In 1991, a Nigerian pastor was devoured and eaten in front of many people at a zoo in Ibadan while trying to replicate 'Daniel the prophet bible story'.
Body of late Pastor Daniel’ Abodunrin after he was devoured by the lions
This story happened years ago and I always wondered how it really went down. I now present it to you, as narrated by Abiyamo. It is very interesting and eye opening.
“No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.
– Isaiah 54:17
The city of Ibadan in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria is one of the largest in West Africa. It is home to the first university in Nigeria, University of Ibadan, established by the colonial masters in 1948. One of the most famous features of this great citadel of learning is its Zoological Garden, which is one of the oldest in the country. The zoo plays host to various animals but the most legendary of them all are the lions. For many visitors, a trip to the famed zoo is not complete without seeing the majestic lions. So it was during the Easter Lenten season of 1991, all of Ibadan was buzzing with excitement of the season and naturally, one of the prime spots of attraction for many families was the University of Ibadan Zoo. Families, couples and tourists trooped into the zoo that fateful day.
However, unknown to all of the other visitors, there was one particular visitor who had another sinister agenda. Bishop (some referred to him as a pastor or a bishop) ‘Daniel’ Abodunrin’s intention that fateful day was not to see the lions and take some memorable pictures with them.
His goal was to demonstrate something that had never been done before. His plan was to replicate what was written in the Holy Bible thousands of years ago. It was the story of a Jewish boy in Jerusalem named Daniel who was captured by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon who served in the king’s court until the time of Cyrus, the Persian emperor.
ENTERING THE DEN OF THE LIONS
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1:26
Fast forward to 1991 AD. Location: Ibadan. A pastor in West Africa attempts to recreate what was narrated in the sixth chapter of the Book of Daniel. Pastor Abodunrin donned a flowing red robe and clutched his big Holy Bible. As he made his way for the lion enclosure, alarmed zoo keepers shouted and warned him (some other records stated that he sneaked in and it all happened very fast while another version has it that he managed to convince one of the zoo keepers to allow him enter and let God demonstrate signs and wonders saying that the God of Daniel is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow).
One thing was clear: Abodunrin did not listen to any of those warning him. Terrified families who were enjoying their picnic looked on with a bewildering mixture of shock and terror, screams rented the serene atmosphere of the zoo but Abodunrin was just chanting Bible verses at the top of his voice and speaking in tongues. He made it into the enclosure of the lions and stared at them. The lions stared back at him. It was a most discomforting sight for everyone, including the lions. An exchange of death stares and at a point, a deafening silence fell over the whole place. It was all like a movie. Devout Christians in the crowd were waiting to see a faith-enhancing miracle while some others toughened their minds for the bloodiest drama of the century.
Driven by the zeal and passion of religion and with the utmost belief that he would be save by the Holy Spirit or that the angels will paralyze the lions as they did for Daniel, Abodunrin did not stop chanting Bible verses and speaking in tongues, wriggling his body under the robes, providing what was the spectacle of the year for everyone in the zoo. A crowd had gathered. But inside the den of the lions, something interesting was going on with the Nigerian Daniel and the feline beasts. As Abodunrin approached them, the big cats retreated and moved towards a corner of their cage, that was their instinct. They withdrew from the marauding ‘man of God’.
At that moment, everyone was watching the entire drama as if it was a dream. Here was a man in a flowing red robe, armed with nothing but a large Bible, approaching some of the fiercest creatures on earth. When Abodunrin jumped into the lions’ cage, the lions moved into a tense retreat. Abodunrin stepped closer.
He seemed determined to cow the lions and turn them into goats. He felt he possessed all the heavenly authority and spiritual powers to summon angels to weaken the lions. The only way to paralyze a lion in an instant is to use a tranquilizer dart, which is just common sense. But the prophet felt things in the physical world are controlled in the realm of the spirits and there was no need for any tranquilizer dart, he would use his copy of the Bible as a sedative for the lions. He brushed off those who warned him of an imminent death that they had carnal minds and could not understand things of the spirit. Rational people in the audience looked on in horror as it looked like a feast was ready.
He might have mistaken the retreat of the lions for a sign of weakness or that the angels were actually working their wonders already. Like a deranged mind, Abodunrin kept chanting Bible verses, making gestures at the lions and commanding them to be still. He was calling on the God of Daniel who saved the prophet in Babylon to show awesome power. As he made a final approach towards the lions, what happened next was…
“No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.
– Isaiah 54:17
In a flash, the lions lifted their massive bodies and charged at Abodunrin. The Bible flew away and he landed with a thud. A bitter struggle ensued and the terrified crowd could not believe the scene before their eyes. It seemed everyone was too confused or fixated to even do anything.
Pastor Abodunrin could not believe his eyes and as the lions landed on him, the look of terror in his eyes could only be better imagined. In a matter of seconds, he was torn to shreds. He died on the spot and the lions snacked on his remains. A single, well-aimed bite from a lion is enough to kill an adult human being in a matter of seconds. Abodunrin’s red robe was redder with the splatter of his blood all over the place, his torn and bloodied Bible in one corner of the lions’ cage
What remained of the audacious preacher was later recovered and you can see it in the photo. Today, many preachers across the globe have made attempts to recreate the narrated stories and miracles of the Bible but they have ended disastrously, from the pastor who drowned while trying to walk on water to another pastor who entered a lion’s den in Taiwan only to be wounded after shouting to the lions: ‘Jesus would save you!’. Nigerians have to learn to embrace rational thinking instead of beclouding their senses with religious ideologies that will only end in sorrow and offer nothing of value to humanity.
When ebola disease broke out in Nigeria, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo angered not a few Nigerians when he said that even if people drank ebola virus, nothing would happen to them because they were children of God.
THE AFTERMATH
In an instant, the story was all over the country that a pastor who entered the lion’s den was mauled to death and consumed by the beasts. Many could not believe their ears. However, there were some Christians who actually believe that the pastor was a true man of God and that the lions were actually possessed by demons to have attacked the anointed ‘man of God’. This set of Christians were enraged and demanded that the lions be killed.
At this point, I will make reference to the experience of a journalist from that era, someone who actually had the experience of the saga, Akeem Soboyode, he wrote of the incident in July 2004:
About a year later, I also had cause to comment on the sad and tragic escapade of a pastor who deliberately sneaked into the lion’s den at the University of Ibadan zoo and was mauled to death by a lion. Despite my growing reservation then regarding issues of religion, my interest in writing an article on that issue came primarily from the fact that I am a proud alumnus of the university and paid many visits to that zoo while I was a student there. Immediately after the tragic event, many suggested that the lion be put to death.
I argued in my article, also published in the PUNCH, that the lion was a beast, not a rational being as one would expect its victim to be. That was the way nature programmed it to react to such an event, and the unthinking “Daniel” should have known better. I don’t recall if the lion was eventually destroyed, but I do remember that after the article was published, one of my Christian friends made a comment along these lines: “Akeem, don’t you know the lion must have been possessed to have killed the pastor? Why should it deserve to live?”

A group of election observers, YIAGA AFRICA, have aired their views about the militarization of Ekiti State ahead of tomorrow's gubernatorial race.
File Photo

A group of election observers, YIAGA AFRICA, has expressed concerns with the overzealous and hostile conduct of security personnel deployed to Ekiti state for Saturday governorship election.

The Executive Director, YIAGA AFRICA , Samson Itodo, therefore, called on security agencies “to uphold the principles of non-partisanship, transparency, civil policing and professionalism in the conduct of the affairs”.

Itodo said his group is employing parallel vote tabulation (PVT) methodology to provide timely and accurate information on the conduct, accreditation, voting and counting in Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.

He said the PVT, which he described as “gold standard for citizenship observation” of election, would also enhance its independent verification of the official results of the election as announced by the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC).

Itodo, who spoke at a pre-election press conference in Ado Ekiti, urged Ekiti people to redirect attention to issues in the election and refrain from listening to rumour and hate campaigns capable of undermining citizen confidence in the integrity of elections.

He urged INEC to “respect the results counting and announcement procedures including the posting of Form EC 60E even with the introduction of new electronic collation technologies’.

The observers expressed concerns with the overzealous and hostile conduct of security personnel deployed to the state for the state for the election, calling on security agencies “to uphold the principles of non-partisanship, transparency, civil policing and professionalism in the conduct of the affairs”.

According to Itodo, YIAGA, though its Watching the Vote (WTV) Project, will, on Saturday, deploy 500 stationary observers to a representative statistical sample of 250 polling units and 25 mobile observers located in all 16 local government areas (LGAs) of Ekiti State” in addition to deployment of 16 collation centre observers to each of the council area collation centres.

He said that YIAGA Africa had been involved in election observation in Nigeria since 2007, promoting democracy, constitutionalism and youth participation in Africa, and achieving its goal through research, capacity development and policy advocacy.

Ahead of Saturday's gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, a throw-back photo showing Governor Ayodele Fayose, and guber candidate, Kayode Fayemi, sharing a bottle of wine, has emerged online.

Fayemi and Fayose

Looking at the current situation in Ekiti, those not conversant with the past would think Ayodele Fayose, the state governor, and Kayode Fayemi, his predecessor, have always been on warring path.

Long before the state governorship election slated for Saturday, the political rivalry of the duo could easily pass as one of the most popular in the country — just like that of Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo.

But the two have not always been like this.

A picture of the good old days when the two were more or less compatriots is currently in circulation. The duo could be seen sharing a table, relaxed, in what appears to be a party, with a bottle of wine in front of them.

Part of those days when their relationship used to be rosy was during the 2010 governorship election in the state when Fayose campaigned for Fayemi.

A candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the former minister of mines and steel development was seeking to defeat Segun Oni, who ran and won under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But they fell apart and ran against each other in the last governorship election in the state. With backing of the federal government, Fayose pulled the rug off Fayemi’s feet.

This time around, Fayemi has the advantage as his party controls the government at the centre but it’s not clear if APC or PDP would carry the day.

As uncertain as the result is, one thing is certain. Even if both men will come together under one roof again, it can’t be tonight. Politics sure springs surprises but not that of Fayemi and Fayose partying on the eve of a crucial election.

Chillal had requested that his cut nails be immortalised in a museum and the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum in Times Square responded positively.

They flew Chillal from Pune to New York to cut his nails and memorialise them forever in the museum. The museum will host a "nail clipping ceremony" today where Chillal's nails will be cut.

It is estimated that the nails have a combined length of 909.6 centimeters (9.1 metres). Chillal's longest single nail is his thumbnail, measuring 197.8 centimeters.

He had decided to grow his nails when he was beaten up by his school teacher for breaking the teacher's long nail.

College students have achieved a laudable feat after they managed to develop a cheap obstacle detector to held the blind.
File photo: A blind person

The News Agency of Nigeria has reported that students from China’s Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics have developed an obstacle detector for the blind with much lower cost.

According to the report, the initial cost of the obstacle detector is 30 yuan (about 4.5 dollars).

Domestic enterprises currently manufacture devices for visual impairments, equipped with cameras, however, such devices range from 3,000 to 8,000 yuan.

The detector composed of a single chip and two ultrasonic sensors which can distinguish and measure obstacles and roadblocks in front of it.

By holding the device in the palm of their hand, blind people can traverse the road more easily as the device will make a sound when there are obstacles ahead.

“The alarm rings once when a person comes within one meter of an obstacle.

“The alarm rings twice when the person is within 60 cm, three times at 30 cm,”
Developer Ma Wang was quoted as saying.

The detector has not been industrialised.

Ma Wang said his team would make it more portable and stable as well as smaller and more accurate at detecting objects.

A senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Prosecution, has launched a new online platform ‘Properti Tracka,’ which will aid in tracking down the illegal properties.
Okoi Obono-Obla

The Federal Government has promised to release the names of 200 individuals who own property purchased with illegally-acquired funds.

Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Property, Okoi Obono-Obla, said this at the “Tackling corruption through improving transparency in property ownership” Project, held by the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), in Abuja, yesterday on Thursday.

Obono-Obla, who is also the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Prosecution, also launched ANEEJ’s new online platform ‘Properti Tracka,’ which will aid in tracking down the illegal properties.

He described the platform as being one of the single most important contributions towards the fight against corruption.

“Anybody who has taken what doesn’t belong to him should return it to Nigeria or else, face being tracked down. Properti Tracka will expose those who have taken what belongs to the entire Nigerian populace.

“We will start by making available to the public the 200 names of those who own massive properties in Maitama, Abuja, most of whom are highly placed people in the country, some in the government, some in past governments. If they cannot explain where they got the money to build such massive properties, they should quietly return it back to the state.”

ANEEJ Executive Director, David Ugolor, explained that Properti Tracka will help unveil owners of these and more properties and find out whether they are actually paying appropriate taxes to the government.

“The Properti Tracka is a citizen tool to identify these owners of illegally-acquired properties and also to push for clean property in Nigeria.

“The source of building the property must be from a genuine source. We will work with federal agencies, the tax office, and law enforcement agencies as well.”

Here is the story of a young graduate who due to the unemployment rate in Nigeria, was forced to take up menial job so he can sustain his family while waiting for a better job.

The lady sharing the story
A Twitter user identified simply as Beth (@icecoldmidsss) on Twitter, has taken to the social networking platform to share a story of her encounter with a commercial bus driver in Lagos.
The young lady revealed that as soon as she took the front seat of the bus, she knew the driver was a graduate due to his spoken English.
She said that as they kept on talking, the man disclosed that he graduated about four years ago but could not go to Law school because he did not have enough money.
Here's how Beth narrated the story of her encounter below;
****************
“I was in a bus today & I decided to sit in front. The driver’s English was so clean and fluent and I found that really impressive. On the dashboard I saw a book on constitutional law or something and I asked if I could read it.
He was like sure. I asked if it was his. He said yes. I opened the book and started to read. Then I asked if he studied law. He said yes. ‘Why aren’t you practicing?’. His response was ‘it’s a long story’.
I became quiet for a while, sensing that the conversation was starting to make him feel somehow and he didn’t want to continue. Then I asked how long it had been since he graduated. Man said 4 years. ‘You have to go to law school after you graduate right?’ He said yes. ‘Why haven’t you?’ His reply was ‘I don’t have enough funds’.
I was more than heartbroken. So I continued the conversation with him and basically, he has been a bus driver for a while because all he’s tryna do is put food on the table. And hasn’t been using his degree because he doesn’t have enough funds.
Then I asked ‘if you get enough money to go to law school and be called to bar, will you go back?’ His answer was ‘Sure! Why not? I would love to practice law more than anything in the world’.
Okay I don’t know how this works but I really would love to see this man follow his dreams and passion. So guys. If you’re willing to help in anyway, or you know someone that might be interested in helping this man, please send me a DM.
Also please feel free to mention individuals /organizations that you think can be of help. I will not hesitate to dm them as soon as possible. God bless y’all.”

Over the years, some Nigerian superstars have been accused of stealing songs and musical concept from other artistes.
There is no doubt at all that plagiarism has almost taken over the music industry as artiste find no big deal in stealing other peoples intellectual property.

Some say it is unavoidable since there are only so many notes on a piano and chord shapes on a guitar.

But others will swear blind that using a riff, melody, or tone of another artist’s song is stealing, ripping, robbing and thieving and is unequivocally wrong.

We take a look at these big name artists whose names of have been dragged through the dirt after they were accused of stealing music.

The singer shared his grievances on his Instagram page, accusing big artistes of not helping the growth process of upcoming artistes.

Accompanying his lengthy caption, Henry Knight played both songs side by side to expose Mr P’s alleged attempt at copying his hook (chorus).

However, Mr P never publicly spoke of the matter. It is assued that they have privately settled the issue.

Wizkid

Even before this claim surfaced, Wizkid has for a while been hit with all sort of song theft accusations, which got most people wondering if the 'Pakurumo' crooner, was not smart enough to write himself some hit song.

Dammy Krane, an artiste signed unto Tuface's Hypertek records, took to social media to vent. From stealing materials to actually stealing the song Babanla, Wizkid, made our list of artistes who are kings of plagiarism.

The family members of a man who reportedly killed the daughter of a former deputy governor for money ritual have deserted their home.
Late Khadijat Oluboyo

Barely 24 hours after the suspected killer of the daughter of the former deputy governor of Ondo State, Adeyemi Alao was paraded by Police, his family members have vacated their residence.

Adeyemi was paraded by the police in the state for alleged ritual killing of his fiancée of eight years Khadijat and burying her in inside his room.

Khadijat was a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, before her murder.

The father of the suspect Alhaji Alani Alao reportedly moved out of the house with his family members late Wednesday to an unknown destination.

Vanguard gathered that this was sequel to the parade of their son by the state Police command. The main building where the father of the suspect resided and the boys-quarters where the suspect and three other tenants lived were desolate yesterday.

The doors and windows to the two building were shut while the father Mercedes Benz with Osun State registration number had been removed from the frontage of his house.

A neighbour told Vanguard that many people trooped to the house located at the new Oke Aro extension that same Wednesday their son was paraded by the Police and yesterday after they saw the suspect on the television stations and heard of his atrocities on Radio.

“They just left the house because of the shame the incident had brought to the family,” the neighbour added, saying they did not confide in anybody before leaving, but that he just noticed that the father and members of family drove out of the house late on Wednesday and had not returned yesterday.

He said: “Not one soul slept in the two buildings overnight and there is no guarantee that anyone will sleep there for some time.

“It is clear that they have relocated because of the shame and the name calling that the incident would attract to them. It’s really unfortunate.”

Recall that the mother of the suspect simply referred to as Alhaja, the three tenants in the boys quarters and some landlords had before now gone into hiding for fear of arrest by security operatives investigating the murder case.

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, Alhaji Lasisis Oluboyo said due to his religion, he would not seek vengeance against his daughter’s alleged killer in the law court.

He said this when a delegation of the state government led by the deputy governor Agboola Ajayi and Information Commissioner, Yemi Olowolabi, visited him.

Alhaji Lasisi who described her daughter’s death as devastating thanked the government for showing the family strong support and care despite their different political affiliation.

The state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, earlier commiserated with the family of Lasisi over the gruesome murder of their daughter.

Akeredolu who urged the bereaved family as believers of Allah to submit to the will of God who gives and takes life prayed that Allah will comfort the family over the loss and spread his wing of protection over all others she left behind.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye lauded the security operatives for being proactive in apprehending the suspect allegedly behind the death of Khadijat.

The governor lauded the security operatives for being proactive in apprehending the suspected killer and urged them to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served in the matter.

Akeredolu, however, advised youths, especially students, to face their studies and to always shun acts that are capable of jeopardising their future.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of using the Abacha loot in funding the electioneering campaign of his APC colleague, Fayemi in Ekiti.

Late Sani Abacha
The governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, has accused the Federal Government of moving part of the $321m recovered from the late Abacha family to Ekiti for Saturday’s governorship election.
Olusola, who is the incumbent deputy governor, said about $50m of the recovered loot was moved from Abuja in a chartered flight through Akure Airport to Ekiti in two bullion vans to support the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi.
The Director, Media and Publicity of Kolapo Olusola Campaign Organisation, Lere Olayinka, raised this alarm at a press briefing in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.
He said, “Last week Saturday, two bullion vehicles were moved to the Akure Airport to evacuate cash brought from Abuja by a chartered flight.

“The flight landed when it was raining and all staff members of the airport were barred from going near the aircraft while the cash was evacuated into the two bullion vehicles.

“After offloading the huge cash, the bullion van first moved to the Ondo State Government House in Akure from where they left for Isan Ekiti, the hometown of the APC governorship candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi.”
Olusola claimed that preliminary findings indicated that N2.5bn cash was transferred by the Kebbi State Government to an account in UBA, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.
“It was withdrawn immediately and moved with a private jet to Akure. Also, apart from the N2.5bn, another $50m (about N18bn) was taken from the $321m recovered from the late Abacha family.
“Our question is, how can a government that claimed to be fighting corruption released billions of naira from the public coffers for the governorship election of a single state? Where is their fight against corruption?”
Olusola called on Nigerians to note this wanton looting of public fund by the APC government to fund the election of its members.
“We must tell Fayemi and his APC that the conscience of the people of Ekiti cannot be purchased and we call on the people of Ekiti to resist the planned use of the stolen fund to buy their votes of Saturday,” he added.
Olusola also called the attention of the public to alleged intimidation and harassment of PDP members by men of the Department of State Services and policemen.
But reacting, the Director, Media and Publicity, Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, described the allegation as coming from the pit of hell.
He said, “Discerning minds will note the lies contained in the story by a single logic that it took Eleka (Olusola) and Olayinka a whole week after the leak of funds movement before they alerted Nigerians about a purported money cargo being offloaded in Akure for Fayemi’s election in Ekiti.
“By this lie from the pit of hell, we know that the PDP is trying to paint a picture that it is a comrade-in-crime with APC after Fayose’s 2014 poll fraud funded with the loot from the office of the National Security Adviser.”

On Tuesday, the CBN said it injected the sum of $210m into the interbank foreign exchange market to meet customers’ requests in various segments of the market.

The apex bank said it offered $100m to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, while the Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises segment got the sum of $55m.

It said customers needing forex for invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance, among others, were also allocated the sum of $55m.

The naira is expected to be stable next week, which is driven by exporters selling dollars on the interbank currency market, Reuters quoted traders as saying.

The naira has been trading between 362 and 363 per dollar for a while as customers shy away from trading the currency weaker. Traders say dollar liquidity improved this week with lenders selling export proceeds to customers.

On the official interbank market, the naira is quoted at around 305 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, analysts at FSDH Merchant Bank have noted that the external sector of the Nigerian economy improved further in the first quarter of 2018 as it recorded the best trade performance in the last nine quarters.

They stated in their latest monthly financial and economic report that the figures for Q1 2018, as published by the National Bureau of Statistics, revealed a noticeable improvement in the major indicators of the Nigerian foreign trade data.

The analysts said, “These Q1 2018 figures are broadly consistent with the 2018 forecast that FSDH Research published earlier this year in our Economic and Financial Market Reports for the period of 2018 to 2022. The strong foreign trade should help to sustain stability in the foreign exchange market.

“Our analysis shows that the total value of merchandise trade increased by 19.74 per cent to N7.21tn in Q1 2018 from N6.02tn in Q4 2017 and an increase of 34.83 per cent from N5.34tn in Q1 2017.

"Exports, at N4.7tn, accounted for 65 per cent of the total trade while imports, at N2.5tn, accounted for 35 per cent. Trade balance (the difference between exports and imports) increased by 22 per cent to N2.2tn in Q1 2018 from N1.8tn in Q4 2017.”
