Teneo Intelligence believes President Muhammadu Buhari whose popularity has diminished in the last three years could be unseated.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari could lose power in February’s election if the opposition manages to unite, according to New York, United States of America-based analysis firm, Teneo Intelligence.

A close governorship election over the weekend in the southwestern state of Osun, currently held by Buhari’s All Progressives Congress, bodes badly for the ruling party and signals its waning popularity, Teneo said in a note to clients.

While Nigeria’s electoral commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) said there would be a rerun at seven polling stations on September 27, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party is leading by a thin margin, based on results so far.

“There is already a clear message sent from Osun State: provided the PDP remains united, and the vote is reasonably free and fair, Buhari and his APC are likely to lose the general elections,” said Malte Liewerscheidt, an analyst at Teneo.

The southwest was key to Buhari’s victory in 2015, which marked the first democratic transition of power from one party to another in Africa’s biggest oil producer.

The 75-year-old former General’s opponents accuse him of not doing enough to revive an economy still struggling after the 2014 crash in crude prices and to stop the spread of deadly communal clashes.

The PDP is to choose a presidential candidate during its national convention on October 5 and 6.

Several prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Bukola Saraki, the head of the Senate, are campaigning for the role.

The APC’s primaries were rescheduled to September 28 from September 27, the party said on Monday in an emailed statement.

Buhari is currently its only presidential candidate.

The mother of Leah Sharibu, the abducted Dapchi girl and others have dragged the Federal Government to court.
Leah Sharibu and mother

According to a report by Punch Metro, over seven months after the abduction of Leah Sharibu by Boko Haram insurgents, Mrs Rebecca Sharibu, mother of the kidnapped schoolgirl, has filed an action at the Federal High Court in Lagos, claiming N500m damages.

Leah Sharibu was one of the 110 female students of Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, who had been held in captivity since February 19, 2018, by Boko Haram terrorists on account of her Christian faith.

Punch Metro reports that the embattled mother in the suit jointly filed with Daniel David Kadzai and a United States-based Lift-Up-Now Incorporation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, demanded N500m as a compensation for the indignities and human deprivations suffered by Leah since her abduction in February 2018.

A copy of the court processes was made available to journalists on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State capital.

Also joined in the suit dated September 19, 2018, with no FCH/L/cs/1528/18, were the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The defendants were joined over their failure to ensure the release of Leah and for failing in their statutory responsibilities.

Among the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs is an order of the court to direct and mandate the defendants to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Leah from the custody of her captors.

The plaintiffs also prayed the court for an order compelling the defendants to employ every means in securing her release.

Nigerians in Ghana have cried out after authorities in Ghana closed about 400 of their businesses.
President Muhamadu Buhari of Nigeria and Ghana’s Akufo-Addo.

More than 400 businesses owned by Nigerians have been closed by authorities in Ghana, sparking a protest by owners who have issued a week ultimatum within which to resolve the surrounding the maltreatment of Nigerian business community in Ghana.

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) have written a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the issue.

The association gave a one-week ultimatum to the commission to intervene in the matter, warning that the association would occupy the ECOWAS premises if the situation in Ghana was not addressed.

In their protest march to the ECOWAS Secretariat on Monday in Abuja, the traders urged the Commission to intervene to stop the alleged victimisation of Nigerian business men and women in Ghana.

According to some local media reports on Tuesday, the President of NANT, Mr. Ken Ukaoha, stated that the development has reached a point where the Ghanaian Parliament has passed a legislation to make the business environment hostile to foreign investors.

He said that the ECOWAS President, Jean-Claude Brou, had been petitioned over the development.

“This is a save our soul call and the urgency of this protest is to inform you of the state of fear, uncertainty and insecurity that Nigerian traders are currently subjected to in the hands of the government and people of Ghana in different cities under the coordination of Ghana Investment Promotion Centre and Ministry of Trade and Industry,” Ukaoha said.

According to him, the members of the association have been shut out of their business premises in pursuance of the eviction order dated July 27, 2018, demanding that “we must have $1m as minimum foreign investment capital to do business in Ghana”.

There is the strong possibility that Nigeria could return to recession following the adverse economic indicators.

CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday warned that weak economic fundamentals currently being shown by the economy were putting the country’s exit from recession under threat.

The Nigerian economy exited recession in 2017 after suffering contraction for five consecutive quarters.

Addressing journalists shortly after the two-day meeting of the MPC members held at the headquarters of the apex bank, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said the economy had started showing signs of weakness.

For instance, he said the committee was concerned that there was a fresh threat of recession as the economy recorded growth rate of 1.95 per cent and 1.5 per cent during the first and the second quarters of this year, respectively.

He noted that the slowdown emanated from the oil sector, with strong linkages to employment and growth.

For instance, the apex bank boss said the late implementation of the 2018 budget, weakening demand and consumer spending, rising contractor debts, and low minimum wage were some of the risks to output growth.

Others, according to him, are the impact of flooding on agricultural output, continued security challenges in the North-East and North-Central zones, and growing level of sovereign debts.

A beauty queen has been stripped of her crown just days after winning it after a secret was discovered about the young woman.
Veronkia Didusenko secured the Miss Ukraine title last Thursday

Veronkia Didusenko, the new Miss Ukraine has watched her shiny crown being taken off her after she failed to disclose this important information.

According to Daily Star, Veronkia Didusenko took the crown at the beauty pageant in Ukraine’s capital Kiev last Thursday.

But her victory was short-lived, as she was disqualified when organisers found out she lied about her personal life.

According to the competition rules, mothers or women who have been married are not allowed to enter the pageant.

However, the 23-year-old left out the fact that she has a four-year-old son with her ex-husband on the application form.

In a statement released yesterday, spokeswoman Victoria Kiose said: “Only a woman who has never been married and has never had children can take part in the pageant, according to the rules.”

Miss Ukraine officials explained Veronkia had broken the rules and was no longer eligible for the role.

Veronkia Didusenko

It means she will be replaced by another contestant at the Miss Universe 2018 competition in China this year.

Miss Great Britain had similar rules banning mothers and married women, but was abolished in 2013.

Veronkia – who has 11,500 Instagram followers – posted a message on the site thanking fans for their support at such a “difficult time”.

She wrote: “Friends, I have never been a blogger, but we already have more than 10,000.

“Thank you for your sincere support at such a difficult time for me. You are fantastic.”

However, the beauty faced harsh criticism from some followers who accused her of being “dumb” as she failed to understand the rules.

One wrote: “What a silly thing to do.”

Another added: “There are so many pageants, she could confuse a Miss contest with a Mrs one.”

The midfielder will no longer wear the armband, but Mourinho is in no hurry to reveal why he took such a drastic decision.

Paul Pogba

Jose Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba has been stripped of the vice-captaincy at Manchester United, but insists they have not fallen out.

Reports began to circulate prior to United's disappointing 8-7 penalty shoot-out defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday that Pogba – who was rested – had been relieved of the role.

Pogba was slammed by his manager during training and told he would never wear the captain's armband again, as he did not have the right temperament for the job.

The French World Cup-winner had captained United three times this season in the absence of Antonio Valencia, including the Premier League opener against Leicester City.

Mourinho's decision to give Pogba the armband on that occasion came hard on the heels of suggestions Barcelona were pressing to sign the 25-year-old.

But the midfielder has made several comments which some have considered to be veiled digs at Mourinho this season, the latest coming following the 1-1 draw with Wolves on Saturday, and the Portuguese confirmed reports of the change after the Derby clash.

He told Sky Sports: "The only truth is that I made the decision of Pogba not to be the second captain anymore. [There was] no fall out.

"The person who made the decision to be second captain was also me. It's just one decision which I don't have to explain."

After United's win over Leicester, Pogba claimed he would be fined if he commented on his situation at the club, while he also conceded his attitude was not right in the 3-2 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Pogba's latest comments on Monday saw him question Mourinho's tactics, as he implored United to "attack, attack, attack" when playing at home, though he is adamant his remarks were misrepresented.

Media reports have claimed Pogba will not demand a move away from United in January, though he is said to be ready to consider his options again at the end of the campaign.

Will Smith jumped out of the helicopter

Will Smith has celebrated turning 50 in style.

Bungee jumping probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least he won't forget his big day in a hurry.

And this wasn't a standard bungee jump, the star decided to do it out of a helicopter over the Grand Canyon, watched by his family and friends.

Will shared the moment on his YouTube channel and once he'd made the jump but was still dangling he said: "It goes from pure terror to pure bliss."

The video is called Will Smith: The Jump.

A warning, there's some language in the video that you might find offensive.

Just before the jump he seemed a little nervous, but he soon got into it and blew kisses to the crowd.

His wife Jada Pinkett Smith and his three kids Trey, Jaden and Willow were watching, along with his friend Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Doing a bungee while attached to a helicopter added an extra element of danger because the helicopter is constantly moving.

Hanging off the edge of the helicopter, Will took a little sneak peek down the canyon and shook his head, shouting: "Never look down!"

But once he'd taken the plunge he seemed to have forgotten his fear and what happened during the test.

He posted on Instagram before the jump that they were testing with a dummy, but the dummy's leg fell off during it.

Once he made it on the crash mat and was detached from the helicopter his family and friends looked relieved.

They then watched a video of the jump, with Will and Alfonso doing some post-jump analysis.

Will said: "You have to commit.

"Life is hard, you might get hurt, your heart might get broken, you might lose your job, but you've still got to commit."

And commit he did, he was challenged by Yes theory to do the jump.

He performed the bungee jump to raise awareness of the charity Global Citizen, which aims to end extreme poverty by 2030.

Will's jump is raising money to support a project called Education Cannot Wait. It provides access to education for children in crisis-affected areas.

The All Progressives Congress has authorized the adoption of direct primaries for several states across the country.

APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday released its approved mode of primaries for 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for Saturday’s governorship primaries.

According to the list, the direct method, which involves all registered card carrying members of the party; and the indirect mode where elected and statutory delegates take part, will be used.

The APC NWC released the list of approved methods in a statement by the party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, in Abuja.

The states that are to elect their governorship candidates via the direct method are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, Imo and Kano.

Others are Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Taraba, Zamfara and the Federal Capital Territory.

States that got the nod to pick candidates using the indirect mode are Adamawa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Kebbi.

Others are Nasarawa, Oyo, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Yobe.

Before the Tuesday directive of the APC NWC, some state chapters of the party, including Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Imo and Bauchi, had adopted indirect primaries

The Ogun State chapter of the APC had, at a meeting attended by the state executive of the party, leaders and lawmakers on Thursday, opted for indirect primaries.

In Imo, Governor Rochas Okorocha-backed state executive had said it preferred the indirect primaries despite the opposition of stakeholders, including Senator Hope Uzodima.

The requests of state chapters of the party in Adamawa, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers for indirect primaries were, however, approved by the NWC.

The PUNCH gathered that the NWC, after weighing options available to it, decided to change the methods in some states.

It was further learnt that such was the case in Imo State where the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Rochas Okorocha hails from, as the NWC opted for direct primaries.

A highly placed member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to journalists on the issue, said the decision had to be taken to save the party from implosion.

The source said, “The case of Imo, especially, had to be handled carefully because it is currently our stronghold in the South-East. We decided that we must take a position which will encourage members to remain in the fold. We went for direct primary for two reasons.

“One, we have cases in court arising from the last state congresses. We have learnt a thing or two from the legal tussle between the former National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and the Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

“If we go for the indirect method and the court nullifies the actions of the faction of the state executive in charge of the process, we will have a problem but if we have the direct method where all card carrying members of the party participate we will be safer, it is that simple.

“Secondly, the direct method is more difficult if not impossible to manipulate and the outcome is likely to generate less acrimony.”

Recall that Article 20 of the APC Constitution (October 2014, as Amended), stipulates how primaries for nomination of candidates for election from the local government chairmen to those vying for the position of president should be conducted.

Article 20 (iii) reads, “Nomination of candidates for governor shall be through direct or indirect primary election to be conducted at the appropriate level.

“(iv) a. Further to Article 20 (iii) of this constitution, indirect primaries for the purpose of nominating a candidate shall be done at a designated venue for that purpose, by an electoral college of delegates democratically elected by members of party from the various wards contained in the particular constituency at congresses.”

Stakeholders reject indirect primaries in Kaduna

Some stakeholders in Kaduna on Tuesday reacted negatively to the NWC announcement.

The stakeholders under the aegis of Kaduna State Aspirants and Stakeholders Forum described the adoption of the indirect primary for the state as a sham.

The state chapter of the APC, led by Air Commodore Emmanuel Jekada (retd), said to be loyalists of the Kaduna State Governor; Nasir El-Rufai, had adopted indirect primary.

Jekada had said the direct primary was not applicable to Kaduna because of the absence of a comprehensive register of party members, which could lead to chaos.

However, the stakeholders’ forum at a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday faulted the APC chairman.

Spokesman for the aspirants and stakeholders, Alhaji Hassan Sandi, an aspirant for the House of Representatives seat, said the indirect mode was designed to ease vote buying.

Sandi said, “We remain resolutely committed to direct primaries as the most efficacious mode of determining our best candidates for the governorship and legislative positions in Kaduna State.

“We are convinced that adopting direct primaries will not only diminish the corruptive influence of vote-buying, it will give party members a voice and promote the growth of a strong, virile and people-rooted APC.”

Ogun aspirants hail APC NWC

Two governorship aspirants in Ogun State, Senator Adegbenga Kaka and Dapo Abiodun, hailed the decision of the NWC.

Kaka said it was what the NWC earlier prescribed, and what the stakeholders agreed upon in the meeting of September 5, 2018.

Kaka said, “It is in consonance with the communiqué issued at the end of the party’s stakeholders meeting held on September 5, 2018, in Abeokuta, the state capital. Whether they like it or not, the decision of NWC supersedes that of the state executive committee.

“Since the proponents of consensus openly admitted its failure, they should also admit the failure of indirect primaries by embracing direct primaries as directed by the NWC.”

Abiodun, who spoke through one of his media aides, Olamide Lawal, said, “It is a good development that the NWC did not dance to the tune of the state executive committee. The NWC has refused to be intimidated.”

When contacted, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Wole Elegbede, said, “I will get back to you, I need to consult with the party hierarchy.”

It is a welcome development – Imo APC

The Imo State chapter of the APC said that it was at home with the direct primaries.

The party state Publicity Secretary, Jones Onwuasoanya, said APC in the state was expecting no fewer than 1,000,000 party members to vote.

He said the method would allow members of the party the opportunity of choosing the people who would represent it during the general elections.

Onwuasoanya said, “We are confident that this (direct primaries) will afford Imolites and the world the opportunity to appreciate how popular our great party is in the state as we are expecting more than 1,000,000 registered party members to participate in the process across the state.”

“This landmark decision is a good step towards resolving all claims of popularity by some aspirants and we urge them to intensify efforts at mobilising party members to vote for them.”

Rivers APC, Abe disagree on decision

But the governorship aspirant on the platform of the APC in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe, said the decision of the NWC to adopt indirect primaries for Rivers State should not override the earlier decision of the party’s National Executive Committee.

Abe stated that the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had during the party’s last NEC meeting, listed Rivers State as one of the states where direct primaries would be held.

Abe said NEC had earlier decided to adopt direct primaries in Rivers State because of the many legal issues facing the party in the state.

“But the decision of the NWC to hold indirect primaries in Rivers State goes against the grain of reason.

“First, because direct primaries were ordered in other states, including Imo State that has similar issues we have in Rivers State. Also, the National Chairman of the party at the last NEC meeting of the party had himself listed Rivers State as one of the states where direct primaries would be held because of many legal issues that we are facing.”

But the Rivers State Chapter of APC described the approval of indirect primary option for the state by the NWC as a welcome development.

A statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chris Finebone, read in part, “This decision is in line with the resolution of the expanded State Executive Committee taken at its meeting of Thursday, September 6, 2018, as directed by the NEC of our party.

“In the said meeting, the direct, indirect and consensus options were critically examined and the majority of members overwhelmingly voted to adopt the indirect mode of primaries.

“Therefore, it is satisfying that all the reasons given for adopting the indirect mode of primaries were found to be convincing, hence the acceptance of the option for Rivers State by the NWC.”

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine in the United States and the University of Tsukuba in Japan have revealed that doing this one thing can help improve the brain.
Exercise

Exercise not only benefits your body, but also improves your memory, researchers from two renowned universities have found.

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine in the United States and the University of Tsukuba in Japan came to this conclusion in a recent paper, just published.

Scientists invited 36 volunteers who were in their early 20s to do 10 minutes of light exercise before taking a memory test in which they were shown pictures like broccoli or picnic baskets and asked to recall them later. The same experiment was repeated with the same group of volunteers without exercising.

“The memory task really was quite challenging,” said Michael Yassa, co-author of the study and a neuroscientist at the University of California, Irvine. “We used very tricky similar items to see if they would remember whether it was this exact picnic basket versus that picnic basket.”

Researchers also scanned brains of some of the participants during the experiment. They found enhanced communication between regions involved in the storage and recollection of memories in brains of those who had exercised.

This suggested that just 10 minutes of light exercise like walking, yoga or Tai Chi might boost memory power.

As all the volunteers in the experiment were relatively young, researchers are still working to look at the effects of light exercise on older people.

“Our main goal is to try to develop an exercise prescription that can be used by older adults who might have disabilities or mobility impairments, but can still adopt a very simple exercise regimen and be able to, perhaps, stave off cognitive decline,” said Yassa.

Bill Cosby leaves court in handcuffs

A BBC report has shown that popular American comedian, Bill Cosby has been sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for s*xual assault.

Cosby, 81, has also been categorised as a s*xually violent predator, meaning he must undergo counselling for life and be listed on the s*x offender registry.

The actor declined to make a statement when a judge gave him the opportunity after the judgement was delivered on Tuesday.

The 81-year-old star of ‘The Cosby Show’ was found guilty in April of drugging and s*xually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004 at a retrial in April.

Ms Constand, 30 years his junior, was working at Cosby’s former university when they met. She accused Cosby of incapacitating her with pills before molesting her while she drifted in and out of consciousness.

The comedian claimed the encounter was consensual and has always denied any wrongdoing.

Judge Steven O’Neill has also denied Cosby’s request for bail pending appeal.

After delivering the sentence, Judge O’Neill said: “Mr Cosby you took her beautiful healthy young spirit and crushed it.”

He told Ms Constand he “heard the very clear impact” the assault had on her life.

Ahead of the sentence, the judge designated Cosby a s*xually violent predator; despite the defence’s argument that Cosby’s age and blindness mean he is not a threat.

More than 50 women have come forward to publicly accuse Cosby of s*xual assault spanning several decades.

Cosby’s conviction on three counts of aggravated indecent assault refers solely to accusations from Ms Constand.

In the next 24hrs, the NLC will be embarking on a nationwide strike if the government fails to address the increment of its salaries.

File Photo

The Nigeria Labour Congress has directed workers to proceed on a nationwide warning strike with effect from Thursday.

This followed the delay in negotiations for a new minimum wage by the Federal Government. General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, directed all industrial unions in the country and state councils to immediately begin the mobilisation of their members in readiness for the warning strike.

It read, “This is to inform you that the organised labour shall commence a nationwide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage effective midnight of Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

“All industrial unions and all state councils are to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action nationwide. A formal notification letter will be sent later in the day.”

President Muhammadu Buhari had in November 2017, inaugurated a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage for the country.

The government had assured workers that the committee, which began sitting in March 2018, would conclude its work by the end of this month.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who assured the workers of a new wage by the end of the third quarter, later announced that the committee had yet to finalise its work.

He stated that the government needed more time to consult before arriving at a figure which would be discussed by the committee.

The panel subsequently adjourned indefinitely.

The development, however, angered organised labour which accused the government of delaying the process and issued a two-week ultimatum.

It threatened to embark on a strike if the government failed to recall the committee and conclude negotiation on the new minimum wage.

Though Vice President Yemi Osinbajo held a meeting with the tripartite committee last week in response to the threat, the unions appeared unimpressed with the development.

The labour ministry spokesman, Mr Samuel Olowookere, could not be reached for comments as he did not respond to phone calls. He had yet to reply an SMS on the strike threat as of the time of filing this report.

Two people who were caught flying a drone above the residence of a former governor have been apprehended by security operatives.

Two suspects were said to have been arrested on Tuesday for flying a drone over the house of a former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, located within the Ibara, GRA, Abeokuta .

This was contained in a statement signed by one of the aides of the ex-governor, Adekunle Adeyemi, a copy of which was made available to a Punch correspondent .

The statement added that two suspects, a lady and a young man, whose identities were yet to be unravelled, were allegedly caught by the private security operatives attached to his house, using the drone to monitor activities in Osoba’ s compound .

Adeyemi said the drone was later shot down by the security operatives, and the suspects could not give a coherent explanation for their action when apprehended .

He described the incident as another in a series of the security breach to Osoba’ s residence. Adeyemi said the ex-governor just returned from a trip to the United Kingdom on Tuesday and was in his Abeokuta home, in preparation for a meeting to discuss a hitch- free conduct of the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress scheduled for Friday .

The statement reads: “This will be another series of a breach of the security of Chief Osoba’ s home. A few years ago, unknown persons invaded part of the compound and took a reasonable time to dig out buried armored cable. This was done in a most professional manner .

“It would also be recalled that sometimes ago, two bungalows within the premises were vandalised by unknown hoodlums.

“Another breach was when insulting graffiti was written on the fence of Chief Osoba’ s house, not too long ago.

“Those involved in the latest action have been handed over to an arm of the government for investigations.”

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was not aware of such arrest being made .

He said, "I am not aware of such arrest."

These are screenshots from a viral video of a prophet rocking a young lady from behind at a wedding ceremony in Ekiti State. The party took place over the weekend and the religious cleric threw caution to the wind.

The identity of the prophet dressed in a white garment remains unknown. According to rumours, he exercised some stellar dance skills as he kept his waist close to the bum of the lady.

It's not clear if the white garment man was under the influence or he was engulfed by the hysteria of the moment.
