States recommend patients with palpitations or arrhythmia to abstain or reduce caffeine.
 
But the new study which involved researchers in the University of Melbourne’s Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute along with partners in the United States consistently demonstrated a reduction in atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeats) with increasing levels of caffeine ingestion.
 
The research analysed multiple population-based studies which involved 228,465 participants to find the frequency of atrial fibrillation decreased by six per cent in regular coffee drinkers, while a further analysis of 115,993 patients showed a risk reduction of 13 per cent.

“There is a public perception, often based on anecdotal experience, that caffeine is a common acute trigger for heart rhythm problems,’’ lead author Peter Kistler from the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute said.
 
“Our extensive review of the medical literature suggests this is not the case.’’

“Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea may have long term anti-arrhythmic properties mediated by antioxidant effects and antagonism of adenosine,’’ Kistler concluded.
 
“In numerous population-based studies, patients who regularly consume coffee and tea at moderate levels have a lower lifetime risk of developing heart rhythm problems and possibly improved survival.’’
 
However, due to significantly higher concentrations of caffeine, researchers advised that energy drinks should be avoided for people with pre-existing structural heart disease.

A horror incident has claimed the live of a 21-year-old woman after she was brutally murdered in front of her child.

A 21-year-old woman has lost her life after she was stabbed to death in front of her two-year-old child and husband during a robbery in the Cottonlands area of South Africa on Tuesday.
 
According to PhoenixSun, local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene.
 
At about 11:58am, a motorist was driving along an unused dirt road when he noticed the toddler sitting on top of a bleeding woman. The man drove to the RUSA Operations Centre in Verulam and reported the incident.
 
Reaction officers and paramedics were dispatched to the area and after a brief search with the SAPS, the victim, her child and husband were located alongside a sugarcane plantation.
 
Medics attempted to resuscitate the woman but she died at the scene. Her child, who was seated on top of her body, had to be removed by officers.
 
According to her husband, the couple was on route to their home in the BS Farm area when they were approached by two men, who robbed the woman of her Mobicell cellphone.
 
One suspect then drew a knife and stabbed the woman on her back before fleeing.
 
Reaction officers are in the area and currently searching for the suspects. The RUSA helicopter will be lifting off shortly to intensify the search for the murderers.

A community in Cross River State has reportedly invoked its ancestral god to stop the $1 billion Virgin City project in the area.

Indigenes of Etab Ayip in Kasuk II Qua clan, Calabar Municipality, have invoked their ancestral god, Mbiam, to stop work on the proposed $1 billion Calabar Virgin City Project over an alleged encroachment on the community by the Cross River State Government.
 
Niger-Delta Voice learned that the Calabar Virgin City Project sited near the Rice City and Ayade Industrial Boulevard when completed, would have a building material market, auto parts market, wood market, water world fair ground and artificial lake as well as hospital.
 
Other facilities include a golf course, clothing market, hotel, supermarket, residential area auxiliary, dance square, kindergarten, primary and secondary schools.
 
Etap Ayip Kasuk  II community, the landlord community which owns extensive portion of virgin land along the MCC/Idundu Road and Jonathan By-pass in Calabar Municipality has barred  the state government from accessing large portion of the land purportedly acquired by the Ayade administration for the Calabar Virgin City Project.
 
Several indigenes of the area, mobilised by chiefs of the villages and traditional institution, took possession of the land, stringing palm fronds round the area and preventing anybody from accessing the land.
 
Speaking with NDV, the Clan Head of Kasuk II Qua Clan, HRH Ededem Ayito said they have no issues with the Ayade- led administration as far as the Virgin City Project was concerned but urged the government to do the right thing by doing proper consultation.
 
He asserted: “We, as a people can categorically tell you that we are not aware of what the government is doing on our land as far as the Virgin City Project is concerned, we were not consulted by government or any of its representatives.

“In all honesty and fairness, when the government came to intimate us about the project last year, they did not give us full details of the dimension and size of land they needed, neither did they tell us the nature of the project but as a community that has respect for constituted authority, we allowed the groundbreaking ceremony to hold in December after which we thought they would come back and do the needful.
 
“But we were surprised when we saw equipment moved into the place and excavation started without proper consultation. Since we had waited for them since last year and they did not come, we resorted to our culture and tradition. We invoked a traditional injunction, Mbiam, on the parcel of land and it will remain there until the right thing is done.

“We are not against development; contrary to rumours and speculations making the rounds that we are mobilising to stop government, they are not true. The only thing we are asking is that due process be followed. If the facilitator is a private company, they should come out plain and let us know, if the government wants to acquire the land based on overriding public interest, they should also tell us what they want to use it for before bringing in equipment.

“We, the people of Kasuk Qua Clan II are responsible and law-abiding citizens and will never take laws into our hands. The traditional injunction (Mbiam/Ekpe) we placed is our own way of making our position on the matter known. We are not against the government of Prof. Ben Ayade in any way but we want them to follow due process and do the right thing.”
  
On his part, Commissioner for Lands, Elder John Inyang said the step taken by the community was not in the best interest of all concerned, adding that government will continue to negotiate with the community to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
 
It would be recalled that Governor Ayade had promised during the groundbreaking ceremony on the 29th  of December, 2017, that he would carry the people of Etab Ayip along.
 
His words: “We are going to ensure that the community is a part of core function of the organ of this investment. Emphasis will be given to the host community during recruitment for labour and small contracts.

“So the host community would have a role to play. I assure you that we don’t want to build an estate that the community itself will not afford to live in, they shall be carried along all the way.”

Some male students of Ambrose Ali University in Ekpoma who are engaging in homosexual activities in the area, have been apprehended by security operatives during initiation.

A school hostel known as Igbinedion male hostel which some undergraduate male students allegedly used as a gay club in Ekpoma, Delta state, was over the past weekend raided by detectives from the Edo State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
 
According to a report by DailyTrust, five suspected members of the club identified as Osareinti Omo, 23, Odigie Matthew, 20, Sunday George, 20, Festus Akinbayo, 25 and Ibrahim Duru, were arrested during the raid which was conducted at the wee hours of Friday.
 
The group was allegedly performing initiation ceremony for some teenage boys who were recently introduced into the club when they were arrested based on a tip-off from members of the public on the activities of the group.
 
A police source said the gang collected the sum of N10,000 from new intakes with the promise that they were going to be given protection throughout their stay in Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma.
 
In his confessional statement to the police, Ibrahim Duru said he was initiated into the club by one Osanyade Michael in 2015 while he was in year one. He said Michael, who is the leader of the club, is presently on the run, and that he was wanted by the police.
 
He said: “I see nothing wrong in my being gay. It is my life. Our meeting place is in Igbinedion male hostel, Ekpoma. We meet there mainly at weekends but it was later extended to Tuesdays and Thursdays.
 
"Other members of the gang are Osazuwa Samuel, Williams Aghedo, Agala Christian, Atamamin Uyi Festus and Omolegie Samuel.

“I was arrested in 2015 along with Osanyade Michael when police raided Igbinedion male hostel. We were detained but Osanyade jumped bail and since them we have not seen him.
 
"Others were later allowed to go on bail with the promise that we were going to put an end to gay activities in the area. Some of us went back recruiting members secretly. Presently we are about 20 in number. People pay us.”
