A Nigerian returnee from Libya has revealed that many girls are forced to sleep with men to be able to get loaves of bread.
Esther and Okafor

Agbone Esther, a 22-year-old woman, who hails from Efurrun in Warri, Delta State, has revealed how Nigerian girls are eking out their three square meals in Libya.

According to a report by New Telegraph, the returnee, who possesses an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication from the Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, regretted that she joined the trip, after paying over N200,000 to an anchor-man in an unscrupulous manner on June 22, last year.

She was among the first batch of 5,499 Nigerian youths, out of which 78 are indigenes of Delta State, that were rescued by the high-powered delegation of the Federal Government led by the Minister of Internal Affairs, under the auspices of the European Union (EU) in conjunction with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in January, this year.

Esther lamented how they were being fed with addictive foods inside the cell to make them sleep off and forgot about their meals.

Esther, who narrated how they travelled by land from Kano to Niger, through Agades before they got to Libya, confirmed in Asaba yesterday that prostitution was the order of the day among Nigerian girls.

She said: “From the point of departure in Nigeria to the landing point in Libya, it was prostitution all the way. I have no intention of staying in Libya, but my plan to pass through Libya failed. A lot of our girls go into prostitution when they are hungry. To get a loaf of ‘Umzr’ bread to assuage their hunger, our girls give s*x to Libyan men at random. So, many get pregnant through unwarranted s*x.”

Her views were corroborated by another returnee, Okafor Abrahim, who hails from Umunede in Ika North East, Delta State, but said he embarked on the journey to Libya in November 2016, having paid over N150,000 to a middleman.

Former Chelsea defender and legend, John Terry has left Aston Villa in his bid to seek a better challenge next season.

John Terry

Ex-England International, John Terry has announced his departure from Aston Villa after just one season following a disappointing campaign where they failed to gain promotion from the Championship league.

“Today I part ways with Aston Villa Football Club. I’m very proud to have had the opportunity to play and captain this great and huge club,” he said yesterday in a statement on Instagram page.

It would be recalled that last year Villa moved to snap up Terry on a free transfer following his trophy-laden career at Chelsea, where five Premier League titles, and winners’ medals in the Champions League and Europa League even though he did not play in either final were among his list of achievements.

Despite his age and being in the twilight of his career, former England skipper Terry made a telling contribution at Villa and captained them as they finished fourth in the regular season, securing a spot in the playoffs.

It had been reported that a one-year extension was to be handed to the centre-back if Villa managed to return to the Premier League, but a 1-0 defeat to Fulham in the play-off final ended those plans.

A statement from club owner Tony Xia earlier on Wednesday hinted at imminent changes, as he told supporters Villa “will face severe FFP [Financial Fair Play] challenges next season”.

And it will come as a surprise to few that Terry, whose contract was reportedly worth £80,000 per week, is the first to move on.

According to a report by Punch Metro, pandemonium broke out on Wednesday in the Ibeshe, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, after a mob, made up of motorcycle riders, attacked the Ibeshe Police Station with stones, bottles and attempted to burn it down.

Punch Metro reports that the mob was prevented from carrying out the act by shots fired by policemen attached to the station, who also called for reinforcement from surrounding divisions.

After beating a retreat, it was gathered that the crowd set ablaze a patrol vehicle in the area and attacked policemen in sight.

It was learnt that a motorcycle rider, identified as Paul, aka Baba Ezine, had died in the early hours of Wednesday after an accident which residents claimed was caused by the police.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Ebonyi State indigene had attempted to evade a police checkpoint when he had the accident.

She said, “The man was taking a passenger somewhere on Tuesday when he ran into the police checkpoint. He tried to evade the policemen, but crashed into a gutter. People said the policemen chased him into the gutter.

“After the accident, the police operatives, instead of taking him to a hospital, left him in the gutter. They, however, seized his motorcycle, which they took to their station.

“The man’s friends later took him to a hospital where he died this morning (Wednesday). The man’s kinsmen and colleagues from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, mobilised and took his corpse to the palace of the Baale of Owode, who urged them to be calm and promised to do something.

“From the palace, they took his remains to the police station. The police fired shots into the air to scare them away. That was when they found a police van which they burnt.”

Another resident said the deceased, who was in his 40s, had recently lost his wife and mother.

He said, “Paul’s wife died in September 2017, while his mother, who came from the village to take care of their five children, died in February 2018. Since then, he lived alone with the children in the Owode Labake area.”

A community leader, who did not want to be identified, lamented that the police had been arresting innocent residents on the street in a bid to apprehend those behind the burning of the police vehicle.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, in a statement on Wednesday, said the attack on the station was unwarranted.

He said the police authorities would ensure that those behind the arson were punished.

He said, “The Lagos State Police Command notes with regret the unfortunate burning of a police patrol van stationed at a black spot in Ibeshe, in the Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, by irate motorcyclists, aka okada riders, around 10.45am today (Wednesday).

“The incident was occasioned by an encounter between policemen manning the black spot and an okada rider plying the route way beyond the Lagos State approved time of 10pm.

“As he approached the police pin down point, the police team observed that he carried a passenger with a big bag placed between him and the rider and so they flagged him down. But instead of obeying the police signal, the okada man increased his speed in order to evade police scrutiny.  Sadly, he ended up in a ditch and passed on, while his associate with the suspicious bag vanished into thin air.

“However, around 10am today, okada riders sympathetic to their late colleague mobilised in their thousands and attempted to burn the Ibeshe Police Post. They were resisted. So, they moved and found a softer target, which was a police van stationed at a known black spot in Ibeshe, and set it ablaze.”

Oti said the police command would no longer condone destruction of its property, adding that it might use firearms to stop such actions in the future.

The police spokesperson, who said 63 suspects had already been arrested, urged residents to register their grievances against police action with the authorities for appropriate action.

“The CP Lagos has directed that the 63 okada riders arrested for burning the police vehicle should be charged to court for arson. He has also directed the Officer-in-Charge, Legal, to file a motion to a court of competent jurisdiction to surcharge the suspects for the purchase of another police patrol vehicle,” he added.

"It's very sad and frustrating each time we hear something from the Media about our daughter. Recently, government said that negotiation for my daughter's release is complicated.

As parents, we should be informed of any development before going to press. The government's attitude of relaying the information is making me angrier and more frightened by the day. Each time a story like this come up." she said.

Medical experts have differed over the forthcoming football match between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Super Eagles

As Nigerian football fans warm up to watch live friendly football match between Super Eagles and the football team from the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, Nigerian medical doctors have expressed divergent views over the match following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the central African country.

While some say, there is no cause for alarm, some of the doctors called for stringent precautionary measures to avoid the mistake of the past.

In the views of a professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Prof. Olufemi Fasamade said there is no cause for alarm as the likelihood of bringing the virus to country was low.

According to Fasamade, Ebola is a condition easily suspected and vigilant port health authorities can screen and isolate ill people at the ports.

He explained that at risk people can also be identified by simply administering a questionnaire too.

“So there should be no panic or fear. Ebola is endemic in that country like Lassa fever is endemic in ours and Zika fever in others, he explained.

However, expressing divergent views, the Chairman Medical Guild, Dr Saheed Babajide who urged the Federal government to demand for the  health status of the team and also authentic the report here in Nigeria before the team is allowed into the country.

According to Saheed, it would be disastrous if Nigeria should repeat the mistake of the past.

“Even after authenticating the results, as the team is landing at the airport, there should be comprehensive screening of the team again.  The government should look beyond the diplomatic problem, but consider the risk that will come out of it if anyone of them is infected and a single Nigeria contract it.

“If it were in developed countries like the United State they will not even allow them to come but because we are Africans, in the spirit of oneness, we should test all of them before the commencement of the match.”

He further lamented that even in the health facilities Nigeria was not proactive in terms of prevention. “What is on ground? By now, with the 2014 experience, Nigeria would have build Infectious disease hospitals at least in all the six geopolitical zones.  But we are waiting for it to happen first.

“When you go to different public hospitals, all the precautionary measures are not available in the hospitals. We should have free running tap water, disposable cloves, face masks, needles and other consumables but these things are not available. Government at all level should sit down and map out strategies on how to prevent Ebola or any other infectious disease by making sure the borders and hospitals are safe.”

Nigeria has been expending billions of naira in the importation of fish which is a viable source of protein to cater for demanding local occasion.

File Photo

Following ongoing effort by the federal government to diversify the nation’s economy, it has emerged that Nigeria can save over N288 billion ($800 million) being spent on the importation of fishes annually, if the nation’s deep ocean resources are optimally developed and harnessed.

Director/Head, Fisheries Resources Department, Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Dr. Parcy Ochuko Obatola, who disclosed this, said Nigeria is naturally endowed with a lot of marine resources.

According to him, these resources have been left untapped over the decades thereby leading to huge economic losses. Research, she further stated that Nigeria consumes about 2million metric tons of fishes every year but can only produce less than 800,000 metric tons domestically thereby necessitating the importation of about 1.2 million metric tons.

She disclosed that over 70 per cent of the fishes domestically supplied are produced by small scale fishermen whose activities litter the coast line.

“Right now when we look at the demand and supply of fishes in Nigeria, there is still a huge deficit. The demand is almost three million metric tons per annum. The supply is about two million metric tons and there is still a deficit of over one million including those imported and those produced within this country. We are producing about 800,000 metric tons in Nigeria.

So we can see the reason we actually need to carry out activities when it comes to blue economy.

“Most of the fisheries that are exploited in Nigeria are done at the inshore waters and have consequently put a lot of pressure on the resources and negatively impacted the ecosystem via indiscriminate pollution, water contamination and other forms of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing otherwise known as IEUs. This has translated into a situation where there are lesser catches and smaller sizes of fishes”, she stressed.

She therefore, called on the government and other stakeholders to help ensure that the activities of the fishermen are regulated and managed while the deep ocean resources are tapped to help reduce pressure on the inshore waters.

Obatola further explained that various surveys conducted by the institute had shown that some rare species of fishes and other marine resources are in the Nigerian territorial waters especially at the deep oceans revealing that practicable recommendations on how they can be exploited for the economic benefits of the nation have been forwarded to the federal government.

She stressed that Nigeria could be losing about N50 billion yearly to illegal fishing and other unregulated activities of intruders at the deep oceans.

“We have carried out surveys and found out that there are resources in the deeper waters that the fishing industry can exploit so that the inshore waters would have a respite, if the pressure on them is reduced. We have other resources out there that can be exploited. As I am talking to you right now, Nigeria as a nation is not exploiting our Tuna resources but that doesn’t mean that people are not exploiting it. People come from other places to exploit them on our territorial waters.

“Apart from that, we also have what is called harima-bondi. It is the kind of fish that can replace the imported sardine; in fact it was canned in this institute just to let the industry know what can be done. Tuna was also canned in this institute years back so that the industry can go further to exploit other resources out there,” she said

The expert explained that part of the resources present in the nation’s deeper waters is the mesopelagic resource, which is very useful for the production of fish meals noting that the major problem that has hindered aquaculture from being what it should be in Nigeria is the input.

She disclosed that fish meals constitute about 70 per cent of the running cost of an aquacultural establishment.

“Feed is very pertinent because a crucial component of that feed is fish meal and as we say right now, fish meal is mainly imported to Nigeria. So, that’s another way of getting our money out via capital flight if we are able to substantiate it now that we know we have it. Our duty is to look at the quantum because another value chain that the fishing industry can go into is getting the mesopelagic resource and turning it to the fish meal that will now be incorporated into the fish feed that the aquaculture sector uses.

“We actually have a lot of resources but it is not about just having the resources. We need to work on how we maximize or exploit them so that it will be useful for us in the country and also the artisanal sector. There is enough that can be done and we are playing our own role,” she said.

A journalist has been found dead in the pool of her own blood right inside her house where her kids also live.

It has been reported that a female journalist was found dead Thursday at her home in Mexico.

The woman was reportedly found dead with some stab wounds to the back of the neck, the state attorney general’s office said.

According to the Agence France Presse, AFP, Alicia Diaz Gonzalez, 52, was found by her children, who were upstairs at the time and did not hear anything awry, the office said.

The woman “was on the floor, face down, in a pool of blood having suffered blows,” a source from the Nuevo Leon state prosecutor’s office told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The death was confirmed by El Financiero newspaper, where she had worked since January. Editor Mauricio Mejia called for an “urgent… official response” to the death on social media.

Authorities have not established a motive for the crime.

Diaz’s colleagues told AFP she reported on local business activity and financial issues, not “sensitive” information such as drug trafficking.

Still, the National Human Rights Commission urged authorities to focus their investigation on Diaz’s line of work.

Last week, journalist Juan Carlos Huerta was shot dead as he left his home in a suburb of Villahermosa in southeast Mexico.

His murder took place one year after Javier Valdez, who received international recognition for his coverage of drug trafficking, was gunned down in broad daylight in his native Culiacan, Sinaloa, where powerful cartels operate.

Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a journalist, with more than 100 reporters killed since 2000. Most of those crimes remain unpunished.

Another source said, “This is actually a worrisome and a condemnable act exhibited by the Police today.

“How can the Police, who are supposed to protect the citizens, be the source of panic in a peaceful community by storming a private residence without a search warrant, while shoot menacingly to scare away unharmed citizens, claiming to be in search of kidnappers?

“This shouldn’t be happening in a democratic state.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident said, the policemen were from the the Force Headquarters, Abuja, ”on lawful mission.”

“The policemen are from the Force Headquarters and they are doing their lawful duties,” Joseph confirmed

Contrary to popular beliefs that the anti-corruption fight under President Buhari has been ineffective, Magu has released figures on loot recovery and hundreds of convictions secured by his team.

Ibrahim Magu

The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has said that the country has recovered N500 billion and secured 486 convictions since he took over in November 2015 till date.

He made this known at the commissioning of the commission’s new head office in Abuja on Tuesday.

“In 2018 alone, we have secured 89 convictions. Thus so far, we have secured 486 convictions from November 2015 till date. We have recovered funds in different currencies and, so far, we have recovered more than N500 billion.

“The recoveries meant for the Federal Government are duly remitted to its account while recoveries for individuals and private institutions are equally paid to them in accordance with the law.

“We are also making strides as it relates to the prosecution of high-profile cases. For instance, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria was convicted in a case prosecuted by the EFCC.

“I, therefore, again, restate the commitment of the Commission to the fight against corruption.

“We do not go after innocent citizens, we go after those who have stolen and arrogated same to themselves, like President Buhari has said.”

Dignitaries at the event included President Muhammadu Buhari, Speaker of the House Representtives, Yakubu Dogara, and Commonwealth Secretary General Baroness Patricia Scotland.

Millions of fake accounts used to perpetrate unscrupulous activities have been taken down on Facebook as part of efforts to make the platform safer for use.

Facebook user

Facebook yesterday said it axed 583 million fake accounts in the first three months of 2018.

It said those closures came on top of blocking millions of attempts to create fake accounts every day.

The social media giant also detailed how it enforces “community standards” against s*xual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech.

Despite this, the group said fake profiles still make up 3-4 percent of all active accounts.

In a report released yesterday, Facebook claimed it “detected almost 100 percent of spam and removed 837 million posts assimilated to spam over the same period.

“Facebook pulled or slapped warnings on nearly 30 million posts containing s*xual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech during the first quarter.

“Improved technology using artificial intelligence had helped it act on 3.4 million posts containing graphic violence, nearly three times more than it had in the last quarter of 2017.

“In 85.6 percent of the cases, Facebook detected the images before being alerted to them by users,” said the report

The figure represents between 0.22 and 0.27 percent of the total content viewed by Facebook’s more than two billion users from January through March.

“In other words, of every 10,000 content views, an estimate of 22 to 27 contained graphic violence,” the report added.

Responses to rule violations include removing content, adding warnings to content that may be disturbing to some users while not violating Facebook standards; and notifying law enforcement in case of a “specific, imminent and credible threat to human life”.

Improved IT also helped Facebook take action against 1.9 million posts containing terrorist propaganda, a 73 percent increase. Nearly all were dealt with before any alert was raised, the company said.

It attributed the increase to the enhanced use of photo detection technology.

Hate speech is harder to police using automated methods, however, as racist or homophobic, hate speech is often quoted on posts by their targets or activists.

A phone repairer who decided to meddle in a fight between a Lagos politician and his wife on the street in Ogun State, has regretted his decision after landing himself in trouble.

Rasheed Sunkanmi

A young man who reportedly meddled in a scuffle between a Lagos politician and his wife on Jimoh Akinsanya Street in the Arepo area of Ogun State, has regretted his decision after landing himself in serious trouble.

According to a report by PUNCH Metro, the victim who is a phone repairer identified as Rasheed Sunkanmi, was going home on a motorcycle when he saw a crowd on the street trying to stop the politician, identified as Odukunle Kuti, from beating up his wife.

It was learnt that Rasheed was said to have made a snide remark at the politician for beating up a woman, which the ex-councillor of the Ikosi/Isheri Local Council Development Area overheard. The politician confronted the stranger for meddling in his family affair.

The confrontation reportedly resulted in a fight between the duo as they tore each other’s clothes into shreds. The politician who also owned a hotel in Arepo, later invited some soldiers, accusing the 27-year-old of robbery.

When the military men arrived at the scene, they, however, discovered that it was a fight between Kuti and Sunkanmi and they took the parties to their captain identified as Okoye, who was said to have mediated and dispersed the parties.

Not satisfied, the politician, a few days later, reported to the police at the Warewa division and Sunkanmi was invited to make a statement. About a month after the fight, Kuti was reported to have asked the police to charge the phone repairer to court, accusing him of the theft of his phone and money.

A witness, who identified himself only as Jimoh, said the fight occurred in early April 2018. He said, “Kuti and his wife had an issue which became a public matter.

“The man was passing by and he said something that Kuti overheard. He slapped Sunkanmi; the man replied the slap. That was what started the fight.”

While speaking to a correspondent, the victim on Monday, said he was touched by the way the politician allegedly beat up the woman.

He said, “The only thing I said was, ‘Why will a man be beating a woman like this?’ The man gave me fist blows and I retaliated with a punch; he got injured and said he would arrest and take me to court.

“That evening, he called some soldiers, saying there was a robbery in his house, whereas the fight occurred in front of a mosque. When the soldiers arrived, he said it was not a robbery, but that I interfered in his family matter. I was asked to apologise to him, which I did. But he said he did not want apology.”

The Ogun State indigene said about three days later, he was invited to the police station to make a statement on the matter, which he did.

He said he did not get any feedback from the police or the politician until on Sunday when Kuti came to his house.

“He said he had not forgiven me for the punch I gave him in the mouth. He said the army allowed me to escape on that day and that he had no intention of letting the matter go.

“I got a call from the police to report at the station. I was then told that the matter was going to court,”Sunkanmi added.

His aunt, Dr Ewatomilola Ayeni, alleged that Kuti threatened to kill her over the incident, and claimed that the former councillor was using his power to oppress her and Sunkanmi.

She said, “Why will he claim that there was a robbery when no such thing happened? It was also wrong for him to have assaulted his wife. When he saw me a day after the incident, he threatened to kill me. I said this in my statement to the police. It is a threat to my life.”

Kuti’s wife, when contacted on Monday, confirmed that there was a fight between her and the husband. She said she had run into hiding and did not witness the fight between her husband and Sunkanmi.

She said, “It is true that I had a misunderstanding with my husband and I ran out while he chased me. I don’t know anything about the guy until today (Monday) when the police called me and said I should report to the station on Wednesday.

"When I get to the police station, I will see the man; I was the one that was beaten. I did not see him and he fought for me. We have not settled the matter yet. He (Kuti) said the man is my boyfriend and that I planted him outside to beat him up.”

The ex-lawmaker said he wanted the case in court because he needed something to back up his claim to divorce his wife, whom he accused of infidelity. He also claimed that his wife “arranged” the phone repairer to assassinate him.

The 44-year-old Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State indigene said he had endured eight years of marital crises, adding that the Saturday incident was the climax.

He said, “On the day, she went to a party against my instruction. When she returned, I demanded the car key from her. I was running after her to collect the car key when she suddenly ran out and created a scene. I did not know that she had placed someone outside to attack me.

“Since we have been having issues for the past eight years, she has never run out before. It was the first time. From nowhere, this guy came out. Some young guys in my compound wanted to beat him up, but I called the police; they said they could not come unless the army captain gave them the go ahead. I got in touch with the captain and he sent his troops to my house.”

The government has disclaimed reports that it was represented at the U.S embassy opening which attracted protests leading to the death of 61 Palestinians and injuries to over 2000 others.

Dignitaries at the event
The Presidency has denied that Nigeria was represented at Monday’s official opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem, Israel.
The controversial move to relocate it from Tel Aviv by the President Donald Trump administration has already drawn the ire of Palestinians who carried out a deadly protest during the ceremony thought to have been attended by Nigeria along with dozens of other nations.
But a top Presidency office’s has now distanced Nigeria from the event, saying in Abuja on Tuesday that the country was not represented.
The official who did not want to be named said in a statement distributed to the media: “Nigeria was not present at an event during which the United States officially relocated its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday contrary to media report.”
The source said the Federal Government had written to a foreign medium, Al Jazeera, demanding a retraction of its story that listed Nigeria as one of the countries represented at the event.
The Presidency official disclosed that based on the report, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, queried the Nigerian Ambassador to Israel to explain his presence at the event.
The Presidency said: “Based on that report, the minister queried the ambassador to explain why he attended the event.

“The ambassador has since replied that he was not at the event.

“It was on the strength of the ambassador’s response that the Federal Government wrote to Al Jazeera to retract its story.”
The embassy opening took place amid road closures and heavy police presence in anticipation of Palestinian protests, as well as deadly demonstrations in Gaza calling for the refugees’ right to return to the homes they were forcibly expelled from 70 years ago.
Trump had promised during his campaign that he would recognize Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel and relocate the US embassy to the city.
In December 2017, he fulfilled the first part of that campaign promise by declaring Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in line with the wish of Israel.
On Monday, Trump said via a video message to the ceremony: “Today we follow through on this recognition and open our embassy in the historic and sacred land of Jerusalem, and we’re opening it many, many years ahead of schedule.”

Following threats from ex-PDP members who decamped to the APC, the Governor of Kaduna state has reiterated that Buhari does not need them to win in 2019.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has dismissed the fears that Buhari’s electoral value would diminish if the aggrieved members of the nPDP pull out of the ruling All Progressives Congress government.

In an interview with State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, El-Rufai said President Buhari would be re-elected, with or without the threatening former PDP members.

“I don’t agree and I want to go back to 2003. What are we talking about? Who are these new PDP people that are threatening? This is Kwara, Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Rivers but I don’t think Amaechi is part of them.

“So let’s take these four states, go back to 2003 and check. Buhari then under ANPP won in all these four states. Go back to 2007, Buhari won in these four states. Even when Shakarau was running as a presidential candidate in 2011, Buhari defeated him in Kano.

“And, I have no doubt in my mind that even if the people threatening to leave, leave, it will have absolutely no impact on the presidential elections, the president will win Sokoto, Kwara and Adamawa easily.

“Kano is already in the bag, I mean if you saw the crowd that welcome the president without the former governor Kwankwaso, Kano has always been the president’s base.

“To me that is not the issue, the issue is that they have written, they have expressed grievances, some of the grievances are legitimate and should be looked into.

“But to threaten to leave the party is neither here nor there. If they are honest with themselves they know that President Buhari will win those states with or without them.’’

El-Rufa’i visited the State House on Tuesday to update President Buhari on the outcome of last Saturday’s Local Government elections in his state and the use of electronic voting system during the exercise.

It was the first time a state adopted the use of electronic machines to conduct elections in Nigeria.

El-Rufa’i told journalists that he also used the opportunity to welcome the president from his recent trips to America and London.

The governor recommended the adoption of e-voting in future elections at both federal and state levels as a panacea to election frauds in the country.

He expressed the readiness of the Kaduna state government to give out the machines on mutually acceptable terms to those state governments that were yet to conduct local government elections in their states.

“Absolutely, I recommend it highly to everyone, I have already offered to my colleagues state governors that are yet to conduct local government elections that they can come to Kaduna and we can give them the machines on mutually acceptable terms.

“All you will need is to change the software, it will have the logo of the state and the number of parties active in the state, they can use it. It is easy.

“At federal level, I will recommend it as well because with the card reader and the electronic voting machine, the era of rigging elections is almost over and I think that is when people will have confidence in the process and will come out enmass to vote for their leaders.

“Having said that, I know we have been working on this for about one year before we got to where we are. Although it is possible for INEC to do it, it will be logistically difficult.

“But nothing stops them from trying if the resources are available. Because, the machines have already been manufactured, the designs are there, you only need to place the orders to the Chinese and I’m sure they will deliver them in no time.’’

El-Rufa’i also dismissed the assertion that the use of e-voting was against the Electoral Act, saying that, “I don’t agree with that”.

“There is an amendment to the Electoral Act that President Jonathan signed a few days before he left office which legitimizes the use of the card reader and other electronic systems for voting.

“So, in my view the current Electoral Act has provision for the electoral voting.

“But, that is not even what we used in Kaduna. In Kaduna, we enacted our own electoral law that made provision for the electronic voting machine and card reader, everything was totally legitimized and passed by our State House of Assembly and I think every state can do the same,” he said.

He added that the current legal framework allowed the use of electronic voting machines.

Oba Alabi said: “It was a terrible experience; my palace is very close to the bank. It was terrifying, it was like a warfront. They kept detonating grenades during the attack.

“I was in the palace during the robbery (and) the attack happened less than a hour after a bullion van delivered cash to the bank.

“We have been in touch with the governor and the state Police Command.”

The main opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party is shopping for a popular candidate who will represent the party at the 2019 presidential election.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering the option of fielding a serving governor as its presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections.

PDP chieftains who spoke with a Daily Trust correspondent, yesterday, explained that the party needed someone who would be covered by executive immunity till May 29, 2019.

‎A former member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) who preferred anonymity said the party was exploring several other options as well but that getting a saleable serving governor would reduce a lot of stress.

‎”You can’t rule out the possibility of the PDP fielding a serving governor but we are being painstaking in the process of selecting our presidential candidate,”he said.

“The overall objective is to get that person that can defeat President Buhari; someone who will not be arrested later for alleged corruption. So we are exploring several options, including fielding a serving governor from the North,” he said.

‎Our correspondent reports that the PDP has only two serving governors from the North, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State who is rounding off his second term and Darius Ishaku of Taraba State who is in his first term.

The PDP had zoned its presidential ticket to the North even as some sources said its searchlight for a credible candidate would go beyond party affiliation.

A source said Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State is also being considered for the ticket on grounds of his youthful age and immunity.

Tambuwal is still in the All Progressives Congress (APC) but insiders say PDP leaders were mounting pressure on him to return, banking on the grievances of the nPDP members within the APC.

The PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan in a text message on whether the party was shopping for a serving governors said, “PDP is open and our party will create the requisite enabling environment for all aspirants seeking to be president on the platform of our party.”

‎A founding member of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yakudima, told a correspondent in a telephone interview that it was better to field someone who would not disappoint Nigerians after winning the polls.

“It is about people who can deliver and especially those who are conversant with the manifesto of the party and the political terrain generally; people who can deliver.
“If you present a governor who is not doing well in the state, for instance, you are more or less creating more problems for the people. If you do that you are doing a disservice to Nigeria,” he said.
