It has been reported that three biological children and seven family members of Saidu Yarkufoji, a member of Zamfara State House of Assembly, representing Bakura state constituency, have died in an auto crash.

The Zamfara command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the tragic incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.

Nasiru Ahmed, spokesman of the command, said the crash was caused by a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Golf car and a Coca-Cola truck.

The accident occurred along Sokoto-Gusau road on Sunday.

According to NAN, other family members of the lawmaker who died in the accident were four of his grandchildren, his two sisters and his driver.

“Out of the 10 persons, who died in the car conveying 12 passengers, nine are female.

“The other two persons who sustained various degrees of injuries are still receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Special Hospital, Gusau.

“Motorists are advised to avoid night journey and over speeding as much as possible to reduce crashes across the state,” he said.

A man has told a shocking story, alleging that some police officers chased his son to death in a Lagos community.
Chief Obiekwe holding up the photo of his dead son

Chief Nnaemeka Obiekwe, the Nwachinyere of Lagos High  has relieved how policemen chased his 27-year-old son, Chigozie Promise to death.

According to a report by The Nation, the incident occurred on April 11 when Chigozie was going to work.

The distraught father of five said his son took a bike from Oshodi that fateful morning. Along the way, some policemen started chasing Okada riders and the bike man that carried him turned back driving against traffic back to Oshodi.

They were hit by a speeding Tipper; Chigozie fell down and the tipper crushed him.

High Chief Obiekwe, who is the Managing Director of Nna Motors Organisation, said the plans of his son to further his study abroad were truncated.

He said: “My son just died like that. He was working at Guinness Breweries in Ogba. He was going to work. The boy is a graduate. He’s a good boy. He finished from Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). He had Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hospitality. It’s a painful departure because he’s my first son. It pains me that things are going the other way round in this country.”

He urged the government to train security agencies on how to arrest offender’s without leading to death.

“Chasing Okada riders on the road is not in tandem with modern way of securing the state. It happens in many places especially all these Task Force men chasing Okada riders in order to impound their motorcycles. They should realise that people are struggling to make a living.  There is poverty and hunger in the land. People want to survive.

“They can fashion way out if they don’t want Okada on the road again. Let them withdraw their particulars or ban them totally. That will be better than to be chasing Okada on the motion or rounding them up dangerously.

“My own son has died. Who knows who the next victim could be? The media should help to educate the police on how things are done in advanced countries.”

He lamented that his hope on the late Chigozie has been dashed.

“He was a humble person. He is my hope. I’m looking forward that he would take care of me at old age, but see what our policemen done to me. It’s a very painful situation. He wanted to further his education overseas. I don’t even know what to say more. He’s minus one from the people that have great prospects for Nigeria in the future. He’s minus one in whatever I will be in the future. He’s minus one in whatever my family will be in the future,” he said.

Nigerians are very innovative despite the stifling conditions that mitigate against success and individual progress in the country.

Augustine Otuokwa Ogar working on his invention

The 32-year-old man identified as Augustine Otuokwa Ogar, who became an online sensation after constructing a 200 Mega Watts mini Hydroelectric power plant that generates electricity for the plant site and its surrounding early this year, is back again with another cool invention.

The graduate of Electronic and Computer Technology, University of Calabar (UNICAL), who comes from Wula village, Eastern Boki in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, has constructed a Hydroelectric power machine that uses a bucket of water to run using locally sourced materials.

The talented man explained his research on Hydroelectricity to Calabar Reporters as he revealed that the system generate up to 20 watts (20W) of power that powers the injector pump and some phones and it operates when the top tank is filled with a bucket of water.

He said, “The device has two wooden tank (the up and down tank) for collection of water, a pen stock to control water out of the upper tank to the turbine, the turbine that convert the potential energy of water into mechanical energy that rotate the alternator through the pulley system, the alternator that generates power and lastly a riding machine injector pump motor which pump back water from the down tank to the upper tank and the process continues”.

Explaining how it works, Ogar said, “A bucket of water if emptied in the tank and water is allowed to flow and hit, turn the turbine which rotate the alternator, then electricity is generated which then energizes a small pumping machine that pump back the water into the first tank then process continues. The system carries two tanks, up and down tank. I decided not to show everything here for technical reasons

“It operates without a repulsive force or zero back electromotive force (emf). I invented it to be used for practical demonstration on hydroelectricity. It generates up to 20 watt during operation but I stepped down the power to power one blinking LED for demonstration and technical reasons.

“The system generate up to 20 watt of power that Powers the injector pump and some phones and it operates when the top tank is filled with a bucket of water and it’s a continues system. Although, not every part of the system is shown here for technical reasons because it’s going to be a huge technology in the nearest future.

“It shouldn’t be a surprise to any one that water contains both potential and kinetic energy and the law energy that it can be converted from one form to the other. On like mechanical generators, this device has two major sections also, the turbine that does the conversion of the potential energy of the River into motion serves as the mechanical part of the device while the alternator which convert this mechanical energy into electricity, is the electrical part of the device.

“The river that carries both the kinetic and potential energy is the fuel or the power house of the device. This is an era of renewable energy, can we join hands together to really developed this local innovation to solve the problem of power outage in Rural and Urban areas? And also to combat the challenges of global warming? What about training of youths on hydroelectricity by establishing renewable energy? Building training centers across the country and also creating job opportunities. God bless Nigeria”, Ogar concluded.

Scene of the bank robbery

Five staff of one of the commercial banks recently attacked by deadly armed robbers in Offa, Kwara State, have reportedly been sacked by the management of bank for releasing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of the robbery to the public.

According to a report by TheCable, a reliable source in the bank said the management viewed the release of the footage without official approval as “gross indiscipline,” which was capable of affecting the security and image of the bank.

A video clip of the incident had gone viral shortly after the armed robbers had on Thursday, April 5, invaded five banks in Offa, Kwara State, killing scores of residents, including policemen, bank workers and passersby, revealed how the robbers entered one of the banks.

It was gathered that the management of the bank was surprised at how the video got into public space and sacked five of its workers last Friday.

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said the Nigeria Police Force would also deal with anyone linked to the robbery.

Okesanmi spoke in response to reports that the Divisional Crime Officer and the Divisional Police Officer of the Offa Police Station allegedly failed to take necessary actions before the robbers attacked.

It was also said that the robbers only collected the phones of the DPO and the DCO and allowed them to escape. Okasanmi said both civilians and uniformed men linked to the incident would not go scot-free.

While saying that investigation was ongoing, he noted that the police were determined to get to the root of “persistent robberies” in Offa.

“Whether civilian or police, whoever is found culpable would be dealt with accordingly,” he added

Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger
Sir Alex Ferguson has paid a touching tribute to departing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
The legendary former Manchester United boss had a famously fiery relationship with Frenchman during their days as managerial rivals.
But Ferguson has nothing but admiration for Wenger, saying he was "proud to have been a rival, a colleague and a friend to such a great man."
Arsenal announced on Friday morning that Wenger will leave the club at the end of the season after 22 years in charge.
"I am really happy for Arsene Wenger," said Ferguson. "I have great respect for him and for the job he has done at Arsenal.
"It is great testament to his talent, professionalism and determination that has been able to dedicate 22 years of his life to a job that he loves.
"In an era where football managers sometimes only last one or two seasons, it shows what an achievement it is to serve that length of time at a club the size of Arsenal.
"I am pleased that he has announced he is leaving at this stage of the season, as he can now have the send-off that he truly deserves.
"He is, without doubt, one of the greatest Premier League managers and I am proud to have been a rival, a colleague and a friend to such a great man."

A court in Lagos has rejected a suit by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to freeze $5.3 billion belonging to Patience Jonathan.
Patience Jonathan

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has struck out a suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), freezing the sum of $5.3 billion. The money is domiciled in a bank account and linked to the wife of the former President, Mrs Patience Jonathan and six others.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun struck out the suit at the instance of the EFCC who filed an application to discontinue same.

Last week Friday, Justice Olatoregun had struck out the Commission’s ex-parte application for the seizure of certain funds belonging to Mrs Jonathan after holding that the issue was already a subject of litigation before two other judges, Justice Murtala-Nyako and Justice John Tsoho, both of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The judge also criticised the EFCC for engaging in forum shopping by filing multiple suits on the seizure of the funds, one with a total of $8,435,788.84 and another for N7.35billion.

With the court striking out the cases and a similar discontinuance application filed by the EFCC before Justice Nyako in Abuja, the EFCC will now file an application for the forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government.

The court presided by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, had sometime in December 2016, while granting EFCC’s ex-parte application ordered that the account be frozen pending the conclusion of investigation on the monies.

The judge had also ordered the EFCC to file an undertaking as to damages if it turned out that the order was erroneously granted.

In urging the court to temporarily freeze the account, the EFCC through one of its investigators, Abdulahi Tukura, in an affidavit, told the court that Mrs Patience Jonathan used different companies and individuals to acquire the money.

The investigator also said that Mrs Jonathan’s money in a bank account with a current balance of $5,842,316.66 billion, is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Another individual, Esther Oba who is said to be at large is also said to be in possession of $429,381.87 million said to belong to Mrs Jonathan.

At the hearing of the matter on Thursday, a lawyer to one of the respondents, Ige Asemudara, told the court that he was duly informed by the EFCC’s lawyer, Mohammed Idris, who was equally in court, that, the anti-graft agency had signified its intention to discontinue the suit, by filing a notice of discontinuance.

Asemudara, therefore, urged the court to strike out the suit.

Asemudara’s application was granted, and Justice Olatoregun consequently struck out the suit.

Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor has penned down a piece on the political climate of Lagos State which is the commercial capital of Nigeria.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode (middle)

His predecessor, Babatunde Fashola had set a mark in urban renewal that few expected him to match. However, after nearly three years as governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode seems to have set new heights in governance that few expected little challenge to a second term. Hence the surprise at the preemptive move by his associates to tackle the opposition.

The men and women who gathered last Sunday at a discreet Ikeja GRA residence of a top Lagos politician tried much to dismiss insinuations of a panic. There should not be in a panic given that the men comprised a significant proportion of the elected political office holders in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC from Lagos State. Local government chairmen, members of the House of Assembly, and a sprinkling of federal legislators were present that afternoon. Also present were heads of extra-ministerial agencies of the state government.

It was as such not surprising that men of the Rapid Response Squad patrolled around the street giving security cover to the gathering. It was supposed to be an interactive session with some selected newsmen. It eventually turned into a press conference. Addressing the about ten newsmen were scores of politicians led by former three-time chairman of Bariga Council and presently special adviser to the governor on community relations and communications, Hon. Omoyele Sulaimon.

They were gathered for the formal unveiling of the Ambode Mandate Support Group, AMSG which they claimed was formed by associates of the governor to champion his bid for a second term. So, given the belief that Lagos goes the way its political leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu goes and the impression of cordiality between the governor and Tinubu, so why the bother for a support group? Sulaimon tried to fend it as the normal politicking associated with an election.

However, beneath the assumption and confidence radiated by the group is the fact of a looming political battle for control of the country’s richest state. Though Ambode may have no problems with Tinubu and even the mainstream of the party in the state which is firmly in Tinubu’s grip, there is fear in high quarters of what dissidents within the party could do.

Though he has been almost quiet in the political affairs of the state, the impression that the immediate past governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola could spring a surprise Vanguard learned is seriously bothering leading stakeholders. Indeed the treatment given to the former governor at the birthday colloquium of Tinubu at Eko Hotel and Suites last month was interpreted as an indication of the division within the party. Many had noted that even though Fashola instituted the colloquium as governor of the state that he was completely left out of the programme that day and not recognised at all. The perceived animosity flows from the not too hidden secret that Fashola had initially supported a former commissioner in his cabinet, the urbane Supo Sasore, SAN before the APC primaries as his successor.

Sasore, however, bowed down to the superior political power of Tinubu who singlehandedly nurtured Ambode. Though Fashola campaigned vigorously for Ambode after he emerged as the APC candidate, the bad blood apparently had been spilled, and the camp of Ambode seemed not to have forgiven the fact that he was not backed from the beginning by his predecessor. The fear of the Ambode group is not so much in Fashola, but in what he could do in collaboration with other political dissidents. The most notable of such potential collaborators with Fashola is Muiz Banire; the former law teacher turned hardened politician and incumbent national legal adviser of the APC.

While the bitterness with Fashola and Sasore has been coldly emitted, the bitterness with Banire has been poured out very violently. When late last year, the Lagos State Government issued an eviction notice on a property occupied by Banire’s mother at  24A, Remi Fani Kayode Street, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos some stakeholders were quick to associate it with the political bitterness between Banire and the mainstream of the party in Lagos. Even more, a close associate of Banire’s the former deputy speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Funmi Tejuosho while on official duty as a member of the House was evacuated from her residence. She claimed she had bought the residence as part of the monetisation policy of the previous government, but state authorities debunked the claim with the assertion that she had not made complete payment for the building the government insisted was by right the official residence of the deputy speaker of the State House of Assembly.

Willy-nilly, the eviction notice on Mama Banire and the eviction of Mrs. Tejuosho only seemed to give the impression of an internal battle which is now beginning to spill out. Banire had ahead of the last local government elections in the state taken opposition to the conduct of the internal primaries with his open questions against the party leadership in the state. In response, Banire’s ward in Mushin Local Government Area of the state expelled him from the party, a decision that was upheld by both the local government area executive and the state local government executive. The decision was, however, rejected by the National Working Committee, NWC of the party which affirmed that Banire as a national officer of the party could not be sanctioned by subordinate authorities.

It is as such not idle talk that the opposition of the Lagos State executive of the party to the alleged tenure extension plot for the National Working Committee is also partly influenced by the abhorrence for Banire. While it is true that Tinubu almost singlehandedly installed Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as national chairman, it is also true that he also installed Banire as national legal adviser. Banire had been regarded as one of the powerful political scions of the Lagos political leader. As Tinubu battled to take dominance of the state, Banire was one of the eggheads who rose on the ladder of Asiwaju Tinubu and increasingly became the local lord over Mushin.

Sources said that the Banire was promoted and used to neutralise the political influence of former Senator Ganiyu Solomon who increasingly lost influence as Banire rose under the aegis of Tinubu. It is now claimed that Solomon is again gaining the ascendancy as Banire has lately come under political attacks from the mainstream of the party in Lagos. It is against this background that sources talk of a possible convergence of forces between Banire and Fashola to tackle the Ambode forces on the ground. Banire is believed to have had governorship aspirations. The intentions of Sasore are presently not known despite continuing insinuations.

To the advantage of the Banire/Fashola camp is the fact that they hold sway at the national level and hence, could influence the nomination of officers who would conduct the forthcoming congresses. However, can the two of them dare take on Tinubu in his political fiefdom? That is an issue that is bound to provoke a political crisis that no one can predict as it is bound to echo beyond the state.

Five State Music superstar singer, KCee has threatened to jump off the popular Third mainland bridge in Lagos over President Buhari's comment on Nigerian youths.

KCee at the 3rd mainland bridge

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, popularly known as KCee has reacted to President Buhari's speech at the commonwealth where he described the Nigerian youths as be 'being Lazy'.

In a video which was posted online and is making the rounds on social media, KCee who currently has a record deal with Five Star Music, was seen as he parked his gold coloured SUV on 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos and went on a one minute rant of how unacceptable President Buhari's comment is.

In a continued show of his disapproval of the President's comment, KCee then attempted (as a joke) to jump off the bridge, while lamenting how the Nigerian youth has always found a way to make it in their various fields and professions without any help from the government.

A Boko Haram terrorists has been shot dead during a gun battle with Nigerian soldiers in Borno state.

The Boko Haram terrorists killed by soldiers

Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in a blocking operation to canalize and deny Boko Haram insurgents freedom of action and escape from ongoing onslaught in the Sambisa region have killed one Boko Haram insurgent yesterday Thursday 19 April 2018 at the Ngala bridge in Gamboru Ngala area of Borno State.

Troops killed the insurgent and wounded several others at about 6.30 pm in an encounter , with elements of the insurgent group who were fleeing in two Gun trucks through Ngala road. The gallant troops engaged the insurgents, destroying one of the Gun trucks and recovering an Anti Aircraft Gun, 2 AK 47 rifles and 2 Magazines abandoned by the fleeing insurgents under the superior fire power of the troops.

In another operation, troops on patrol along Jebra - Firgi road at about 1. 30 pm yesterday averted a devastating plot by Boko Haram terrorists to attack troops and other unsuspecting road users with multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) concealed under foliage along the road.

The troops uncovered three primed IEDs concealed under shrubs along the road shoulder and connected to a long detonating cable dragged into the bush towards the Sambisa axis. The IEDs have been safely detonated by Operation Lafiya Dole Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

Vigilant troops have also arrested one Madaki Tumba aka Kalifa, a suspected Boko Haram terrorist at a location ahead of Limankara .The suspect was nabbed yesterday at about 6.14 pm by troops on patrol while in possession of one M16 rifle and a magazine loaded with 2 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition. He is currently undergoing preliminary investigation.

The ongoing operations against Boko Haram terrorists, conducted by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole simultaneously in the Sambisa region and the Lake Chad Islands is undoubtedly strangulating the insurgent group, hence its resort to attacking soft targets with suicide bombers and other forms of IEDs in a desperate bid to remain relevant.

Members of the public are therefore please urged to be cautious and vigilant as they go about their daily activities in their communities and business places. They are also enjoined to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to security agencies.

Please disseminate this information to the general public through your news medium.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Under Wenger Arsenal won the Premier League title in 1998, 2002, and 2004 and clinched seven FA Cups.

However, European glory has eluded the Gunners. Arsenal was runner-up in the UEFA Cup in 2000 and beaten finalist in the Champions League final in 2006.

It failed to qualify for this season's elite European competition and hasn't reached the Champions League quarterfinals since 2010.

Arsenal is currently sixth in the Premier League.

Wenger, born in Strasbourg, began his career as a player in France, followed by managerial stints with AS Nancy, AS Monaco and Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan before joining Arsenal.
