Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the Nigerian senator who was suspended from the senate has vowed to resume next week.
Bukola Saraki and Ovie Omo-Agege

According to Saturday Punch, there are strong indications of a looming showdown at the Senate  on Tuesday as the lawmaker representing the Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, says he will attend the  plenary.

The senator stated this in an interview with Saturday Punch, while reacting to the nullification of his suspension by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

But it was learnt that the Senate had yet to inform security men to allow the Delta Central senator access to the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Saturday Punch had exclusively reported on April 21 that the Senate had ordered security agents to prevent Omo-Agege from entering its chamber.

But the senator said his planned resumption was not based on court nullifying his suspension, because he never believed that a legislature could suspend a member.

Asked if he would resume legislative duties on Tuesday, Omo-Agege said, “Absolutely. I have already told you that I reserve the right to come to sitting anytime. I am coming not because of this judgment but because I have always maintained that they have no right to suspend.

“I did not just take that position. I took that position based on the extant laws which have been pronounced upon by various courts, including the Court of Appeal in Jos concerning the Speaker of Bauchi State House of Assembly.  That is a pronouncement  that can be extended to everyone. I did not even need to go to court to seek a re-validation.

“Be that as it may, I reserve the right to show up anytime to attend plenary, to represent my people, and that right of representation cannot be tampered with by anyone irrespective of the provision.”

Omo-Agege pointed out that only his constituents have the power to remove him from the senatorial seat he is currently occupying.

He said, “I am grateful to God and I give God all the glory. I must tell you that this verdict did not come to me as a surprise because I have always known the law. The law is very clear that no legislature has the powers to suspend anybody (member) for one day. That is the position I have always taken. It was on the basis of that understanding that I went to plenary on the 18th of April.

“From day one, I considered this suspension, unlawful and unconstitutional. What the court has just done is to re-validate that position. Only my constituents – the Urhobo people – have the right to determine whether or not I can be in the Senate; no one else, no matter how highly placed.”

It was, however, gathered the lawmaker might not be allowed to gain access to the Senate.

A source in the Senate, who confided in Saturday Punch, stated, “We have yet to inform the security agents and he will not be allowed to enter the senate until the judgment is discussed at the plenary.”

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, had on Thursday told one of our correspondents that the lawmakers  had yet to be formally informed about the judgment.

today to his beautiful girlfriend, Gifty Mawunya in Accra, Ghana.
John Dumelo and his fiancee, Gifty Mawunya

Actor John Dumelo, according to reports, is set to marry his long-time secret girlfriend this weekend, somewhere around Spintex in Accra.

John Dumelo will, reports say, hold a traditional ceremony at the residence of his fiancée, Mawunya, at Spintex this weekend and has invited very close friends and family.

Mawunya is a close friend of popular actress, Nadia Buari, who is suspected to have midwifed the relationship.

Tittle-tattles also has it that Dumelo is very busy preparing for the D-day, the reason he’s been less active on social media, lately.

A check on Dumelo’s Instagram page reveals he hasn’t updated his page since April 30, something which is unlike the actor cum businessman.

This time around, the marriage thing appears to be true.

Some months ago, the actor posted a finger of a woman on Instagram supposed to be his fiancée with a ring on her finger with the caption ‘She said Yes’ only for it to emerge later that it actually was the fiancée of his friend Frederick Nuamah who proposed to his girlfriend on a plane.

One shot dead, two wounded and nine arrested after violence broke out during APC local government congress in Lagos.

A member of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos has been shot dead at the party’s local government congress on Agege, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The member, identified as Nurudeen Olanose, was allegedly shot at Central School, Dopemu, during a fracas that ensued after voting had ended on Saturday.

Two others are in critical condition while nine people have been arrested and taken to Area G Police Division in Agege.

When contacted, Chike Oti, the Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, said “I’ll get back to you.”

There are different accounts of what led to the shooting at the congress venue in Agege.

A witness told PREMIUM TIMES that violence broke out after Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, visited the venue.

“Obasa came to the venue at Dopemu, from nowhere a gunshot killed one of the party members. As he was going, his security men just dragged the guy that was shot, they dropped him on the other side of the road in order for him to pass and run away,” said the witness, who declined to be named for “political reasons”.

“Not quite 10 minutes later, another person was shot (dead) by Obasa’s boys again, and one other person was shot by the leg.”

Musibau Razak, the spokesperson for the Lagos Speaker, said his principal did not attend the congress at Dopemu.

“It is a lie,” Mr Razak told PREMIUM TIMES.

“From my investigation, it is the APC local government congress in Agege and those who were supposed to be at the congress venue were there, they did their congress and left. But you know in politics, there will always be disgruntled elements, I think that was what happened.

“What happened at Dopemo had nothing to do with my boss.

“Of course, as a member of APC and a Speaker, if anything happens he will be contacted and he will make necessary arrangement for peace to reign. Policemen were there, SSS were there, the INEC was there, so nobody should link that thing to the Speaker. The Speaker’s effort is to maintain peace.”

Rotimi Sulyman, Media Adviser to Ganiyu Egunjobi, the Chairman of Agege local government, said one person died from the violence.

He also said that Mr Obasa was “nowhere near” the congress venue.

“After the election has been concluded, some people who felt they are fast losing the grip of the party, they started fomenting trouble and in the course of it one of the persons loyal to our camp died,” Mr Sulyman told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr Sulyman said those arrested by the police included one Bosun Adigun, a driver to Jubril Kareem, the former chairman of Agege local government.

A family house has been reportedly set ablaze by a small phone charger after the device exploded in the building.
The family were forced to flee their home after a £1 phone charger from a discount store overheated, causing a blaze. (Picture: Bournemouth Daily Echo/BNPS)
A mother and her three children were forced to flee their home after a £1 phone charger from a discount store overheated, causing a blaze.
Firefighters were called to their flat in Bournemouth, Dorset, on Monday night when flames began became visible from the property. Residents of the block were evacuated as crews from three Bournemouth fire stations battled the blaze.
No one was injured but the source of the fire is believed to be a cheap phone charger, which was plugged in at the time.
Donna Burton was settling down with her three children, aged 11, 12 and 18 to watch Britain’s got Talent on Monday evening when she noticed the smell of burning coming from her one son’s beds.
After investigating, she noticed the charger had become so hot that a hole had been burnt into the duvet cover.
She quickly unplugged the charger and returned to the living room but the family then spotted a ‘bright orange glow’ and realised the room was on fire. Donna said: ‘My son was charging his phone with a USB charger from a discount shop.

‘He’d plugged it in and then put his phone on the bed. We were watching Britain’s Got Talent together and then I noticed a smell of smouldering.

‘The charger had become so hot it had burned a hole through the duvet cover..’

‘It wasn’t an electrical problem – it was the charger. I wanted to warn people that this could happen to them. It could have been ten times worse.’
Firefighters were called to their flat in Bournemouth, Dorset, on Monday night when flames began became visible from the property. (Picture: Bournemouth Daily Echo/BNPS)
The fire was attended by fire crews from three different stations, and fire authorities have warned people against using cheap, untested chargers.
Station manager Ant Bholah of the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘The most likely cause of this fire was a mobile phone left charging on the bed.

‘It appears as though the charger, which was not an official manufacturer model, overheated and this led to the bedding catching alight.

‘We would strongly recommend that people avoid using cheap chargers, and never leave an electrical item to charge on top of anything that is easily combustible, such as the bed.’
Although it can be cheaper to buy imported, unofficial chargers, fake mobile phone chargers are often made with poor quality components that fail to meet UK safety regulations. This means they can cause injury, electric shocks and even fires.
Members of the public are urged to follow instructions for all electrical devices and use the correct chargers in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.
Phone chargers also shouldn’t be left plugged in overnight as they can overheat. Phones left charging on soft furnishings and phones covered up as they charge are particularly likely to cause problems.

A man has caused a serious stir on social media after it was revealed that he approached a police station with rats whom he alleged ate up his money.
The man displaying the rats
There was drama at Kotido Central Police Station on Thursday when a local businessman stormed the station to file a complaint against Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for allowing rats to destroy his money.

Peter Lojok Longolangiro, resident of Kotidany village in Kotido Sub County paraded five rats at the station he accused of destroying Shillings 396, 000 he had kept in a box.

According to Dispatch Uganda He also tendered in damaged notes, which he says were eaten by the same rats as exhibits. Longolangiro claims that the wild rats, which are part of the protected species by UWA, intruded into his house and entered the box where he had stored his cash.
ng from the complainant, police referred Longolangiro to the Resident State Attorney for expert advice on the case.

Alphonse Ojangole, the Kotido District Police Commander told URN he had never come across such a case in his 12- year of service with the Police Force.

The Kotido Resident State Attorney, Anthony Obwonyo Jabwor, says the case lacks merit, saying it should only teach people, especially the business community to bank their money.

However, Longolangiro insists that UWA should pay for the damage caused by the wild rats. The father of ten children says it’s the tenth time; wild animals have destroyed his property without any compensation.

He notes that last year, he lost all his crops to elephants and other wildlife and nothing was done by UWA. Walter Odokorach, a Community warden in Kidepo wildlife reserve, says it’s unfortunate that Longolangiro has lost his savings to the rats.

He however notes that UWA can’t be liable for such actions especially by rats in the house. Two banks namely Centenary Rural Development bank and Stanbic bank operate in Kotido.

However, like most of the pastoralists, people in Karamoja prefer moving with their money or keeping it in their Manyattas.

A young lady has helped her brother to publicly propose to his girlfriend during her own wedding reception.

The bride was about to toss the bouquet backwards but did not

A selfless bride faked the bouquet toss on her wedding day in order to help her brother propose to his girlfriend.

According to Daily Mail UK, the bride, who is known only as Amy and hails from Alabama, looked like she was getting ready to throw her bouquet to a group of female guests assembled close by.

However, instead of throwing the pretty floral arrangement, the bride waited for the crowd to count down from three, before turning around and walking over to her brother's girlfriend.

Dressed in a pale peach frock and almost looking bridal herself, when Amy reached her, she handed her the bouquet to the woman's delight.

She turned around and handed the bouquet to her brother's girlfriend

While the wedding guest laughed and looked confused at first, her amusement turned to shock as her boyfriend (the bride's brother) appeared before her.

He then started to fish something out of his pocket as the crowd of wedding guests behind them also looked on in shock, confused about what was going on.

However, as his girlfriend - still holding the bouquet - started to realize what was happening, she began to cry as her boyfriend got down on one knee to propose.

In the video featured on Hoda's Morning Boost during this morning's Today show, wedding goers can be heard shrieking and cheering in the background as the woman can be seen nodding her head in agreement while wiping away tears, and the other wedding guests saw what was happening.

Speaking to Today, the bride Amy shared: 'I got married and my brother got engaged, this was the most special day of my life.'

The young man then came forward and proposed

The tradition of throwing the bouquet started in medieval times after wedding guests believed grabbing a piece of the bride would bring them luck.

Traditionally, the bride only threw the bouquet to try to distract the crowd from ripping at her wedding dress, but in modern times, throwing the bouquet has turned into a fun wedding tradition.

It usually involves the bride throwing her wedding flowers to her bridesmaids and assembled female wedding guests.

Catching the bouquet is believed to bring good fortune and luck in love.

One of the Offa robbery suspects has been nabbed by the police after he reportedly sneaked into a hotel in Kwara.
The suspects were caught on camera

A report by the New Telegraph has shown that a serving policeman identified simply as Isiaka (surname withheld) is among the principal suspects being held for the Offa robbery in Kwara State on April 5.

It was learnt that the suspect, who is a native of Ilorin, the state capital, is a sergeant and was among the first set of suspects arrested over the incident and had remained in detention since then.

A source, who is privy to the investigation, told New Telegraph that the suspect is still being held“because investigators believe he had more to say.”

“He is among the eight people that have now been confirmed to have more to say over the robbery, out of the initial 12 that were arrested around Offa and Ilorin. You will recall that eight suspects were initially arrested and in line with our mandate, we profiled them so as to ascertain the level of involvement of each suspect.

“So far, we have every reason to believe he has more to tell us beyond what he had said. It is for this reason we are still keeping him,” the source said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the former police constable, Michael Adikwu, who was arrested over the bloody incident in had actually vowed to kill many policemen, following his dismissal from the state command.

Sources within the command who were familiar with his case revealed during the week that Adikwu was actually on a revenge mission over his dismissal, a probable reason for the high number of policemen that were killed during the operation. Nine policemen were among the about 30 victims of the robberry, which shook the entire nation over its barbaric execution. Adikwu had been dismissed after an orderly room trial found him guilty of complicity in the escape of some robbery suspects from detention.

He was subsequently tried in court and sentenced to three years imprisonment. “I knew him then, and I know that when he was dismissed for aiding the escape of some robbery suspects he did actually vow that he will kill many policemen”, one officer confided in our reporter in Ilorin yesterday.”

Asked for details on how the robbery kingpin was nabbed, another source confirmed that Adikwu had sneaked into a hotel (name withheld) around Niger/Muritala area of Ilorin on Monday night to enjoy himself.

“He came alone and we still wonder at the effrontery so soon after the robbery. He didn’t know that he would be recognised but you remember the CP had informed the public to assist. So, it was somebody who had seen his picture and saw him entering the hotel that gave the hint and our men moved in that same night. He was an easy target.”

“It was easy to identify him because he had pulled off his face mask once they entered the bank, not knowing that another CCTV was still recording their activities as they were ransacking drawers in one of the banks.”

He led investigators from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to two other members of his gang.

Meanwhile, a visit to the command headquarters during the week indicated that security had been reinforced around the SARS office where some of the suspects are still being detained. Police commissioner for Kwara State, Aminu Pai Saleh, had on assumption of duty in the state revealed that hoteliers were assisting the police in tracking the robbers.

The proprietor of a hotel where the armed robbers allegedly spent the night before the operation has been arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court along with the hotel’s accountant, a receptionist, a room keeper and a club house operator as well as four lodgers who were staying in the hotel at the time the suspected robbers also allegedly lodged there.

A man who was hurriedly buried by his reverend sister daughter inside a shallow grave, has been dug up by villagers.

The man's dead body was dug up

Angry youths had to dig up the corpse of a man after a Reverend sister; Maria Amadeus Egbuonu buried her (Chief David Egbuonu) against the wishes of the community – in a grave in Uruagu village, Dunukofia local government area of Anambra state.

Below is a report on the matter as shared by Morningstar Political Moment Matters Reporters (sic).

REV SISTER MARIA AMADEUS EGBUONU SECRETLY BURIED  FATHER (CHIEF DAVID ANUMBA EGBUONU) IN A SHALLOW GRAVE IN URUAGU VILLAGE, UMUDIOKA, DUNUKOFIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ANAMBRA STATE.

THE genesis of the problem in Chief David Anumba Egbuonu's family, Uruagu Village Umudioka.

Chief David Anumba Egbuonu was born in the year 1912, to family of Mr Egbuonu of Umuobii Kindred,Uruagu village of Adagbe quarters in Umudioka acient kingdom of Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State. Chief Anumba Egbuonu was a business man to the core and industrialist, with his insight into business, it made him to travel to different African countries for business investments and towards his retirement age, he settled down at the great commercial city of Onitsha, in Anambra State.

Chief David Anumba Egbuonu was a Christian and because of his love for tradition, he bagged a prestigious Ozo title in Umudioka cum Dunukofia, with a title name, EZEUGO NA UMUDIOKA.

Chief David Anumba Egbuonu married five (5) wives. He was blessed with five (5) sons , whom are, Chief David N Egbuonu(Jnr), Mr osita Egbuonu (late), Rev. Canon Iyke Egbuonu, Mr ugochukwu Egbuonu, Mr Moses Egbuonu and twelve (12) daughters, which includes Rev. Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu. He died at August, 2017.

From our findings and interviews from family members, Kindred members and villagers, we deduced that, the second wife and the mother to Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu and also being the mother of the fourth son (Mr Ugochukwu Egbuonu) of the family are laying claims on the properties of Chief David Egbuonu as the only legal family, he has. From our interviews and investigation, it was gathered, that the family of the second wife forged a Will on 2013, which allocated all the properties of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu to them, which are located both in Umudioka, Onitsha and Chad, even the second surviving wife, Mrs Joy Egbuonu was not mentioned in the will.

The room where the man was buried

We also learnt that the Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu, her brother Ugochukwu and two of her sisters Felicia and Catherine Egbuonu (from the second wife) got a share from the ancestral land of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu, without any of their siblings from other wives gotten any share. From our investigation, it shows that Mr Ugochukwu Egbuonu(the fourth son, from the second wife) is laying claim on the OBI(Ancestral home) of Chief David Egbuonu . We interviewed an elder from Uruagu village, to know whom the OBI(Ancestral home) belongs to, he said, that traditionally and ethically, the OBI(Ancestral home), belongs to the first son of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu not the fourth son, no matter any circumstances,or it will be a sacrilege.

We tried to find out, why the Rev Sister Maria Egbuonu and her immediate family were laying claims on the said properties, we found out that immediately after the death of the first wife, who happens to be the mother of the the eldest son in the family, Chief David N Egbuonu Jnr,the Rev Sister Maria Egbuonu and her mother took over the feeding of their aged father, and with the opportunity, all the manipulations started and Rev Sister Maria Amadeus Egbuonu blocked other children of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu access to their father, when he was under her care.

The family members of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu, said that, they were informed of their father's death around November 2017 while their father died in August that year. When they looked into the discrepancy in the time of informing them of their father's death, they found out that, it was done intentionally, so that it will give Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu, time to sell most of their father's properties and allocate Chief Egbuonu's ancestral lands to her sisters and brother.

It was gathered that, Rev Fr Oguejiofor being the peace loving priest, called a general meeting of all Chief David Anumba Egbuonu family and diverged into the case to settle the family crisis, but Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu rejected all the peace accord by Rev Fr Oguejiofor. Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu was of the view, that her immediate family is the only legal family of Chief David Anumba Egbuonu.

Then Umuobi kindred of Uruagu village tried to sue for peace, by condeming the claims being done by Mr Ugochukwu Egbuonu (fourth son) of the second wife as the legal owner of OBI(Ancestral home), and the Kindred mandated Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu to surrender all the properties of Chief David Egbuonu to the family members for proper and equal share, but the kindred peace accord fell on the deaf ear side of Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu.

After all the peace accord meetings, that failed, the other children of the other four wives decided to seek a redress from the court of law. They sued Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu and brother to the court and got an injunction that no one should enter or trespass on any of the Chief David Anumba Egbuonu's properties or even bury him, pending the final judgment.

It was also gathered that Chief David N Egbuonu Jnr, the first and eldest son has been threatened to be killed so many times, through calls and text messages, regarding his stand that peace must reign before the burial of their father.

The family got a wind of information that, Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu ,the brother and sisters are planning to bring back the corpse of their father home for burial on 8th May, 2018 without the consent of other four families. The family paid for announcement on the evening of 7th May, 2018 round the villages of umudioka and to the parish priest of St Anthony Catholic church, umudioka , that they have not settled their matter in the law court, and that after the settlement, they will announce to the town the actual date for the burial as agreed by the general family through the eldest son.

To the family's utmost suprise, Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu, Felicia and Catherine Egbuonu in the company of two other Rev sisters from Immaculate Heart of Mary, Awo Omamma, Owerri Archdioceses, with fully armed MASSOB thugs, drove in on 8th of May, 2018 at the hours of 3am mid night and buried Chief David Anumba Egbuonu in a shallow grave inside a room.

The villagers were watching the abominable act, but they couldn't stop them because of fear of being attacked by the armed MASSOB thugs, that came with Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu. Immediately they left ,after burying the corpse in the shallow grave inside a room, the villagers and some people around, started shouting and the angry youths dug out the casket before the arrival of the Chief David N. Egbuonu Jnr, from onitsha, who happens to be the first and the eldest son and Rev Canon Iyke Egbuonu. After calming the angry youths, they returned the corpse, back to the mortuary.

An interview was conducted with a chieftain in the community, to ascertain whether the action of Rev Sister Maria Amadeus Egbuonu was good, the Chief decried her act and labelled it as abomination and sacrilegious and demanded for immediate cleansing (Ikpo Alu) . Another person, was interviewed, he suggested that he was of the opinion that the Catholic Church should strip Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu of her sisterhood, because her actions was against the custom of the land and an insult to the Catholic Church in general. A group of youths were interview also, they demanded the immediate banning of Rev Sister Maria Egbuonu and her siblings from the community and demanded the immediate cleansing of their land to avoid any calamity befalling their land. From further enquiries it was gathered that, the Archbishop of Onitsha Archdioceses, Archbishop Valerian Okeke condemned the the method, the Reverend Sister, handled the matter.

It was gathered that Uruagu Village has mandated the family to perform immediate cleansing, that the action of Rev Sister Maria Amadeus Egbuonu was sacrilegious and abominable and are still on deliberation on the sanctions that will be imposed on the said Reverend Sister and her immediate family for their actions.

In Umudioka custom and tradition, it is a taboo for a woman to bury the dead, and without the consent of the dead man's family.
Umudioka community are calling on the authorities of the Catholic Church such as,The Archbishop of owerri diocese, the Mother General of Immaculate Heart Congregation Awo Omamma Owerri Archdioceses, the Mother Union of Catholic churches, Catholic Priests Association from Umudioka, the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese to issue a serious sanctions on Rev Sis Maria Amadeus Egbuonu, till she settles peacefully with her family members.

The wife of a Nigerian pastor has been dragged out to the open as a cheat after she allegedly slept with a church Deacon and a bishop.
File photo. A pastor

According to  report by Punch Metro, the wife of a pastor, Mrs. Uzoamaka Ibeneme, on Friday, was exposed by her husband and lost her 21-year-old marriage, when an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, dissolved the union on grounds of adultery.

Mr. Akin Akinniyi, the court president, who delivered the judgment, said the petitioner, Pastor Joshua Ibeneme was adamant in spite of the mediation by the court and family intervention.

“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court is, therefore, left with no option but to grant him his wish and pronounce the union dissolved.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Pastor Joshua Ibeneme and Mrs. Uzoamaka Ibeneme dissolved today.

“Both of you will henceforth cease to be husband and wife, each of you should go on his or her separate ways unmolested.

“The court wishes both of you well in your future endeavour.

“Any squabble between both you from now on shall be treated as criminal and any violation of this judgment will be regarded as contempt of court and will attract imprisonment without an option of fine,”Akinniyi ruled.

Earlier, the petitioner, a 53-year-old pastor, Joshua Ibeneme, had approached the court to end his 21-year  marriage to his wife, Uzoamaka, who he said, was messing around with his church members.

“My wife had s*xual affair with two of my church members, a deacon and a bishop. Both of them were telling my other members that they slept with my wife because she enticed them.

“Whenever I return from a trip, my last born always tells me that men came to pick and drop my wife. Even God told me to divorce her else she will destroy my ministry,” he claimed.

The petitioner said that his wife denied him sex for five years.

“My wife starved me of s*x for more than five years; whenever I want to sleep with her, she would give one excuse or the other and in fact, she has moved out of my room to a separate room.

“But she gives it to my members freely,” the pastor said.

The pastor said that his wife was always mocking and embarrassing him in public places, telling people about his sexual performance.

He said that Uzoamaka always accused him of having affairs with any female member, who came to the house for counselling.

“She accused them of dating me and also went to their houses to fight them. Her behaviour has chased many members away from my church,” he said.

He begged the court to divorce the loveless union, claiming he was no longer in love with his wife.

However, the respondent, Uzoamaka, denied having s*x with their church members but accused her husband of infidelity.

“It is women that cause our frequent fighting, they are the problem in our home and my husband’s lust for them is very high.

“I never slept with the two men, who claimed that they slept with me, they just wanted to tarnish my image, my husband is dating the wife of the deacon.”

According to her, the pastor calls her derogatory names in the public such as “prostitute”.

The 45-year-old teacher said that she starved her husband of s*x because she hated s*x, adding that she married him because she wanted children.

The mother of three, however, begged the court not to grant her husband’s wish for dissolution of the marriage as she was still in love with him.

Some hoodlums have reportedly stormed the APC secretariat in Imo State, setting the place on fire.

The political tension in the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress deepened on Friday when unidentified hoodlums set the party secretariat on fire, Punch Meto reports.

Though the fire didn’t affect the external parts of the building, the internal parts were engulfed in inferno.

Punch Metro which visited the secretariat located at the Imo State University junction in Owerri around 6:30pm amidst downpour, saw the secretariat engulfed in smoke.

Though no member of staff was sighted, people watched from afar as the smoke surged.

It was learnt that secretarial equipment, including files and documents, were destroyed.

No firefighter was seen on ground, neither did anybody make efforts to fight the fire.

When contacted, the state party chairman, Hilary Eke, who confirmed the development, accused those who he said attacked the party state office last weekend.

Eke, who said that the unidentified hoodlums attacked the secretariat “just to frustrate the Local Government Areas congress of the party on Saturday”, vowed that the exercise must go on.

He insisted that the contentious ward congress of the party was successful, urging those “who lost during the last weekend exercise to give peace a chance.”

“I have been in a meeting ahead of the LGA congress of the party in Imo State.

“Those who attacked the secretariat the other Saturday are likely to be the same people who set it on fire on Friday (today).

“Despite the provocation, the LGA congress must go on on Saturday.

“We have already elected five-man per ward during the ward congress. The congress does not take place at party sSecretariat, it will take place in the 27 LGAs of the state on Saturday.

“I  petitioned the Inspector General of Police over the attack on the Secretariat the other Saturday.

“My duty is to report to the Police and the Police have the duty to investigate.

“So, members of staff identified those who attacked it.“

A soldier who used to drive President Muhammadu Buhari way back in the day has revealed some things about the man.
Corporal Tumba Garba (retd.)

When Corporal Tumba Garba (retd.) joined the Nigerian Army on July 21, 1965, two years before the start of the civil war, he had no idea he would become a driver to the top brass in the military, some of whom later went on to become the country’s heads of state.

Sharing his memories in the military with Saturday Punch, Garba, who is father of Senator Binta Masi Garba, representing Adamawa North District in the National Assembly, said with pride that there was virtually no important personality in the military that he didn’t drive.

“I fought in the civil war. Our division was stationed in Enugu. Two years after the war ended, my division returned to Kaduna. Later that year, after our division returned to Kaduna, I was appointed a standby driver attached to the fleet for all foreign dignitaries.

“I drove every important foreign dignitary. I drove almost all the top-ranking military officers of that era also. There was no important personality that I didn’t drive.

“I drove former President Olusegun Obasanjo. I also drove late General Murtala Mohammed, General Sani Abacha, General Jeremiah Useni (retd.), and Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.) when he was the Chief of Staff. I also drove General M.B. Haruna and even General Paul Tarfa (retd.),” Garba said.

Since 1942 when he obtained his driving licence, Garba said he was happy that none of the vehicles assigned to him was involved in any accident even until 1985 when he left the military.

Garba also narrated how he drove President Muhammadu Buhari as a colonel in the Nigerian Army.

“He was the General Officer Commanding Zone 3 before he became the director of Supply and Transport. I drove him when he was the director of military supply and transport,” he said.

Speaking of his knowledge of Buhari, Garba said, “Buhari is one person who cares for your welfare. He wouldn’t cheat. The Buhari I know would take hours to finish a bottle of soft drink. One bottle of soft drink was too much for him to finish in five hours.

“He abhors corruption and is also a man of few words, who rarely speaks. He hates cheating. I also know he served in different capacities and went for several courses in the army before he Became the governor of the North-East; Minister of Petroleum; and General Officer Commanding 3 Division in Jos, from where he went on to become the military head of state, after the coup that overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari.”

Following the overthrow of the Shehu Shagari regime, Garba said he felt happy for Buhari, but was sad  that he never had the opportunity of seeing him again – until 2015 when he became a civilian President.

He said, “I decided I wanted to see him after failed attempts in the past to see him as a military man. But my daughter, who is now a serving senator questioned my curiosity. She wanted to know my relationship with Buhari. I simply replied, ‘I was once his driver.’ Many people asked me the same question when Binta was taking me to meet with the President.

“Eventually, I saw him. We hugged each other and took pictures. I sat close to him and he felt very happy. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Buhari told me, ‘Garba, it’s been long. It’s good to see you after all this while.’”

Asked if he had ever imagined that his daughter would become a senator someday, Garba replied, “Well, there is an adage in Hausa that says that a good Friday is noticeable on Thursday. There’s one important incident I would never forget. When she was in school, quite young then, the Kaduna State handball team had featured her in a handball competition.

“Immediately she reached home, she handed over all the money she got from the competition to me. She did not take even N1 from it. She often said, ‘Daddy, take it’. She has continued to behave that way till date such that her mother even envies her closeness to me, saying she’s my favourite child. When she finished school, the New Nigeria Newspapers employed her and she worked with them and from there, she joined politics. I didn’t know she would become what she is today.”

As the father of the only female member of the senate from the north, Garba said he always felt happy, disclosing that one of the things he had always told himself was that since he didn’t have an opportunity to have Western education, he would invest all he had to give all his children good education.

“My maternal grandfather had withdrawn me from the school I was attending in Mubi. It was later in life that I obtained adult education. Consequently, I was able to read and write my name,” he said.

Disclosing that he had a special relationship with his senator daughter, Garba said the singular act of always thinking about others distinguished her from her siblings.

“She is also likeable and doesn’t discriminate,” he said.

Recently when he met with the Muslim Council from Adamawa North Senatorial District and wept, the retired military officer said he had done so based on what was said about her daughter.

He said, “I later realised this is nothing but politics. I was among those who began politics in northern Nigeria with the Sardauna of Sokoto. Politics during the time of Sardauna was different from the politics as we see it today. In those days, there was no division or discrimination whether you were a pagan, Muslim or Christian. Even though pagans formed a large part of the population, yet Sardauna regarded all as the same.

“I compared the type of politics played then and what is practised today. I then concluded it was important to reach out to the Muslim Council because of the statements being attributed to Binta; I did that just to set the records straight and tell them that Sardauna never played this kind of politics. Today, Saurduana will be rolling in his grave to see the kind of politics being played in the north.

“So, I decided to invite the leaders of the Muslim faith from the five local governments – Mubi South, Mubi North, Maiha, Madagali and Michika – to let them know I do not have any problem with Binta. And that Binta will never insult Islam; that everything being said about her is false.

“I don’t have any problem with my children, including their mothers. It was unfortunate that something like this happened. Binta never intended to insult Islam. Our family by history is a very tolerant one and it has coexisted with everyone and allowed anyone to practise their faith.”

The senator had in April narrated during her 50th birthday how her properties were set ablaze by her father after she became a Christian while she was in primary school.

“My father was infuriated and he burnt everything I had because of my decision to follow Christ. I suffered so much because of the name of Jesus. I would have been nothing if not for His grace,” she had stated.

Asked if her daughter’s narration was untrue, Garba said he wept when he heard about the report initially, but later stopped weeping, saying he realised it was purely about politics.

He said, “There’s no difference between Binta and me. Look at the SUV she bought for me; when I complained that it was too high for me to climb, she got me a Mercedes-Benz that’s easier for me to climb. Every year, she sponsors all of us to Mecca.

“Every year, I must go to Mecca. It was only the last Hajj that I didn’t go as a result of old age. I also tell her not to discriminate against anyone and she has listened to my advice. Binta does not discriminate.

“When she wanted to marry a Christian, she told me she had found a fiancé who’s a Christian and I asked her, ‘Binta, how can you marry a Christian and become a Christian?’ She replied, ‘That is what I want.’ I allowed her and gave her my blessing. She married him and became a Christian.”

Asked how his father, who was a Christian, also reacted when he too decided to convert to Islam, Garba shared, “When I told him I had embraced Islam, he said if that was what I wanted, he had no problem with it.

“I told him, ‘Papa, I don’t understand your religion. You do not practise your religion because as for me, you don’t have a religion yet. As for me, I have joined Islam, the right faith of Allah. He allowed me and did not protest. He then told me to go, saying God would be with me.”

Garba said he was always surprised at the level of religious intolerance in the country today, particularly in the north, saying, “I worked closely with the late Sardauna of Sokoto. I drove his Minister of Works. The late Sardauna did not discriminate; he never gave preference to anyone because of their faith. Sardauna would never force you to convert to Islam.

“To him, there is no compulsion in religion. Anybody willing to become a Muslim at the time, Sardauna would give him money, clothes and prayer beads. During his time, there was no bigotry. But today, we have moved into mixing politics with religion. During the late Sardauna era, there was no tribalism or religious bigotry. This I always tell my daughter, never to discriminate and I thank her for listening.”

Massimiliano Allegri who is an Italian professional football manager and former player currently in charge of Serie A club Juventus could be hired by English club, Arsenal.

Massimiliano Allegri

Arsene Wenger is entering his last week as Gunners boss and the club’s hierarchy have already begun the process of appointing his successor.

According to the UK Independent, Arsenal are conscious of the need for a manager who “galvanises” the fanbase.

Even though some at the club feel they should do what they did with Wenger in 1996 and opt for a promising but lesser known name, there is a feeling the new man must excite the supporters.

Allegri has won three Italian titles in a row and is on the brink of a fourth, but has also taken Juve to two Champions League finals.

Negotiating with the Serie A champions could be tricky, however, although Allegri is said to be considering another challenge and is interested in the job.
