The police have arrested over At least 100 s3x workers in Nairobi’s central business district on Thursday, August 19, after traders lamented that they were distracting and making customers uncomfortable.

According to The Standard, the businessmen and women said the sex workers were operating in broad daylight near their shops, consequently distracting their would-be customers.

Police officers attached to Central post said the round-up was conducted by them and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) officers after numerous complaints were filed by traders in the CBD.

“The traders filed a number of complaints against the group, particularly sex workers whom they claimed were operating near their stalls
,” a senior Central Police Station officer told The Standard.

The senior cop said Covid-19 crisis and the 10pm-4am curfew might have pushed sex workers to the streets during the day.

"Some of the women openly entice men walking on the streets. Several victims have complained of sexual harassment by a section of the sex workers, who pull them to corridors for negotiation.”

A section of traders in Nairobi vowed to stop remitting taxes to the county government if action won’t be taken against the sex workers. The business community even wrote a protest letter to that effect.

"The traders said the sex workers were using foul language near their shops, making their customers uncomfortable. The most affected businessmen and women are those operating on Duruma Road, and its neighbouring streets
.” Police said

Central Day Nursery School on Ngariama Road had written a letter to the NMS and police complaining of sex workers’ presence outside the institution’s gate. The management said the twilight girls had littered the entrance to the school with cigarette sticks, miraa leaves and stem, among other unwanted matter.

Another facility that has filed complaints about the sex workers, is the House of Judah Church on Ndumberi Road.

"The sex workers even show up outside the church on Sundays, when congregants are entering or leaving the worship centre,
” said a member of House of Judah Church.

Charles Rubia Road is the other area flocked by sex workers during daytime. According to the complainants, the women start their business as early as 7am.

NMS officer, William Kangogo, who is in charge of the operation to remove sex workers from the CBD and rid the town of beggars and muggers, said the exercise will last one month, and would be conducted randomly thereafter.

"The directive was issued by the National Government,” he said, adding that some of the people posing as beggars are foreigners who are in the country illegally. We are investigating who is housing the foreigners because we understand that some of the beggars, mostly those living with disabilities, are usually taken to Huruma every evening,” added Kangogo

Carly Buckingham-Smith

A 38-year-old woman has been has been handed a 6 months sentence for  launching a hate campaign against herself, causing police to waste hundreds of hours after they thought she was targeted.

Carly Buckingham-Smith, sent herself abusive texts and graffitied her own house. She then told police she was being targeted by "Asian males" when in fact she’d made the whole thing up.

She used her own phone to send threatening messages like: "I am going to tie you up and slit your throat and watch you bleed."

In another, a threat was made to "put petrol through her letterbox and set it alight".

She even scrawled offensive graffiti all over her own house.

The cleaner, from Eastleigh, Hampshire, made 11 witness statements to police concerning the texts, claiming she was being harassed.

So, police fitted alarms and cameras at her home in an effort to catch those she claimed were harassing her.

But it was later discovered she had been lying.

She was charged with perverting the course of justice.

A jury at Southampton Crown Court found her guilty and she’s now been jailed for six months.

The court heard how Buckingham-Smith initially made a complaint against an Uber driver, which was dismissed by police.

She then claimed she was being harassed and was facing "intimidating behaviour" linked to the driver.

But police soon established she was making "false complaints and was attention-seeking".

When interviewed about her "fictitious reports" of arson attacks and men banging on her door in the night, she made no comment.

Judge Nicholas Rowland called her campaign "nasty" and added that a "great deal" of police time had been wasted.

He said police spent 69 hours investigating Buckingham-Smith’s "fabricated and spurious allegations" and a further 500 hours surrounding her own criminal case.

Obasanjo said this after a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo said Secondus had not visited him because of partisan politics but because he was concerned about the situation of the nation.

“You have not visited me because of partisan politics, but you have visited me as a person who is concerned about where Nigeria is and where Nigeria may be descending into if the right action is not taken.

“And I couldn’t agree with you more, every right-thinking Nigerian and every lover of Nigeria will agree that Nigeria is not what it should be today unless there is something else wrong with them.

“The situation is bad, very bad, but the situation is not irredeemable. That is where the hope lies. The situation is very bad, but it is not hopelessly irredeemable. Therefore we need all hands on deck. Let’s put partisan politics apart and think of what we can do to get Nigeria to where it is supposed to be and move Nigeria forward,”
 Obasanjo said.

Tito Okoye explains that Abba Kyari has committed not less than seven fatal mistakes that are creating PR and credibility nightmares for him.

Abba Kyari

Hushpuppi and Abba Kyari

There is no doubt at all that the most topical issue in the country today is the bombshell Hushpuppi-related US court order that agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have come to Nigeria to execute against Abba Kyari. He is Nigeria’s most decorated super cop, Deputy Commissioner of Police, and until recently commander of the elite Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force.

Saying that a man like Abba Kyari, with his stellar achievements and rapid promotions, must have stepped on the toes of many of his colleagues and superior officers and has aroused envy and wrath in the process, is to make an understatement. But the aura and mystique of invincibility and impregnable network of influencers and operators of power he masterfully cobbled together kept potential predators at bay. That was until the FBI agents showed up at our doorsteps for him. Truth is that Abba Kyari has committed not less than seven fatal mistakes that are creating PR and credibility nightmares for him, the Police High Command, and the Presidency.

Mistake No. 1

Abba Kyari lived a very lavish lifestyle that was totally out of sync with his position and legitimate means. Worse still, he didn’t care who knew it, hence he kept uploading photos of trappings of his wealth on his Instagram and Twitter walls. The populace of any country in the world abhor seeing – or even hearing stories of – their cops imitating the lifestyles of fraudulent and ostentatious politicians and criminals.

Mistake No. 2

Abba Kyari not only mindlessly flaunted his wealth in the public square, but also allowed – if not encouraged – his younger brother to follow suit.

Mistake No. 3

When the story first broke, Kyari tried to pooh-pooh it by mocking and taunting the FBI and the Police High Command: “Hahahaha,” he tweeted, “indicted where, How? On social media, abi…good luck to dem bad belle people waiting to see us arrested.” Although the tweets were eventually deleted, they had incensed the FBI agents and fanned growing anger and consternation among the top echelons of the NPF.

Mistake No. 4

Even as he was talking too much too soon, much of what Kyari was averring in his defence was unconvincing and ludicrous. For example, he was quick to counter that the only connection between him and Hushpuppi was a request by the latter asking him to make copies of his (Kyari’s) fashionable wears, and that the relationship ended when he paid the designer the sum of N300,000 Hushpuppi had provided as payment for the finished products. Wondered Kyari: “Many people who admire our clothes are connected to the designer, so that is an offence now?”

Mistake No. 5

Indiscretion as well as lamentable lack of perspicacity evidenced in attending the burial ceremony of Obi Cubana’s mother and having photos of his active involvement going viral on social media platforms.

Mistake No. 6

Allegedly threatening to bring others down with him if approval is given for him to be extradited to the USA, including retired and serving senior police officers and prominent members of the public. Some names have already gone viral on social media platforms.

Mistake No. 7

Capitalising on long-existing fault lines to goad the Police Service Commission  and the PHC into another do-or-die battle for supremacy on policy matters. The PSC has since disclosed that it would conduct its own “separate and independent” investigation after receiving the IGP’s investigative report. Isn’t this simply a ruse to buy time for whatever reasons?

Epilogue:

Having seemingly covered all loose ends in Nigeria, Kyari understandably crowed about his invincibility. But the highly intelligent celebrity crime-buster failed to take the foibles of Hushpuppi into account. The global Internet fraudster had apparently chosen to keep details of their business transactions apparently as a trophy with the likely intention of bragging to friends about how successful he has been in his line of work.

When silence mattered most, Kyari kept making unforced errors by opening his mouth widely. “Blessed be the man,” chimed George Elliot (pen name of female English novelist Marian Evans), “who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving in words evidence of the fact.”

Bisi Alimi, a Nigerian gay rights activist and HIV/LGBT advocate has opened up about his plans of opening a gay club in Lagos, Nigeria.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Nigeria face legal and social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. The country does not allow or recognise LGBT rights.

There is no legal protection against discrimination in Nigeria—a largely conservative country of more than 200 million people, split between a mainly Muslim north and a largely Christian south.

Bisi Alimi has now stated that he dreams of owning a gay club in Mushin, a ”rough” community in Lagos state.

University of Jos

No less than three students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have been feared killed and many missing following the escalation of Saturday attacks on commuters at Rukuba road in Jos, Plateau state, according to SaharaReporters.

It was learnt that some students are currently receiving treatments in various hospitals following injuries they sustained during attacks on them.

Some students of the institution have called on the Nigerian government, Plateau State, and the Management of the university to urgently send food to them at their hostels following the 24-hour curfew declared in the state.

It would be recalled that the governor of the state, Simon Lalong on August 15, declared a 24-hour curfew in the Jos North Local Government Area of the state following the massacre of about 22 travellers on Saturday by hoodlums.

The 24- hour curfew came on the heels of the earlier dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on three local government areas in the state, Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North, due to the security threats and tension witnessed by residents in some parts of the state.

“Due to the ongoing crises in Jos, Plateau State, for the past few weeks and the killing of some travellers on Saturday, the government imposed curfew to help maintain law and order,”
one of the students told SaharaReporters.

“But the situation keeps escalating with killings and tensions all over. But the issue at stake now involves the students of University of Jos. The environment the school is situated is at a danger zone and some students have been killed while some are missing.

“Some states have provided security and buses to help evacuate their indigenes while some organisations and concerned citizens have provided buses to help bring out the students to town where it is a bit safe.

“More needs to be done to help safeguard the lives of innocent students. Their examinations were suspended by school management due to the ongoing crises and most of them in the hostels are out of food and no means to go out provide for themselves due to situation and environment the school is situated,”
 he added.
