A Nigerian returnee from Libya has revealed that many girls are forced to sleep with men to be able to get loaves of bread.
Esther and Okafor

Agbone Esther, a 22-year-old woman, who hails from Efurrun in Warri, Delta State, has revealed how Nigerian girls are eking out their three square meals in Libya.

According to a report by New Telegraph, the returnee, who possesses an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication from the Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, regretted that she joined the trip, after paying over N200,000 to an anchor-man in an unscrupulous manner on June 22, last year.

She was among the first batch of 5,499 Nigerian youths, out of which 78 are indigenes of Delta State, that were rescued by the high-powered delegation of the Federal Government led by the Minister of Internal Affairs, under the auspices of the European Union (EU) in conjunction with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in January, this year.

Esther lamented how they were being fed with addictive foods inside the cell to make them sleep off and forgot about their meals.

Esther, who narrated how they travelled by land from Kano to Niger, through Agades before they got to Libya, confirmed in Asaba yesterday that prostitution was the order of the day among Nigerian girls.

She said: “From the point of departure in Nigeria to the landing point in Libya, it was prostitution all the way. I have no intention of staying in Libya, but my plan to pass through Libya failed. A lot of our girls go into prostitution when they are hungry. To get a loaf of ‘Umzr’ bread to assuage their hunger, our girls give s*x to Libyan men at random. So, many get pregnant through unwarranted s*x.”

Her views were corroborated by another returnee, Okafor Abrahim, who hails from Umunede in Ika North East, Delta State, but said he embarked on the journey to Libya in November 2016, having paid over N150,000 to a middleman.

Former Chelsea defender and legend, John Terry has left Aston Villa in his bid to seek a better challenge next season.

John Terry

Ex-England International, John Terry has announced his departure from Aston Villa after just one season following a disappointing campaign where they failed to gain promotion from the Championship league.

“Today I part ways with Aston Villa Football Club. I’m very proud to have had the opportunity to play and captain this great and huge club,” he said yesterday in a statement on Instagram page.

It would be recalled that last year Villa moved to snap up Terry on a free transfer following his trophy-laden career at Chelsea, where five Premier League titles, and winners’ medals in the Champions League and Europa League even though he did not play in either final were among his list of achievements.

Despite his age and being in the twilight of his career, former England skipper Terry made a telling contribution at Villa and captained them as they finished fourth in the regular season, securing a spot in the playoffs.

It had been reported that a one-year extension was to be handed to the centre-back if Villa managed to return to the Premier League, but a 1-0 defeat to Fulham in the play-off final ended those plans.

A statement from club owner Tony Xia earlier on Wednesday hinted at imminent changes, as he told supporters Villa “will face severe FFP [Financial Fair Play] challenges next season”.

And it will come as a surprise to few that Terry, whose contract was reportedly worth £80,000 per week, is the first to move on.

According to a report by Punch Metro, pandemonium broke out on Wednesday in the Ibeshe, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, after a mob, made up of motorcycle riders, attacked the Ibeshe Police Station with stones, bottles and attempted to burn it down.

Punch Metro reports that the mob was prevented from carrying out the act by shots fired by policemen attached to the station, who also called for reinforcement from surrounding divisions.

After beating a retreat, it was gathered that the crowd set ablaze a patrol vehicle in the area and attacked policemen in sight.

It was learnt that a motorcycle rider, identified as Paul, aka Baba Ezine, had died in the early hours of Wednesday after an accident which residents claimed was caused by the police.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Ebonyi State indigene had attempted to evade a police checkpoint when he had the accident.

She said, “The man was taking a passenger somewhere on Tuesday when he ran into the police checkpoint. He tried to evade the policemen, but crashed into a gutter. People said the policemen chased him into the gutter.

“After the accident, the police operatives, instead of taking him to a hospital, left him in the gutter. They, however, seized his motorcycle, which they took to their station.

“The man’s friends later took him to a hospital where he died this morning (Wednesday). The man’s kinsmen and colleagues from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, mobilised and took his corpse to the palace of the Baale of Owode, who urged them to be calm and promised to do something.

“From the palace, they took his remains to the police station. The police fired shots into the air to scare them away. That was when they found a police van which they burnt.”

Another resident said the deceased, who was in his 40s, had recently lost his wife and mother.

He said, “Paul’s wife died in September 2017, while his mother, who came from the village to take care of their five children, died in February 2018. Since then, he lived alone with the children in the Owode Labake area.”

A community leader, who did not want to be identified, lamented that the police had been arresting innocent residents on the street in a bid to apprehend those behind the burning of the police vehicle.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, in a statement on Wednesday, said the attack on the station was unwarranted.

He said the police authorities would ensure that those behind the arson were punished.

He said, “The Lagos State Police Command notes with regret the unfortunate burning of a police patrol van stationed at a black spot in Ibeshe, in the Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, by irate motorcyclists, aka okada riders, around 10.45am today (Wednesday).

“The incident was occasioned by an encounter between policemen manning the black spot and an okada rider plying the route way beyond the Lagos State approved time of 10pm.

“As he approached the police pin down point, the police team observed that he carried a passenger with a big bag placed between him and the rider and so they flagged him down. But instead of obeying the police signal, the okada man increased his speed in order to evade police scrutiny.  Sadly, he ended up in a ditch and passed on, while his associate with the suspicious bag vanished into thin air.

“However, around 10am today, okada riders sympathetic to their late colleague mobilised in their thousands and attempted to burn the Ibeshe Police Post. They were resisted. So, they moved and found a softer target, which was a police van stationed at a known black spot in Ibeshe, and set it ablaze.”

Oti said the police command would no longer condone destruction of its property, adding that it might use firearms to stop such actions in the future.

The police spokesperson, who said 63 suspects had already been arrested, urged residents to register their grievances against police action with the authorities for appropriate action.

“The CP Lagos has directed that the 63 okada riders arrested for burning the police vehicle should be charged to court for arson. He has also directed the Officer-in-Charge, Legal, to file a motion to a court of competent jurisdiction to surcharge the suspects for the purchase of another police patrol vehicle,” he added.

"It's very sad and frustrating each time we hear something from the Media about our daughter. Recently, government said that negotiation for my daughter's release is complicated.

As parents, we should be informed of any development before going to press. The government's attitude of relaying the information is making me angrier and more frightened by the day. Each time a story like this come up." she said.

Medical experts have differed over the forthcoming football match between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Super Eagles

As Nigerian football fans warm up to watch live friendly football match between Super Eagles and the football team from the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, Nigerian medical doctors have expressed divergent views over the match following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the central African country.

While some say, there is no cause for alarm, some of the doctors called for stringent precautionary measures to avoid the mistake of the past.

In the views of a professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Prof. Olufemi Fasamade said there is no cause for alarm as the likelihood of bringing the virus to country was low.

According to Fasamade, Ebola is a condition easily suspected and vigilant port health authorities can screen and isolate ill people at the ports.

He explained that at risk people can also be identified by simply administering a questionnaire too.

“So there should be no panic or fear. Ebola is endemic in that country like Lassa fever is endemic in ours and Zika fever in others, he explained.

However, expressing divergent views, the Chairman Medical Guild, Dr Saheed Babajide who urged the Federal government to demand for the  health status of the team and also authentic the report here in Nigeria before the team is allowed into the country.

According to Saheed, it would be disastrous if Nigeria should repeat the mistake of the past.

“Even after authenticating the results, as the team is landing at the airport, there should be comprehensive screening of the team again.  The government should look beyond the diplomatic problem, but consider the risk that will come out of it if anyone of them is infected and a single Nigeria contract it.

“If it were in developed countries like the United State they will not even allow them to come but because we are Africans, in the spirit of oneness, we should test all of them before the commencement of the match.”

He further lamented that even in the health facilities Nigeria was not proactive in terms of prevention. “What is on ground? By now, with the 2014 experience, Nigeria would have build Infectious disease hospitals at least in all the six geopolitical zones.  But we are waiting for it to happen first.

“When you go to different public hospitals, all the precautionary measures are not available in the hospitals. We should have free running tap water, disposable cloves, face masks, needles and other consumables but these things are not available. Government at all level should sit down and map out strategies on how to prevent Ebola or any other infectious disease by making sure the borders and hospitals are safe.”

Nigeria has been expending billions of naira in the importation of fish which is a viable source of protein to cater for demanding local occasion.

File Photo

Following ongoing effort by the federal government to diversify the nation’s economy, it has emerged that Nigeria can save over N288 billion ($800 million) being spent on the importation of fishes annually, if the nation’s deep ocean resources are optimally developed and harnessed.

Director/Head, Fisheries Resources Department, Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Dr. Parcy Ochuko Obatola, who disclosed this, said Nigeria is naturally endowed with a lot of marine resources.

According to him, these resources have been left untapped over the decades thereby leading to huge economic losses. Research, she further stated that Nigeria consumes about 2million metric tons of fishes every year but can only produce less than 800,000 metric tons domestically thereby necessitating the importation of about 1.2 million metric tons.

She disclosed that over 70 per cent of the fishes domestically supplied are produced by small scale fishermen whose activities litter the coast line.

“Right now when we look at the demand and supply of fishes in Nigeria, there is still a huge deficit. The demand is almost three million metric tons per annum. The supply is about two million metric tons and there is still a deficit of over one million including those imported and those produced within this country. We are producing about 800,000 metric tons in Nigeria.

So we can see the reason we actually need to carry out activities when it comes to blue economy.

“Most of the fisheries that are exploited in Nigeria are done at the inshore waters and have consequently put a lot of pressure on the resources and negatively impacted the ecosystem via indiscriminate pollution, water contamination and other forms of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing otherwise known as IEUs. This has translated into a situation where there are lesser catches and smaller sizes of fishes”, she stressed.

She therefore, called on the government and other stakeholders to help ensure that the activities of the fishermen are regulated and managed while the deep ocean resources are tapped to help reduce pressure on the inshore waters.

Obatola further explained that various surveys conducted by the institute had shown that some rare species of fishes and other marine resources are in the Nigerian territorial waters especially at the deep oceans revealing that practicable recommendations on how they can be exploited for the economic benefits of the nation have been forwarded to the federal government.

She stressed that Nigeria could be losing about N50 billion yearly to illegal fishing and other unregulated activities of intruders at the deep oceans.

“We have carried out surveys and found out that there are resources in the deeper waters that the fishing industry can exploit so that the inshore waters would have a respite, if the pressure on them is reduced. We have other resources out there that can be exploited. As I am talking to you right now, Nigeria as a nation is not exploiting our Tuna resources but that doesn’t mean that people are not exploiting it. People come from other places to exploit them on our territorial waters.

“Apart from that, we also have what is called harima-bondi. It is the kind of fish that can replace the imported sardine; in fact it was canned in this institute just to let the industry know what can be done. Tuna was also canned in this institute years back so that the industry can go further to exploit other resources out there,” she said

The expert explained that part of the resources present in the nation’s deeper waters is the mesopelagic resource, which is very useful for the production of fish meals noting that the major problem that has hindered aquaculture from being what it should be in Nigeria is the input.

She disclosed that fish meals constitute about 70 per cent of the running cost of an aquacultural establishment.

“Feed is very pertinent because a crucial component of that feed is fish meal and as we say right now, fish meal is mainly imported to Nigeria. So, that’s another way of getting our money out via capital flight if we are able to substantiate it now that we know we have it. Our duty is to look at the quantum because another value chain that the fishing industry can go into is getting the mesopelagic resource and turning it to the fish meal that will now be incorporated into the fish feed that the aquaculture sector uses.

“We actually have a lot of resources but it is not about just having the resources. We need to work on how we maximize or exploit them so that it will be useful for us in the country and also the artisanal sector. There is enough that can be done and we are playing our own role,” she said.

A journalist has been found dead in the pool of her own blood right inside her house where her kids also live.

It has been reported that a female journalist was found dead Thursday at her home in Mexico.

The woman was reportedly found dead with some stab wounds to the back of the neck, the state attorney general’s office said.

According to the Agence France Presse, AFP, Alicia Diaz Gonzalez, 52, was found by her children, who were upstairs at the time and did not hear anything awry, the office said.

The woman “was on the floor, face down, in a pool of blood having suffered blows,” a source from the Nuevo Leon state prosecutor’s office told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The death was confirmed by El Financiero newspaper, where she had worked since January. Editor Mauricio Mejia called for an “urgent… official response” to the death on social media.

Authorities have not established a motive for the crime.

Diaz’s colleagues told AFP she reported on local business activity and financial issues, not “sensitive” information such as drug trafficking.

Still, the National Human Rights Commission urged authorities to focus their investigation on Diaz’s line of work.

Last week, journalist Juan Carlos Huerta was shot dead as he left his home in a suburb of Villahermosa in southeast Mexico.

His murder took place one year after Javier Valdez, who received international recognition for his coverage of drug trafficking, was gunned down in broad daylight in his native Culiacan, Sinaloa, where powerful cartels operate.

Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a journalist, with more than 100 reporters killed since 2000. Most of those crimes remain unpunished.

She said Ikeji was neither engaged nor pregnant. However, Linda in a post addressing Kemi Olunoyo’s claim, queried why someone who she helped while in prison could utter false claims about her pregnancy.

“Do have and enjoy the best pregnancy You can. Sad and bitter women leave your fellow woman alone. Women another woman isn’t your problem. God heal you all of all this Hurt and hatred.

“Because you sin differently don’t make you right. THE REASON SOME WOMAN WILL ALWAYS BE UNDER AND NEVER REACH GREATNESS IS HATE, ENVY AND LACK OF JOY FOR THE NEXT WOMAN.
