A former aide to Lawal Daura, the sacked director general of State Security Service, has made fresh allegations against the man.
President Muhammadu Buhari

A former assistant to the sacked director general of State Security Service, Lawal Daura, has accused his former principal of extensive corruption, and has portrayed him as a man who serially betrayed his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, for money.

The assistant, Abdulwahab Abdulrahman, a retired senior SSS official, said he left the agency because of the scale of corruption and abuse there.

“I didn’t want my children to see news of my eventual arrest on TV,” he told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr Daura, who led Nigeria’s domestic spy agency since 2015, was abruptly fired on Tuesday by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo after he ordered a siege on the National Assembly.

The siege, which many Nigerians have characterized as a coup d’état, startled a nation that has struggled in the past two weeks to keep pace with rapidly unfolding political stunts ahead of next year’s general elections.

The cordon saw gun-wielding masked men blockading the federal parliament building in central Abuja, denying access to lawmakers and legislative staff. It was lifted several hours later, but only after Mr Daura was summoned by Mr Osinbajo and summarily dismissed. The acting president said the exercise did not receive authorisation.

Many Nigerians believe the move was to facilitate the removal of Bukola Saraki as senate president as punishment for his leaving the ruling APC last week.

But while such plot failed, it helped further galvanize public outrage against Mr Daura, a controversial figure who in the past three years managed to create for himself a notorious label as an outlawed official responsible for illegal detention, clampdown on dissent and disobedience of court orders.

Now, his former associate, Mr Abdulrahman, whom some described as Mr Daura’s former “right-hand man”, has spoken out exclusively to PREMIUM TIMES on what he said was Mr Daura’s darker side Nigerians never knew. Mr Abdulrahman served as special assistant to Mr Daura until 2016.

Besides corruption, he said Mr Daura repeatedly betrayed President Buhari.

Messrs Abdulrahman and Daura were members of the Buhari campaign’s security committee in the buildup to 2015 election. The committee was led by the current Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau.

Mr Abdulrahman said he served as the secretary of the 25-member committee.

“I noticed immediately we started work that for Lawal Daura it is simply about the money,” he said. “In one of earlier meetings he suggested that we should request for one billion to start work. Where will Buhari see one billion to give us?”

PREMIUM TIMES could not independently verify the claim. Mr Daura could not also be reached as he remained in detention Wednesday.

Some of his aides told PREMIUM TIMES Mr Abdulrahaman was bitter after being sacked by Mr Daura, and cautioned his claims be treated with restraint. Mr Abdulrahman denied being sacked; he told this newspaper he left of his own volition.

But while several other sources in the security agency confirmed most of the allegations against Mr Daura, they told PREMIUM TIMES both men worked together for years either for good or for bad till they parted ways in 2016.

Still, they said the revelations, especially with Mr Abdulrahman waiving any claim to anonymity, provide a rare opportunity for Nigerians to get a glimpse of the illicit practices at a security agency that should be one of the nation’s most revered, and how corruption and partisanship have stunted the department’s potential.

Before, after 2015 election

Mr Abdulrahman said in the course of their work and as part of the transition team after Mr Buhari won the election, Mr Daura “kept producing fake reports about (Ita) Ekpenyong (his predecessor), but we never knew what he was targeting,” until late.

He said Mr Daura soon developed the habit of going to Mr Buhari’s influential cousin, Mamman Daura, to report Mr Ekpenyong and give details of what the election committee was doing.

That way, he said Lawal Daura warmed his way into Mamman Daura’s heart. He also said despite coming from the same neighbourhood in Katsina state, Mr Buhari never knew Lawal Daura until 2015.

“He was introduced to the president by the late Senator Mustapha Bukar,” he said.

He also said Mr Daura was never a favourite of President Buhari because of his “antecedents”, suggesting he was somehow imposed on him by Mamman Daura and others close to him.

“When he was appointed he kept putting pressure on me and Maikano, the current AO (admin officer) at the presidential villa to come and work with him as SA. He assured me that what I will get under him, I cannot get even as a Minister,” Mr Abdulrahman said.

Mr Maikano could not be reached to comment on the claim.

Mr Abdulrahman said Mr Daura feared the DG job may not be very easy since he had never worked at the headquarters and was not an operational staff.

“He said he wants the two of us to stabilise the service for him,” he quoted Mr Daura as saying. Mr Abdulrahman said he eventually agreed the offer after much pressure.

He claimed as the work commenced, “Daura was receiving money from everyone including the president’s enemies”.

Mr Abdulrahman said when they resumed, they always closed late at work, often at about 2am. “What are we doing was mostly: receiving Ghana must go filled with cash brought by enemies of government to him,” he said somewhat confirming he was part of whatever happened at the time.

“The rate of corruption on that fourth floor was too much and the president doesn’t deserve this,” he said. “He will go and get information on plans for (Senate president) Bukola (Saraki) and then leak it to him,” he said.

Similar allegation emerged Tuesday after Mr Daura’s removal, with many administration supporters accusing him of working for Mr Saraki against the government. On Wednesday, Mr Saraki said claims he compromised Mr Daura in respect of the National Assembly siege constituted an “insult on the intelligence of Nigerians”.

But the two institutions under Messrs. Saraki and Daura clearly enjoyed cooperation in the past. In the heated days of the National Assembly’s standoff with the executive over the appointment of Ibrahim Magu as head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, it was mostly memos from the SSS that the lawmakers referenced as basis for rejecting Mr Magu.

‘Brazen corruption’

At the SSS, Mr Abdulrahman said Mr Daura operated an repressive administration that stamped on staff rights just as it did on Nigerians’. In all, he said the scale of corruption at the agency was shocking.

Such revelations, PREMIUM TIMES learnt, have already sent ripples across the agency and its sister organisations, with senior officials shuddering at the prospect of investigations after Mr Daura’s dismissal.

In the course of his interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Abdulrahman received multiple phone calls apparently from people appealing he should not yet go public. “I’m sorry sir, I will speak,” he told one caller.

Mr Abdulrahman told this newspaper that at some point agents working for Mr Daura stopped going to the bureau de change to carry out transactions on his behalf. Rather, “they invite the secretary of the bureau de change at that Sheraton (Hotel) gate to come to the office late at night with their counting machines, counting dollars”, he said.

“When I had too much I decided to leave and I swore to the directors who wanted me to stay because of their personal interest that Daura will leave office in handcuffs because of what I saw.

“I was preaching to him that he needs to help Mr President because you know you don’t deserve this office and he appointed you, because of that he stopped my pension for two years until I threaten to go to court,” he said.

On Mr Daura’s career history, Mr Abdulrahman said the former DG was sacked from the SSS originally before his reappointment by Mr Buhari because he was caught siphoning diesel from the SSS Academy in Kaduna.

“Before then, he was almost sacked when he was State Director in Lagos. Tinubu, who was governor donated 20 vehicles to aid the work of the service in the state; Fashola, who is Minister now, was the Chief of Staff at the time, Lawal Daura took all the vehicles to Kano and sold them off,” he claimed.

He also said Mr Daura had to be secretly taken away in Edo state because of how he was misusing staff stipends.

“Just like today, how they had to use the back door to ferry him away, don’t you wonder why he was not taken back to the service facility? He wouldn’t have survived it. I have been receiving calls all day from some of our top directors and staff, everyone is in a joyous mood today.

“In fact a director told me that all his life, he never drank beer, but today, he will drink to celebrate how this service is finally saved from destruction,” he said.

This newspaper did not also independently verify those claims.

Arrogance, disrespect to constituted authority

Mr Abdulrahman also said Mr Daura was too arrogant as DG of SSS.

He said he had no respect for the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, whom he should be reporting to. He also said he never had any respect for the vice president, Mr Osinbajo.

“Whenever the Vice President calls for a meeting for 2 o’clock Daura will come by 3 and will not apologies. There was a time they had serious shouting match with Magu over the disrespect shown to the VP and the VP had to ask Magu to keep quiet,” he said.

Asked what the real issue was between Mr Magu and the DG SSS, Mr Abdulrahman said Mr Daura wanted Mr Magu to share information on high profile cases with him

“Magu is a smart officer and he knew Daura wanted to use such information to extract money from people. He told Daura to his face that I can’t report to you, I only report to the president who appointed me,” he said.

Mr Magu could not be reached Wednesday for comments.

The former SSS official recalled an interesting conversation between a former NSA Sambo Dasuki (who is still in SSS captivity despite court orders) and Mr Daura.

“Sambo Dasuki told Daura to be careful with this world,” he said, adding, “’I was one of the most powerful NSA, see me today. If you are not careful, you may replace me in this room one day’”.

EFCC has disclaimed the view of Akpabio that nothing was found on him by the EFCC which earlier accused him of N108 million fraud.

Senator Godswill Akpabio
The case of alleged fraud involving Senator Godswill Akpabio is not over, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said.
Akpabio had said that he was a man of peace that had no case to answer with the EFCC, adding that the young man who petitioned him before the commission could not prove his case.
“Those petitions to the EFCC have been sorted out. As I stand today, I have not been charged to court because nothing was found against me,” Akpabio said.
However, the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, in a text message while responding to an inquiry made by The PUNCH, insisted that Akpabio’s case was still ongoing.
When asked if Akpabio was still under probe, the EFCC spokesman said, “EFCC does not close cases or give clearance to anybody.”
Akpabio first came under investigation in late 2015 following accusations that he diverted over N100bn from the oil-rich state between 2007 and 2015, an allegation which he has denied.
The EFCC wrote letters to Zenith Bank, Keystone Bank, First City Monument Bank, Skye Bank, and United Bank for Africa demanding information on the state’s accounts.
The anti-graft agency also extended its investigation to the accountant-general, the auditor-general, the Speaker and the clerk of the House of Assembly.
Describing it as a witch-hunt, the Akwa Ibom State Government refused to cooperate with the EFCC and even dragged the commission to court and obtained an interim injunction, restraining the EFCC and other Federal Government agencies from probing the finances of the Akwa Ibom State Government but this was temporary as the judge lifted the injunction months later paving way for full investigations.
The matter was taken to the Appeal Court where it has remained for over a year.
According to an interim report by the EFCC, the former governor allegedly gave a bank N1.4bn for unknown reasons.

A Nigerian university student has reportedly bought himself phones with a fake bank alert before fleeing.
UNILAG

Azeez Bakare, a member of the National Youth Service Corps, has accused a 400-level Computer Science undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Eric Idowu, of absconding with phones valued at N1m, after allegedly purchasing the products with a fake bank alert.

According to Punch Metro, Idowu had on Thursday, August 2, 2018, allegedly used a fake name, Leonard Adegoke, to order for the items from Bakare.

Bakare, 22, said Idowu had remained elusive since the items were delivered to him at his house.

He said, “Apart from being a corps member, I run a mobile phone business. On Thursday, August 2, around 4.30pm, I received a call from a customer, who identified himself as Leonard Adeleke. He ordered for three used iPhone 8 Plus and one brand new iPhone X. The address he gave me was no 20, University Road, Abule-Oja, Yaba, Lagos. I went there to deliver the goods around 7pm the same day.

“When I got there, I followed him to the front of his room where he checked the phones to see if they were working perfectly. After he was convinced, he collected the phones and asked for my account number, which I provided. A minute later, he showed me a debit alert on his phone and said the money had been transferred into my account.

“Both of us waited for me to receive the alert on my phone. While waiting, he said he wanted to go downstairs to turn on his generator. That was the last time I saw him as he ran away. When I searched around and could not find him. I called his telephone number, but it was switched off.”

Bakare, who said he had petitioned the Sabo Police Station on the incident, noted that one Adeleke Adegoke who lived in the house had been arrested.

“Later, I used the True Caller app on my phone to dial the number Leonard Adegoke used in placing his order. The app revealed his picture and real name as Eric Idowu.

“I showed Adeleke, who recognised Idowu from the picture. Adeleke said Idowu used to stay with the landlord’s son but had disappeared,” he added.

Bakare said it was after Adeleke had called the landlord’s son at the station that the police got a detailed information on Idowu, who was said to be an undergraduate at the University of Lagos.

“I also went to the Computer Village in Ikeja to meet with officials of the phone company because they had reported the case to SARS. I later wrote that the case should be transferred from the Sabo Police Station to SARS.

“I have informed my parents about this case. Till now, I have not paid for the phones, which I got on credit from a phone company, CSE Phones. I want the police to help me get Idowu. I want my goods back or my money and the extra cost I have spent to recover them,” he added.

An official of CSE Phones, Chris Amaru, said his boss, Chuks Mba had ordered him to petition SARS for quick action regarding the matter.

He said, “Bakare is a known person to the company because we do give him goods on credit and after sales, he gives us the money.

“So when the incident happened, Mr Mba assigned me to report the case at SARS office in Ikeja.”

Our correspondent called the spokesperson for University of Lagos, Mrs Taiwo Oloyede, to confirm if Eric Idowu was a student at the institution, but she said it would be preferable if the police visited the institution to find out about the suspect.

Oloyede said, “Let the police come to the student affairs division to find out about the boy. I will prefer that arrangement. I will not want to give you that information just like that, I will check; but since you said the police are already involved, our gates are opened for the police to come and make the enquiry.”

Oloyede later called to confirm that there was a student with the name Eric Idowu, adding that she needed a matric number and picture to confirm if the alleged student was a student of UNILAG.

She said, “We have checked, but you have to get the matriculation number of that person because the Idowu that we are seeing has a different course, different level, in that same faculty. But no two students can have a matriculation number that is the same. If you have a picture, send it to me.

She had yet to reply to the picture our correspondent sent to her Whatsapp.

The Lagos State Police Publice Relation Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the police were investigating the case.

He said, “The case is under investigation; we are making efforts to arrest the boy who defrauded the NYSC member. It is sad that somebody will do something of such to a young man who was trying to be self-reliant.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered SARS to ensure the arrest of the perpetrator of this crime to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The disgraced DSS boss, Lawal Daura is yet to regain his freedom and he is being detained and investigated by the police.

 Department of State Services

The Presidency Wednesday said that the sacked Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura will remain under house arrest.

A presidency ‎source that spoke on condition of anonymity said that shortly after the dismissal of the former DSS boss by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday, he (Daura) was arrested right inside the presidential Villa, by men of the Nigerian Police Force.

The source also confirmed that Mr. Daura was presently being detained in one of the presidential guests houses at Aso Rock.

He said, “He will remain there until several investigation over certain issues bordering on him are concluded.” It was reliably gathered that when the sacked DSS DG finished his meeting with Osinbajo on Tuesday after the siege to the National Assembly, he did not follow the normal exit route rather he was secretly whisked away from the Acting President’s office by police officers even without the knowledge of his aides that came with him.

Besides being one of the favourite appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari, the sacked DSS boss was accused to have carried out different controversial actions which the government believed were painting it in bad light.

Among such actions were the raid in October on the homes of judges accused of corruption, whom were later not found guilty and the damaging report against the confirmation of the EFCC boss. Since Daura was booted out, the Acting Chairman of Economic Financial and Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has been meeting with the Acting President.

A man has been arrested and is answering serious questions after he murdered his friend in order to date his girlfriend.
Abraham Umar (L) was killed by a suspected cultist

A man suspected to be a cultist alongside his gang members on Tuesday night shot dead a 28-year-old driver, Abraham Umar at Cele bus stop, Ijanikin, Lagos outskirts in order for him to date his girlfriend.

According to The Nation, Abraham popularly called Abi, was a commercial bus driver on Badagry expressway, Lagos.

The Nation gathered that Abraham had closed for the day on Tuesday night and went to eat at his girlfriend’s mother’s shop when a group of about nine boys surrounded him, shot him in the head and died on the spot.

Abraham’s distraught mother has been left in a state of shock since the incident. His sister, Aminat Umar said Abraham called her that Tuesday around 9:21 pm.

She said: “He (Abraham) asked if I was back from work and told me that he was on his way home.  About 10 minutes later, Peter and Naomi rushed to our house, shouting and banging on the gate that we should come out, saying ‘Abi had been shot at Cele Bus stop and that his body has been taken to the police station’.

“My mother and uncle quickly ran to the station but they were told that nobody was brought there.  They went to check at Ademola Hospital but they were told that the body was not brought there, so they went back to the police station. The police later admitted that the body was at the station, but they locked the body in the cell claiming he was a cultist.”

Abraham’s uncle, Muhammed Umaru, said the late Abraham had been receiving threat messages from some boys.

“Some boys have been telling my son to leave his girlfriend alone that she belongs to one of them and I was told that the girl is very dangerous. My son kept saying everything was fine. I was told by my son’s friend, Peter that the boy sending my son those messages confronted them once; he wore dreadlocks and dark in complexion.

“I reported Abraham to his aunty and uncle; they warned the girl to stay away from him and also warned him to leave the girl alone but he did not listen,” Umaru said.

The girl in question, who gave her name as Arigi Precious Elo, was not remorseful when police arrested her.

Elo, 17, said Abi was her only boyfriend.

Elo said: “I didn’t see Abi on Tuesday night. He called and asked me if he should wait for me at my mother’s shop but I said ‘no’ that I was at my brother’s place at Ajegunle and I will not be coming back because we are planning my brother’s wedding. Today (yesterday), people started calling me, saying Abi has been killed. I didn’t know about any threat message because Abi did not tell me anything.”

A source told The Nation that Elo is a “notorious girl and belongs to a cult group.”

The source said: “She is seen at all the club houses and hotels here. She sleeps around with with men for money. Two of her sisters are said to be in Italy prostituting and her mother is preparing to send her to Dubai. In fact, her travelling documents are ready. She should be travelling in two weeks’ time. I wonder what that gentle boy was doing with her. She is not a good girl.”

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said the boys came in a group after Abi parked his vehicle near the shop.

“He was with his conductor and the owner of the commercial bus when one of the boys  tapped him at the back, another pushed and slammed his head on the wall. Then, one of them put the gun on his head and shot him.

“I was surprised because his girlfriend, Elo was with them. Everybody ran away, leaving his body at the scene while she left with the killers,” he said.

A neighbour said Elo lives with her mother, who owns the shop where Abi was killed.

She said: “Her father had relocated to the village and his  (Elo’s father) friend is allegedly sleeping with her mother. He even lives with them in the house. Elo once told me that she doesn’t respect her father’s friend and her mother because they are shameless people. She said that is why she does whatever she likes and doesn’t listen to them.”

A middle-age man said Ijanikin is a haven for cultists.

“They go into houses, kill and butcher people. As I am talking to you, a whole family are in the hospital. They were attacked and butchered by these boys. Two weeks ago, two boys were shot dead at a bus stop because they refused to release their phones.

“The Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) is not left out. Some notorious boys steal and attack people in the school premises. We are not safe in Ijanikin,”the source said.

Ijanikin Police Station Divisional Police Officer (DPO) said he received the report that a boy was shot and also a message from someone that the boy had been receiving threat messages from the killers.

He said he learnt that the late Umar’s girlfriend and her mother knew about the messages.

Suspected hoodlums have killed a 70-year-old woman in her home in Benin City, Edo State, causing a serious commotion in the area.

Photos from the scene

Unidentified hoodlums on Wednesday killed a 70-year-old woman, Helen Udugbezi, at her residence in Benin. The hoodlums were alleged to have used a big stone to kill the deceased.

The housemaid of the deceased, Anna Amos, who was at home when the incident occurred, alleged that she was almost stabbed and raped by the hoodlums.

The maid also alleged that she was gagged and blindfolded by the hoodlums before they killed her madam.

She said, “I was working when the boys entered the house. I wanted to shout and one of them wanted to stab me.

"Another one said I was still a small girl; they tried to rape me but I said no. I heard a noise but I didn’t see what they were doing.

‘‘Then, they put a stone on my hand and asked me to say I kill mama.”

Davido and very few other African artistes are championing the globalization of the Afrobeat sound. The DMW boss has risen to the top within few years and he has toured several European and American countries.
In a recent interview with Pause Magazine, Davido was asked to advise Nigerian artistes in the overseas who are trying to get their songs heard in the continent and he responded “Go to Nigeria.”
Read excerpts from the interview below.

There’s a lot of African artists based in London, but they’re trying to reach you guys in Nigeria, what advice would you give them?

Go to Nigeria.

Really, you think they should go back?

If they’re trying to reach somewhere it’s the best place to be. But it just depends, to be honest. Mr. Eazi was in London, then he came back.

Do you think you have to get the love from home first before things take off?

To be honest, me, I’m not into this international stuff but I’m really doing it because I’m one of those people pioneering this movement. I have to put a cape on my back and do it for the culture but I always prefer being at home.

Senate President Bukola Saraki has slammed security operatives who invaded NASS yesterday, describing them as enemies of democracy.
Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara

The President of the Senate Dr Bukola Saraki has commended acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the firm decision taken to punish those who invaded the National Assembly on Tuesday by sacking the DG of DSS.

This is even as he referred to those who orchestrated the siege on the National Assembly as cowards.

Saraki condemned the act stressing that it was an attack on democracy and an attack on Nigeria as a whole.

Saraki stressed that he as well as his deputy and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara are willing to resign the day that two thirds of the members of each of the chambers lose confidence in them.

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AT A WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE HELD AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMPLEX ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2018.

1. It is a matter of record that yesterday, lawmakers and staff of the National Assembly were prevented from entering the National Assembly Complex by heavily armed security agents of the Department of State Services (DSS). All entries to the Complex were blocked as early as 6.30 am. The National Assembly, the seat of democracy in Nigeria, was under lockdown. Senators and Members of the House of Representatives were prevented from gaining access.

2. The ensuring standoff was a show of shame that played itself out over several hours in full view of the country. In no circumstances should this have happened. And we as a nation reaped the bitter fruits instantaneously, as evident in media images relayed around the world, images that shame us as a democratic nation. The siege was also an act of cowardice by those seeking to carry out an illegal impeachment of the leadership of the Senate in flagrant disregard of the law. People who seek control at all costs, by whatever means, never minding the injury to democratic norms.

3. We have to say that this is not about us – Abubakar Bukola Saraki or Yakubu Dogara as an individual. It is not about Ike Ekweremadu, nor is it about Yusuf Lasun. We are speaking for my colleagues when I say that this is about the soul of Nigeria, what we represent as a country, (people) and our standing in the comity of nations. This is a country where so much is expected of us, so many rungs of the ladder that we are supposed to have ascended as a nation. Instead we are wallowing in impunity and illegal show of force, all of which retard our progress.

4. This is most disheartening. We don’t get any joy in saying: We said so. We don’t. However, some of you may recall that about two years ago, I stated that there was a government within this government, to a purpose that was not in the interest of what the people voted for. I said it then, and now, almost on a daily basis, we are seeing the manifestations of that government within a government. It beats one’s imagination how the head of a security agency could have authorized the brazen assault on the legislature that we saw yesterday. Only recently we saw in Benue how 8 members of the 30 members of State House of Assembly with the collaboration of security forces, DSS and police tried ot impeach the Governor. Despite the threat to our lives, we shall continue to fight impunity and injustice in this country.

5. Happily, by the actions that Nigerians took yesterday, they demonstrated our strong resolve as a nation not to give ground to oppression. The legislature, more than any other institution in this country, more than any other arm of government, represents the will of the people. We are elected by the people, and an assault on the legislature is an assault on the people of Nigeria. The forcible shutdown of the legislature was an unconscionable assault on a national institution, and thanks to all your efforts, the aggressors have been put to shame.

6. The resistance mounted by staff of the National Assembly, our colleagues in both chambers and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) who refused to leave the entrance of this Complex until the siege was broken, strengthens our faith in the people of this country. The rain fell, the sun rose, but Nigerians stood their ground in defence of democracy. With the strength of will demonstrated by everyone against unwarranted and unconstitutional militaristic might, the siege could not stand.

7. By this, we have shown that Nigerians can resist government within government in whatever guise, and this is humbling for us. Those who sought to defend the attack on the National Assembly under our leadership for their selfish ends have further affirmed our belief in this country. They attempted to execute an illegal impeachment of the leadership of the Senate without the backing of the law, but they faltered. We are confident that, together, we shall always defeat acts of unconstitutionality. The rule of law shall always prevail.

8. We want to thank Nigerians, Senators, Members of the House of Representatives and National Assembly Staff, for standing up to be counted for democracy during yesterday’s siege. We thank the thousands who monitored the situation on radio, television and social media, voicing their outrage at the siege, thereby sending a clear message to those that hatched the plot that the Nigerian public would not buy this act of gangsterism using instruments of state such as the DSS.

9. We also thank the international community – particularly the European Union that visited the complex – and the international press, for their prompt reactions to the invasion of the National Assembly. CSOs and Socio-cultural groups were emphatic in their statements during the crisis, and we very much appreciate their vigilance.

10. Among the many that come up for special mention, we believe that Honourable Boma Goodhead, a member of the House of Representatives, stands out. She looked a masked security operative in the eye and dared him to shoot. She let it be known that Nigerians would not stand for the barricade at the National Assembly, that we would not be cowed. It was another pointer to what is possible in this country when women take their place in leadership.

11. We applaud all who kicked against the atrocity and who stood firm until sanity prevailed. We are proud of how everyone conducted themselves in what was no doubt a tense standoff. The principled stance and defiant reactions to the ugly incident, proved crucial to the failure of the plot. This is what we have been saying about the power of the people. The role of the people in defending democracy is paramount.

12. We thank the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for his handling of the situation we were all confronted with yesterday. His decisive action went a long way towards restoring confidence and the image of our country. It sent a powerful message – that the DSS cannot be recklessly deployed against institutions of our democracy. The path of leadership is not by party, and we must commend it wherever it is found. Mr. Acting President did the right thing. However, the damage control so far does not address the question of how this invasion was allowed to happen in the first place.

13. This is an incident concerning which we have it on good authority that it has been in the planning for months. How is it that such an atrocity was not prevented? How is it that the masterminds were not deterred? Very serious questions remain that can only be answered by a full investigation. We call for an investigation, and we demand that all perpetrators are brought to book. We owe it to ourselves to ensure that such a situation never occurs again. Many agencies have abused their powers and acted outside the ambit of the law on occasion. Where abuses occur, similar actions must be taken immediately and full investigation instituted.

14. We must say that when we fought for Change, we could not have envisaged a scenario such as unfolded yesterday – an atmosphere where people cannot tolerate dissent, or mere differences of opinion as to the future of our dear country. This is not the Change we fought for. We did not fight for instruments of state to be used to oppress Nigerians and their lawmakers. We know that we, certainly, did not fight just so the legislature could be undermined and subjected to this onslaught.

15. There are many lessons to be drawn from the ugly incident we all witnessed yesterday. For one, government must ensure that security agencies remain neutral and act in line with the position of the constitution as well as their enabling laws. Heads of Agencies should be accountable, and those who step out of line must be held responsible for their actions. Enough with impunity. Enough with the reckless and senseless deployment of militaristic force. Enough.

16. In this dark cloud, we can see the silver lining, and that silver lining is the commitment of Nigerians to defending their hard-won democracy. We are more than encouraged by the strength, the determination and the resolve of ordinary Nigerians to see to it that democracy survives and thrives in this country. We are also strengthened by the determination of the media to report and analyse the truth as they see it.

17. We want to reassure Nigerians that, on our part, we remain committed to working for a country governed by the rule of law. Our desire is to have a society where there will be equity and justice, not oppression. We stand committed to doing our utmost as lawmakers to ensure that the responsibility and functionality of governance are met. Although we are on annual break, we are daily reviewing the situation and are alive to the responsibility to take action as necessary. Unfortunately, yesterday’s shutdown prevented us from meeting with INEC, as scheduled, to address their request. We will continue to do all to ensure a smooth and successful 2019 election. In the spirit of that we also appeal to Mr. President to sign the new 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill in line with his recommendations, which has been sent for his assent.

18. We remain confident in the support of my colleagues and their focus on the job at hand, which is to serve the Nigerian people. My confidence is unshaken. We remain committed to the success of the historic 8th National Assembly, and to the continued progress of our country.

19. In closing, let me reiterate that neither myself, Deputy Senate President or Speaker belong to the class of politicians that are desperate to stay in power by al means and at all costs. The day, two thirds of our members feel they do not have confidence in our leadership, we will gracefully bow out. I repeat again and again, this is not about us, but about respecting the constitution and the rule of law.

Thank you.

PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Senate President, Bukola Saraki's World Press Conference has held successfully with the former Kwara governor making bold statements.

Senate President Bukola Saraki

On Wednesday,  the Senate President, Bukola Saraki,  addressed a world press conference to talk about the Tuesday blockade of the National Assembly Complex by operatives of the Department of State Services.

Here are 10 interesting things that Saraki said during the press conference:
 1. The siege is an act of cowardice by those who want to carry out an impeachment of the leadership of the Senate in flagrant disregard of the law.

2. By the actions that Nigerians took yesterday, they demonstrated our strong resolve as a nation not to give ground to oppression.

3. The legislature, more than any other institution in this country, more than any other arm of government represents the will of the people.

4. We are elected by the people, and an assault on the legislature is an assault on the people of Nigeria.”

5. Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, did the right thing.

6. The damage control does not address the question of how this atrocity happened in the first place. It should have been done earlier and we will hold the government responsible for consistency.

7. This is an incident concerning which we have on good authority, has been in the planning for months, and yet it was allowed to happen.

8. We (National Assembly) have no need for external security.

9. I was elected as Senate president. Our constitution is clear that members of the Senate can elect their president.

10. Today, we are here to talk about democracy and it is not time to talk about my presidential ambition.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, addressed a world press conference and talked about the controversies trailing Tuesday's blockade of the National Assembly Complex.

While speaking at a world press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki alleged that the National Assembly was aware of the  siege on the National Assembly by the DSS long before it happened.

Commenting on the blockage of the entrance of the National Assembly by DSS security operatives, Saraki said he and his colleagues were aware that the siege had been “in the planning for months.”

He said: “This is an incident concerning which, we have on good authority, has been in the planning for months, and yet it was allowed to happen.

“How is it that such an atrocity was not prevented? How is it that the masterminds were not deterred?” he asked.

Contending that those were “very serious questions,” he said they could “only be answered by a full investigation.”

“We call for an investigation and we demand that all perpetrators are brought to book. We owe it to ourselves to ensure that such a situation never occurs again,” he said.

Bukola Saraki

While speaking at a ‘world press conference’ at the National Assembly Abuja on Wednesday, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, denied allegations he compromised the sacked director-general of the Department of State Security Service, Lawal Daura.

“Let us not insult the intelligence of Nigerians,” Saraki said of the attacks, adding that he was also a victim of alleged recklessness of security chiefs, including Daura.

The Senate Presdient also mentioned that his security detail was recently reduced, as well as that of Speaker Yakubu Dogara, all without recourse to due process.

Speaking further, Saraki also commended the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo for sacking of the erstwhile Director-General of the DSS, Lawal Daura on Tuesday saying,“Mr. Acting President did the right thing. “

“I thank the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for his handling of the situation we were all confronted with yesterday. His decisive action went a long way towards restoring confidence,” the Senate President said.

Bukola Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki says he is not desperate to stay in office. However, a condition has to be met: his removal must be by two-thirds majority of the upper chamber.

Saraki said this on Wednesday while addressing a ‘World press Conference’ on Tuesday’s siege to the National Assembly by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Senate President defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, sparking calls for his resignation/impeachment by the ruling party.

“The day two-thirds of our members no longer have confidence in us, we will leave this place,” Saraki said as he wound up his speech.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kazaure spoke at the Ekiti State Permanent Orientation Camp, situated in Ise/Emure, in Ise/Orun local government area of Ekiti.
He was on a visit to educate corp members on dangers inherent in playing with their health and security.

According to him, the standing rule of the agency is being repeatedly ignored in a manner that suggested that authorities had abdicated their roles of looking after the well-being as well as the welfare of the corp members.

“You all have to avoid night journeys and other unnecessary journeys for that matter. Remember that before you embark on any journey, the need arises that you first inform your immediate supervisors and obtain necessary permits

“A graduate is expected by the society to be above board. I, therefore, want you to please join hands with me to ensure that the tragic incident in Taraba is the very last of such.”

Kazaure, who arrived in the Ekiti state camp at about 4.45p.m expresssed deep regrets over the tragic death of nine corp members in Taraba State during the weekend, describing it as a huge loss to him personally, and the nation in general.

NAN reports that the director-general who himself claimed to have undergone the NYSC mandatory programme, over 30 years ago, said the sad incident was highly regretted and called for a minute silence to honour those who lost their lives.

According to him, there is also the need for corps members to respect the culture and tradition of their host communities.

Kazaure said that any corps member in the coiuntry was free to call his personal number on 07042542779, in case of any emergency that the felt their immediate supervisors could not handle.

He warned them, particularly the females, to avoid dressing irresponsibly and also pway from sharp practices such as engaging in Iinternet fraud among others.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the new State Director, Mrs. Aniefiok Okpongete, told the director-general that a total of 1,809 Corps members were currently registered, comprising 1,109 males and 700 females.

However, she said that a total of 187, among them, 149 females and 38 males had been advised to leave camp on account of being either pregnant, nursing mothers or facing critical health challenges.

Former Super Eagles superstar, Carl Ikeme, has spoken up about how his wife reacted when he told her he had been diagnosed with leukemia.
Carl Ikeme and his family

Carl Ikeme has revealed that missing the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia was hard for him to take, Vanguard reports.

Ikeme was diagnosed with leukaemia a few months to the tournament and after his recovery he announced his retirement from the game, with the Nigeria Football Federation offering to make him an assistant coach in the Super Eagles coaching crew.

“The World Cup was probably a bit more difficult to take.

“The World Cup, to me, is the pinnacle of football. No disrespect to Wolves, because I loved playing every minute for them, but the World Cup is a different stage – they’re the memories you have as a kid. So that was something that I’d knew I’d miss out on and never get the chance to do again.”

The goalkeeper who made 207 appearances for his boyhood club Wolves further spoke about how he revealed the news of his diagnosis to his wife who was then none-month pregnant.

“She was the first person I told. I was obviously upset, as you would be after that sort of news,” Ikeme said. “I was in shock. I got back home and thought: ‘I need to tell Saba.’ I called her and I couldn’t get it out on the phone, but she knew something was up.

“I got back and Saba came in and I told her the news. She was nine months pregnant at the time, due next week. I’ve never seen her cry the way she cried. It was tough.”
