The woman widely considered to be the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has died at the age of 76.
Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin, whose gospel-rooted singing and bluesy yet expansive delivery earned her the title "the Queen of Soul," has died, a family statement said Thursday. She was 76.

Franklin died at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit, surrounded by family and friends, according to a statement on behalf of Franklin's family from her longtime publicist Gwendolyn Quinn.

The "official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin's oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit," the family statement said.
Her death comes three days after a source close to Franklin told CNN's Don Lemon that the singer was in hospice care.

"In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds,"Franklin's family said.

"We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days, the statement said.

The singer had been reported to be in failing health for years and appeared frail in recent photos, but she kept her struggles private.

In February 2017, Franklin announced she would stop touring, but she continued to book concerts. Earlier this year, she canceled a pair of performances, including at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, on doctor's orders, according to Rolling Stone.

The singer's final public performance was last November, when she sang at an Elton John AIDS Foundation gala in New York.

Over the course of a professional career that spanned more than half a century, Franklin's songs not only topped the charts but became part of the vernacular.

She made "Respect," written by Otis Redding, a call to arms. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," a Carole King song, was an earthy expression of sexuality. "Think," which she wrote with her then-husband, Ted White, became a rallying cry for women fed up with loutish men.

The first woman admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she had 88 Billboard chart hits during the rock era, tops among female vocalists. At the peak of her career -- from 1967 to 1975 -- she had more than two dozen Top 40 hits.

"Aretha Franklin is not only the definitive female soul singer of the Sixties," according to her Rolling Stone biography, "she's also one of the most influential and important voices in pop history."

She won 18 Grammy awards, including the honor for best female R&B performance for eight straight years.

There was nothing run-of-the-mill about a Franklin performance. "I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You)" is slinky and gritty, Franklin's voice sometimes a whisper over Spooner Oldham's electric piano.

"The House That Jack Built" fairly crackles: "I got the house / I got the car / I got the rug / And I got the rack / But I ain't got Jack," Franklin belts.

In Franklin's delivery, "Eleanor Rigby" was a figure of defiance; with Franklin's voice, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" went places not even Art Garfunkel, whose angelic tenor dominated Simon & Garfunkel's original version, could take it.

Her soul was as deep as her voice was strong.

"I think of Aretha as 'Our Lady of Mysterious Sorrows,'" wrote the late Jerry Wexler, Franklin's producer at Atlantic Records. "Her eyes are incredible, luminous eyes covering inexplicable pain. Her depressions could be as deep as the dark sea. I don't pretend to know the sources of her anguish, but anguish surrounds Aretha as surely as the glory of her musical aura."

A woman from Benue state, continually slept with her son from her first marriage in order to have children with her second husband. She has now revealed how she was able to lure her son to perform the act with her.

Mrs. Veronica Iorshe

The story of a woman sleeping with her son from her first marriage in order to raise children for her husband from her second marriage sounds so strange. Unbelievable! Did we hear you say abomination of the highest order?

Well, that’s exactly what happened when Mrs. Veronica Iorshe, 47, from Howe, Ugee Council Ward slept with her son from her first marriage in order to have children for her second husband, Sebastian Iorshe, 44, from Aliade, all in the same Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

Beginning of a tragic story

The tragic story started much earlier when Veronica got married, at 19, to Mr. James Hon (now late) from Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state. The marriage was blessed with one child, a son. But eight months after, Hon died in an auto accident on the Makurdi-Enugu road while returning from a business trip. He used to trade in palm oil.

After his death, Veronica summoned up the courage and continued with the business while staying in her husband’s house. But owing to some irreconcilable differences between her and her husband’s people, she returned to her maternal place but still continued with the oil-trading business, with her only son, Simon Hon.

But somewhere along the line Veronica switched to bushmeat marketing business. In her itinerary, she would travel to Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa state to buy the meat and thereafter sell it to the people of Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. It was in the course of doing this that she met Sebastian Iorshe, a Tiv man from the area and a love relationship developed between the two. As it were, Sebastian had also lost his spouse two months after marriage in 1998.

So, given the mutual fate and feelings shared by the widow and widower, they did not see any reason not to marry and settle down as husband and wife. They did so about eight years ago. But the marriage ran into a big storm when it repeatedly failed to produce a child or children to cement the relationship.

Matters were not helped much with Veronica’s movement into the second marriage with her only son, Simon, now 26-years-old. Sebastian’s mother who is not happy over the couple’s inability to produce children was said to regularly accuse Veronica of using her son’s wealth to train up her own son.

Descent into the abominable act

But amid the frosty relationship, suspicion, accusations and counter-accusations created by this development, the couple neglected to go for a medical check up to ascertain the source of the problem. Veronica put the blame on her husband. She claims that while she was willing, her husband was not. She said she suspects that her husband, said to be suffering from low sperm count, had, all along, known that he is unable to father a child.

But not too sure of where the problem lay, Veronica decided to test her own virility or potency by luring her son into secret lovemaking (with a stem warning not to reveal the affair to anybody). Investigation by Saturday Sun reveals that the serial lovemaking session lasted throughout the month of March and April 2018.

Each time Veronica came down to Lafia with her son to deliver dry meat to restaurants around the area, she would rent a hotel room where she would, time and again, lure her son into performing s-xual acts with her. Her reason for doing so she said, was to ascertain whether the fault was from her or not. At the end of April the result came out when she missed her period, signaling that she was pregnant.

But when she broke to her husband, what ordinarily would have been good news, he denied being responsible for it and suspected foul play. Stating February 1, 2018 as the last time they had s-x together, he wondered how that would have resulted in pregnancy two months after. He added that if she missed her period at the end of April, then he is not responsible for it.

This development led to suspicion that created a big crisis in the family. On 2nd August 2018, both of them submitted themselves to a medical test in Lafia based on the advice of a close relation. The result showed that Veronica is three months pregnant and confirmed the fact her last lovemaking with her husband February 1, couldn’t have led to that.

Matters turned out worse when another test conducted on her husband showed that he has weak and low sperm count that would make it impossible to father a child. The moment these details were released by the hospital, the angry husband, accusing her of infidelity, asked his wife to pack out of his house to go and live with the man responsible for her pregnancy.

Confession and moment of truth

After persistent pressure from our correspondent, Veronica eventually opened up to tell her own side of the story. “I am not a loose woman,” she said. “I am just a woman who loves her husband very much and didn’t want to lose him. I did what I did to save my marriage even though I feel guilty about it.

"It was not easy but I slept with my first son from my first husband so that I could give my husband a child. But rather sustaining my marriage, the plan has scattered it and I have lost it.

“I got married to my husband eight years ago. We had no child. The worst was that I never got pregnant even for one day. When I discovered that I was no longer getting younger, I was worried as much as he and his parents were.
"His mother became so impatient that she started breathing down my neck as she gave me no breathing space at all. She said that I was cheating on her son, using his son’s money to maintain my son, that I’m older than his son.

“She moved in to live with us and practically made life in my matrimonial home unbearable for me. At a point, she stopped talking to me. The only time she would talk to me was when she wanted to insult me and remind me of how less a woman I was.
"I was confused, more so when my husband refused to submit himself to a medical test to ascertain the source of the problem, though we loved each other before the heavy pressure from his mum came.
"We used to have serious lovemaking sessions especially during my ovulation period all in the bid to get pregnant so that my mother-in-law could stop humiliating me.
"Yet, I couldn’t get pregnant. I started suspecting the problem could be from my husband when he refused to subject himself to medical test. But the insult from my mother-in-law was getting too much, too unbearable for me.
"She vowed to frustrate me out of her son’s home. To make things worse, she sent away my son saying that he has no business staying in the house. I had to look for a one-room apartment for him in Lafia.

“After he left, it was just three of us in the house in Awe, which is a distance away from Lafia. I was always terrified each time I heard her voice from a distance. She tried to frustrate my meat market in Awe.
"In fact, the only time that I had peace was when I went to the market. It is so agonizing to say this. Instead of testing someone else to ascertain my fertility, I seduced and slept with my son. Simon is a young man in his early 20s; he has not started sleeping with women before I lured him into making love with me.

“I started by buying good things for him, sleeping together on the same bed, playing with his manhood and gradually one thing led to another. There was a time I asked him if he had tested s-x before and he said no.
"I compelled him to take an oath not to disclose it to anybody. I said I would teach him s-x. I ensured that I did that during my ovulation period. I never disclosed the reason for this but deep in my mind, I wanted to test my fertility. I planned it during my ovulation so that I could get pregnant, although it was not easy sleeping with a son.
"I knew I was doing the wrong thing and betraying my husband but I saw it as a necessary action to save my marriage. I didn’t want to go out sleeping with another man outside. I knew it was wrong but I prefer it from my son than a man outside. After one month, I discovered that I was pregnant.”

Picking pieces of a broken life

Now that the deed had been done and her husband had sent her packing from matrimonial, you wanted to know what she was going to do. She responded that she would do nothing else but piece together the pieces of her broken life and move on.

She would relocate to Markurdi, she said to continue the dry meat supply business with her son. But how about the pregnancy, you managed to ask. Is she going to abort or keep it? Though she regrets her action, she said, she had decided to keep it because “it is blood within my blood.”

It was gathered that when the heat became unbearable, Veronica asked her son to relocate to Benue State to avoid unforeseen circumstances.

Husband’s reaction

Speaking on the issue Sebastian expressed his disappointment over his wife’s betrayal and vowed never to forgive her. “I don’t want to believe the story she is narrating to you that her son is responsible for it, though I have not suspected her or seen any sign that an outsider was dating her,” he said.
“But the truth is that I’m not responsible for the pregnancy and will not allow her into my house. It is a shame for me to be associated with a mess like this. Please, I don’t want to talk about it anymore; she is no longer my wife.”

A suspected kidnapper who wanted to kidnap a pharmacy owner and later slept off as a result of tramadol he took before the operation, is still sleeping 6-days later.

The suspect

The Ondo State Police Command have revealed that the suspected kidnapper who slept off at the victim's home as a result of tramadol he took before the operation, was still sleeping six days after he was taken to the police custody.

According to PUNCH Metro, the suspect whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was arrested by men of the command on Sunday as he and three other members of his gang attempted to kidnap a pharmaceutical shop owner in Owo town.

The police said that the 3-man gang stormed the shop with guns with the intention to kidnap the owner, but the victim raised the alarm and escaped through the back door.

The police explained that the suspect tried to escape on a motorcycle but stumbled while he was trying to ride it. He reportedly snatched the motorcycle from a customer of the shop owner.

The other members of the gang were said to have taken to their heels.

The police stated that a 400mg tablet of Tramadol was recovered from the pocket of the sleeping suspect which raised the suspicion that he must have taken the drug before he went for the operation.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, who spoke to our correspondent on Friday, said the suspect had yet to wake up.

He said, “As of today (Friday), the suspect had yet to wake up. Maybe he took too much of the drug, that is why he is still sleeping. We have tried all we could to make him regain his consciousness to no avail.

“However, we are still watching him to find out if he is pretending. We are with him and he would face the music no matter how long he is unconscious.”

It was a heartbreak for fans of P-sqaure last year after the Okoye brothers announced the break-up of their group after 19 years, but will they ever come back together again? a writer has penned a piece on how the big dogs don't bite again.
P-square

Until late last year, when they finally went their separate ways, Peter and Paul Okoye, popularly known as P-Square used to be the favourite of many lovers of contemporary Nigerian music. But the same cannot be said of the twins today no matter how hard they try to make their fans believe that all is well with them.

The duo announced their break up as a musical group last year after months of speculation, dirty fights on social media and disagreements. Consequently, they embarked on solo careers to display individually what they brought to the table, to create the famous Psquare brand. But almost a year after their breakup, the singing duo are rarely measuring up to expectations, and their fans can tell better.

At the time one of the twins, Peter sent to their lawyer, Festus Keyamo a demand for the termination of the agreement between the group-P-Square,on Thursday, September 21, 2017, he definitely was ready for the worst to happen.  Unfortunately, he did not give any thought about what becomes of the Psquare brand after their split.

Despite defending his decision with a series of allegations made against his twin brother, Paul Okoye and their elder brother/manager, Jude Okoye, Peter Okoye is sure to be counting his losses today as well as those of his twin brother, Paul Okoye.

Apparently, before their split, Psquare was one of the most famous musical groups in Africa with successful shows in America, Canada, Europe and other parts of the world. The group’s net worth then in Dollars reportedly was more than $130 million.

They were one of the richest singers in Nigeria, earning about $150,000 per show in Africa. They also got a lot of money for their contracts, music downloads, different ads, and endorsements.

They not only had a fleet of posh cars, including Hummer Jeep H2, worth $120,000, but also, they were into real estate business, and owed many houses in the highbrow areas of Omole Estate, Lekki and Atlanta respectively. Being one of the favourite music groups in Africa, the duo reportedly had more than 4 million fans on social media.

While they lasted, the identical twins were the most sought after entertainers in Africa. Besides, some of their back to back singles such as “Getting Down”, “Chop my Money”, “Personally” , “Beautiful Onyinye” , “Ejeajo” and “Bring it On” not only received massive airplay, but also, global acceptance.

Their success continued to earn them many nominations and awards both within and outside the shores of the country. Also, the pair had other sources of income that gave them an edge over their contemporaries. They were into multimillion naira real state business in addition to having an endorsement deal with telecoms giant, Glo, which according to those in the know ran into hundreds of millions of Naira.

They also had an endorsement deal with Skol Beer (Congo) which also ran into millions of naira. Sadly, all of these achievements have been swept under the carpet, and the duo have reasons to start afresh to build an individual brand that would surpass Psquare.

From all indications, part of the inevitable prices the duo have continued to pay following their break up is a steady cancellation of tours, shows, public appearances and the subsequent revenue loss.

It has become so bad that a source close to the singing duo, confirmed to us that since their break up, they have been busy refunding monies paid to them in advance for shows they never honoured as a group. At a point, according to the source, “their Accounting officer was forced to ask them “what’s happening …you’re only getting debit and no credit alerts.”

To make matters worse, the source further revealed that the duo are currently putting up some of their joint property for sale. But despite the prevailing dicey situation, the Okoye brothers are “ready to take risks” and they are not looking back, not even at the expense of their fans.

As solo artistes

When their break up was made public, fans as well as critics were curious as to which of the twin brothers has a better chance of making it as a solo artiste. However, a close look at their individual performances after the breakup, it seems Peter Okoye, now known as Mr. P who initiated the separation obviously is leading the way. With his media-friendly mien, great looks and the ability to spin a good story, Mr P is surely carving out a niche for himself.

But the question remains, how far can he go in this journey without his twin brother? Ironically, ‘when the going was good’, the duo made great hits, toured round the world and graced both local and international stages together as ‘P-Square’, not as ‘Mr. P’ or ‘Rudeboy’ as Paul Okoye is fondly called by his fans. And now, it’s every man for himself.

In the heat of the breakup, Paul Okoye kicked off his solo career last November, after he dropped his two singles, ‘Nkenji Keke and “Fire Fire.”’ He dropped the singles few weeks after his half brother, Mr. P equally released his own solo single, “ Cool It Down” the mid-tempo song he dropped under P-Classic Records. Mr. P has since released two other singles, ‘For My Head,’ and ‘My Way’ as a proof of his readiness to be ahead of his twin brother.

The singles reportedly made waves, with the first two running into millions and the most recent one almost at the 300,000 mark in just three days of its release. “Cool it down’, which is his first official release, has a sample. Up next is ‘My Way’, a record which samples its instrumentals from Mario Winans’ ‘I don’t Wanna Know’, a 2003 song co-which features Diddy, and co-produced by Fugees. The single recorded a huge success worldwide, reaching #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #1 in the UK Top 40.

The video for ‘My Way’, has Peter Okoye condemned to a desert by a jilted lover. It conceptually borrows from Chris Brown’s ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ visuals. Critics believe Mr. P has always had his key influences from the 90s and early 2000’s R&B singers. But with the split, Peter seems to have fallen back on old techniques to create future sounds.

The pop singer is not ready to disappoint his fans, even as his vocal dexterity remains an added advantage to his quest to rebrand himself. Many have described him as the engine room of the group. But his half brother, Paul appears to be doing his own thing quietly. He’s said to be very capable of satiating P-Square fans with songs that are reminiscent of the group at their very best. Paul Okoye’s impressive love song, “Nkenji Keke”, for one, sounds like a song that would have fit perfectly on their acclaimed third studio album, Get Squared.

While the second single, “Fire Fire”, is literally begging to be played at every Nigerian wedding ceremony for the foreseeable future. Both songs as so impressive, as it’s almost impossible to pick which of them stands out.” But all in all, the Okoye brothers are leaving no stone un-turned in their bid to outshine each other. However, time will tell who is better as a solo artiste. At the moment, we can only postulate whether “talent” or “deals” will help them scale through individually as Mr. P or Rude Boy.

Chances of their reunion

It’s not clear whether the duo are ready to come together again, at least not for now. Peter Okoye, in a recent interview he granted to Citizen TV in Kenya, gave condition for their reunion. But it’s up to his brother to shift his ground.

“The fans want Psquare but how many times do you want Psquare to come back and break up? We’ve broken up three times and the same issue is still there. so if Psquare is going to come back we need to settle that issue. Psquare might come back, they might not come back.”

Peter said he must put his wife and children first because of the vow he made on his wedding day. “I pulled out the plug because I felt the disrespect coming from my family (was) getting too much,” he said.

“There’s something we call marginalisation. Don’t ever be a slave because you want to be in a family. Psquare can only come back if the respect comes 100 percent. I don’t disrespect my brother’s wife or his family but he disrespects mine all the time.

"He would insult me and my family in public, on instagram, and the next minute he would wait for me for us to perform together. I can’t do that. one thing is for sure, I took a vow to protect my wife and kids the day I got married and I stick to that,” Peter said.

Fans clamouring for their reunion!

Almost one year after their break up, fans can’t stop missing Psquare’s electrifying performances, imitable dance steps and crowd-pulling concerts. Their insistence on knowing the whereabouts of the other half brother in the case of one of them performing solo cannot be ignored. A case in point, was when Mr. Paul was performing solo last year at Phynofest music carnival at ‘The Cathedral’, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

The organizer of the show and rapper, Phyno while performing his collaboration song with Psquare, ‘Financial Woman,’ at which point Paul joined him on stage to sing the song’s chorus. Hell was let loose when fans started asking him the whereabouts of his twin brother, Peter.

Responding to questions from the crowd, Paul replied that Peter was in America. He would go on to perform a few of the group’s old songs but the crowd kept asking him about the whereabouts of his brother. At a point, he stopped singing to reply to their questions, as he blamed his half brother for their break up.

That’s the truth, the Okoye brothers would have to live with, as long as they remain separated. Meanwhile, many fans of the duo believe that they will do better as a group than as individuals. For veteran musician, Tee Mac, the identical twins jointly nurtured their careers, had an interesting stage shows and their fans loved them.

According to him, “ The twin brothers will soon realize that going solo, they have to start afresh. But this time, the competition of nice looking young musicians is there and the millions of Nigerian teenagers don’t care about the quality and professional experience P-Square may have achieved over the years. “I wish Peter and Paul all the best in all their endeavours.”

For an Akwa-Ibom-based radio DJ, RockyFela, P-Square’s separation is bound to have a negative effect, as long as one of the brothers was the creative force behind the group. ”If the two brothers contributed equally in terms of composition and song writing, they wouldn’t be found wanting as solo artistes,” he noted.

However, after 19 years of pursuing joint musical careers, it’s only natural that the twin brothers cannot be together forever, not even when they are married with kids, and having made a name as one of the longest partnerships in the musical world. But if the truth is to be told, the Okoyo brothers will continue to draw not only their musical strengths but also, will live under the shadow of the P-Square brand.

Samuel, while driving home along Ibari Road, Alagbado around 9pm on Sunday, reportedly crushed the father of five, dumped his corpse in a canal and fled the community.

Taiwo Aiyegbusi

A computer engineer identified simply as Samuel is on the run following the gruesome death of his neighbour, Taiwo Aiyegbusi, in the Alagbado area of Lagos State.

Samuel, while driving home along Ibari Road, Alagbado around 9pm on Sunday, reportedly crushed the father of five, dumped his corpse in a canal and fled the community.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Taiwo, a mechanic in Fagba, a neighbouring community, had visited his church member, who lives a few metres away from the scene of the accident.

The 42-year-old native of Ipere Ekiti, Ekiti State, was trekking back home when Samuel lost control of the car and veered into his path, slamming him on an electric pole.

Our correspondent gathered that Samuel and three friends were returning from a party.

They were said to have taken Taiwo to a private hospital in the neighborhood, from where he was referred to the Ikeja General Hospital. They reportedly dumped his corpse in a canal at Abattoir area after he died on the way to the hospital.

Samuel reportedly returned to the scene and removed his car.

A friend of the deceased, Segun Inuesokan, said landlords around the area kept quiet on the incident until he (Inuesokan) threatened to report them to the police. He added that it was a search party organised to look for Taiwo that found his corpse in the canal.

It was learnt that the suspect’s father was arrested by the police from the Alagbado Police Station after Taiwo’s family reported the incident. He was released on Tuesday with a promise that he would provide Samuel by Friday.

The suspect had yet to be arrested as of the time of filing this report.

A police source disclosed to our correspondent that the victim was not rushed to the hospital immediately after the crash because the landlords insisted on collecting N50,000 from Samuel to replace the electric pole.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident, said the command had launched a manhunt for Samuel, noting that anybody found complicit in Taiwo’s death and disposal of his body would be brought to book.

Several members of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State are set to leave for another party due to lack of patronage by the governor.

Governor Godwin Obaseki

The wind of defection blowing across the country is about to take a swoop on the home state of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole as eight lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly have threatened to defect to the other political parties.

It was not clear as at press time which political parties the lawmakers are planning to defect to, but the planned defection of the eight lawmakers, according to sources, is because they were not sure of getting the APC ticket.

A source close to the lawmakers who are about to leave APC, hinged the planned defection on the ban on campaign by the Edo APC leadership, which according to him, has heighten fears of the lawmakers that it might be late for them to get nomination of other parties if they fail to secure APC tickets.

One of the defecting state legislators who preferred anonymity, blamed the looming mass defection partly on the lack of political patronage by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The lawmaker who told selected journalists that many of their constituency projects were not funded by Governor Obaseki, added that many of his colleagues do not know what they would use to campaign to their constituents even if they get the APC ticket.

THISDAY gathered that Oshiomhole, had scheduled to meet with all aggrieved APC leaders in the state today (Thursday) to resolve all issues which was botched at the last meeting owing to two reasons.

Oshiomhole had assured APC supporters who came to receive him at the Bénin Airport last Saturday that the party would reward all those who worked for the party.

“I want to assure you that the tradition of carry our people along will be sustained.

You represent what I call our infantry division. You are the ones on election day who ensure that our voters come out. You are the ones who ensure that the PDP rigging machine was defeated. We must keep you as a standing point, together we will match on and will ensure that everyone who works is looked after.

“I know there are people with all kinds of stories but let me assure you that after the storm the weather will settle. Trust me, as you have not abandoned me, I will never abandon you. To our youths, I want to particularly appeal to you; don’t lose faith.

There will be work, there will be participation; there will be involvement. We will not throw away anybody.

“Nobody will be used and dumped. If yesterday has come beautiful, tomorrow will be better,” he explained.

No Peoples Democratic Party candidate will be able to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, according to VP Osinbajo.

Osinbajo and Buhari

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is sure that President Muhammadu Buhari will defeat other presidential candidates next year to  continue his administration’s change agenda, according to a report by The Nation.

Osinbajo made the assertion yesterday while speaking at the Township Stadium in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, while receiving Senator Godswill Akpabio, who defected from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Acting President, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; declared that treasury looters would no longer be allowed to return to power.

At the rally witnessed by a mammoth crowd of APC members and supporters of the ruling party were  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole; Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, who led over 35 senators to the event, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki; the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Managing Director Nsima Ekere, a governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom state; and Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) Senator Ita Enang, among other leaders of APC.

Many members of the National Assembly, Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, State Working Committee (SWC) of PDP, former commissioners in the state and many elders of PDP across the three senatorial districts of Akwa Ibom State joined Akpabio in the APC.

Oshiomhole also announced the former governor of Akwa Ibom State (Akpabio) as the new leader of APC in the state.

The teeming members of APC and their supporters started arriving at the stadium from 7 a.m., for the event slated for 10 a.m. It kicked off over four hours behind schedule, with Akpabio arriving at the stadium, in company with his wife, Ekaete, at 2:20 p.m. Other leaders of the party arrived later.

Just as the rally was going on at the township stadium, PDP stakeholders in Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District kicked against the defection.

Addressing PDP supporters yesterday in Ikot Ekpene, the PDP’s political leader of the senatorial district, Senator Emmanuel Ibok-essien, claimed that Akpabio did not consult them before taking the decision to dump the PDP for APC.

Ibok-essien, who was the Deputy Director-General of Akpabio’s 2015 senatorial campaign organisation, stated that people of the area would not support Akpabio’s re-election into the Senate in 2019, calling on the people of the senatorial district and the state to support the re-election of Governor Udom Emmanuel and other PDP candidates in next year’s elections.

The Acting President said: “I came here to thank the people of Akwa Ibom State for the remarkable show of solidarity that you have exhibited today (yesterday). I came here to dispense this goodwill from the President and the Acting President for the show of solidarity and to tell you that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari loves the people of Akwa Ibom State. I have come here to share with you the thrust of this government and to give you some basic facts that will help you make up your minds as to the direction Akwa Ibom has decided to go in 2019.

“When this government came on board and as President Muhammadu Buhari constituted his cabinet, you will be shocked to find that there are 36 ministers; 18 of these ministers are Christians, 18 are Muslims. Out of the 18 Christians, nine are Catholics. In addition to that, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is a Christian, the Head of Service of the Federation is a Christian, the Vice-President is a Christian, the Governor of the Central Bank is a Christian.

“When we met with the Conference of Catholic Bishops, I told them that if there is anybody that owns this government, the Catholics have nothing really to complain, because they have nine ministers, in addition to the chairman of the party, the Governor of the Central Bank; they also have the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“People of Akwa Ibom State, I know that this is electioneering year, a lot of people will be going around offering their services to you. I have worked with all the candidates of the PDP. I know them personally. They are my friends. I do not have anything against them. If I have my way, I will ask the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow all of them compete, but I can assure you that all of them will be defeated by President Buhari in 2019, because all of them are from the Northern part of the country.

“In 2007, we barely got two million votes all over the nation. I can tell you that President Buhari has won consistently in their states. Is it Sokoto, is it Kano, is it Jigawa, is it Gombe, is it Adamawa? Where else? Buhari is the only candidate that can give you 10 million votes as head start. Why do you have to invest and engage a candidate that can just generate 300,000 votes in his state? It is a totally wasteful exercise.”

He spoke about the administration’s achievement, saying:

“I recommend the government of the APC to you, because it has delivered on all planks. We are growing the economy, your railways are coming on board. Work is being provided through the social intervention programme, security is being improved, in spite of the challenges and with Akwa Ibom coming on board, under the able leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, things will change and turn around for the better for the Niger Delta region.”

Prof. Osinbajo also lauded the people of Akwa Ibom State for the massive support, pleading with them to be ambassadors of the change, as they returned to their various homes and communities, thereby setting the foundation for the growth of democracy.

The Acting President also thanked Akpabio for his exemplary leadership, the uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State and his decision to turn around the fortunes of the Niger Delta region, adding that the entire Southsouth zone will be taken over by the APC.

To Oshiomhole, the sea heads at the stadium, the energy of the youth, their sheer determination, as evidenced by the fact that they had been waiting since morning, it was certain that they would have the change they desire. He described Akpabio as an “uncommon transformer”, for pulling the mammoth crowd.

Oshiomhole said: “Today (yesterday) is historic in the life of our party (APC). For too long, when I was governor of Edo State, even now my successor, Godwin Obaseki, we have always said that in the whole of the Southsouth, it is only in Edo State that APC has a governor. We are determined to find other states in the Southsouth to join forces with Edo State to sustain the changes that Nigeria badly requires.

“There are people who are giving the impression that Akwa Ibom State belongs to them, but today, with what my eyes have seen (mammoth crowd), in February next year, the great people of Akwa Ibom State will effect a change, under the leadership of a man of honour, Akpabio, who did what other people failed to do, by saying enough of the umbrella that has been badly shattered by terrible political weather, after misruling Nigeria for 16 years.

“What other people are afraid to do, Akpabio did it after deep reflection and he listened to the yearnings of his people, by sacrificing the title of Minority Leader of the Senate to join the APC. Akpabio did what Senator Bukola Saraki is unable to do and he has shown that the people of the Southsouth zone can be different, where it matters. We can stand up and be counted.

“I know that with your (Akpabio’s membership of our great party (APC), we will benefit from your uncommon transformational qualities that you demonstrated while you were the governor of this great state. You (Akpabio) are an uncommon defector. There are ordinary defectors, who want to move, but they want to steal the crown. We have an uncommon rally in Ikot Ekpene.

“Akwa Ibom people are united that in 2019, under the leadership and guidance of Akpabio, this state will join the states of progressive governance."

Lawal Daura is set to be interrogated by the anti-graft agency, EFCC over some missing funds within the security apparatus he headed.

Lawal Daura

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to interrogate the sacked Director General of the Directorate of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, over an alleged N17bn scam, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.

Daura, who was sacked by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo following the siege to the National Assembly by DSS operatives, is being interrogated by the police.

EFCC sources told Daily Trust that operatives of the anti-graft agency on Tuesday evening visited the police facility at Guzape Abuja where Daura was being held preparatory to receiving him.

“It is expected that the former DSS boss will be handed [to the EFCC] over by the police for further interrogation to explain how the N17 billion traced to the headquarters of the DSS was utilized,” said one of the sources at the anti-graft agency.

The money, it was further learnt, was left behind by the Daura’s predecessor Ita Ekpeyong. It was alleged that Ekpeyong received N20 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Ekpeyong, it was also alleged, converted N17 billion into United States of America (USA) dollars, which he left behind when he handed over to Daura.

The funds were reportedly traced by EFCC investigators as a fall out of discoveries after the $43 billion linked to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) was found stashed at a private apartment inside Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos.

EFCC sources said operatives of the commission had been working on the investigation report that indicted the management of the DSS, but that the investigation was frustrated by Daura.

DSS agents, on the orders of Daura, prevented EFCC agents from arresting Ita Ekpeyong and sacked DG of NIA Ayo Oke on November 21, 2017, to prevent the investigation.

“So now is a good time to get Daura to answer questions in connection to the investigation earlier started,” sources said.

Daily Trust reports that Osinbajo met again with the new acting DG of DSS Matthew Seiyefa and the acting EFCC chairman Magu shortly after presiding over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting yesterday.

The acting president had earlier on the day Daura was sacked met separately with Seiyefa and Magu. It is however not clear if the visits had anything to do with the impending interrogation of the sacked DSS boss.

Meanwhile, Seiyefa has formally taken over at the headquarters of the agency in Abuja.

Seiyefa held an inaugural management meeting with directors and senior officers yesterday where he promised to constitute a team that would steer the leadership of the agency.

Daily Trust reports that the Senate refused to confirm the appointment of Magu as substantive chairman of the EFCC based on two DSS reports sent to the lawmakers by Daura.

EFCC freezes bank accounts of Benue, Akwa Ibom

The EFCC has also frozen bank accounts of Benue and Akwa Ibom state governments.

Attempts to get EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, yesterday to explain why the accounts were frozen, failed.

However, sources said the accounts were frozen after the EFCC made efforts to invite some officials of government to make statements on suspicious transactions on the bank accounts, but invitations were not honoured.

Lawyers said that the EFCC is enabled by the Money Laundering Act to enforce freeze orders on bank accounts being investigated by the commission, but the orders can be challenged in court by any individual or government.

They said when the EFCC froze Ekiti State account, the governor Ayo Fayose went to court to lift, but the anti-graft agency eventually won at the Court of Appeal.

Governors condemn freezing of govt accounts

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari has described the freezing of the account of the Benue State Government by the EFCC as unlawful.

Yari spoke yesterday when he met with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

“The freezing of any account of the state government, whether Benue or anywhere, is unconstitutional and is not right. That is shutting down government. Government must spend, most especially Benue that is facing insecurity challenges.

“Well, we don’t know why the EFCC took the action. But if indeed EFCC has frozen the account, from my point of view, it is wrong.

“But I believe this government will not sit down and oversee unlawful operations happening from the security agencies.

“From what happened yesterday, someone can understand that this government is following due process and laws of Nigeria.

“EFCC’s action in Benue is something that should be reversed,” he said.

Thibaut Courtois

Chelsea have confirmed the sale of Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid, with Mateo Kovacic coming to Stamford Bridge as part of the deal.

Courtois has been at the west London club since 2011, and wrested the No. 1 jersey from club favourite Petr Cech after shining during a loan spell with Atletico Madrid as a youngster.

In recent months, however, the Belgian has become increasingly unsettled, going so far as to skip training, while he has long been linked with a return to the Spanish capital where he spent three sparkling seasons.

And he will now line up at the Champions League holders after Madrid agreed a reported €35m (£31m/$40m) fee that will also see Kovacic spend a year on loan in London.

"Chelsea and Real Madrid have tonight agreed terms for the permanent transfer of Thibaut Courtois subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing a medical," Chelsea signalled in a statement published on the club's official website.

"Subject to the completion of the deal Mateo Kovacic will join the Blues on a season-long loan."

Real Madrid also confirmed the deal, revealing that the Belgium goalkeeper will put pen to paper on a contract that takes him up to the end of the 2023-24 season.

"Real Madrid and Chelsea have agreed the transfer of Thibaut Courtois, who will be linked to the club for the next six seasons," Madrid stated on their official website.

"After the medical that will be carried out on August 9, the player will be presented at 1pm (12pm BST, 7am ET) in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

"Later Courtois will step out for the first time on the Santiago Bernabeu turf with the Real Madrid shirt and speak to reporters in the press room."

Courtois played a total of 154 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Premier League on two occasions.

He also boasts ample experience in Spain, having made an identical number of appearances for Atletico which included a starring role in the Colchoneros' 2013-14 Liga triumph.

Courtois may not have to wait long to face his old club, with Real Madrid set to face Atletico in the UEFA Super Cup on August 15.

A teenage girl has been arrested in Edo state after she allegedly confessed to killing a 71-year-old woman.
The killer girl

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a teenager, Anna Amos, for the murder of a 71-year-old woman in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state, according to Punch.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday.

It was gathered that  deceased, Helen Adodo, died after her head was smashed with a stone at her residence on Guobadia Street, Benin.

It was learnt that Amos had been living with the septuagenarian, who was down with a stroke, since March 2018.

Unidentified persons had reportedly sneaked into the residence of the late Adodo at about 7am on Tuesday.

They were said to have blindfolded Amos before killing the septuagenarian.

The incident attracted residents and sympathisers, some of whom wailed as they saw the lifeless body of the victim.

A man, suspected to be the son of the deceased, expressed shock over his late mother’s death, adding that she did not have a disagreement with anyone in the neighbourhood.

A clip obtained by Punch on Wednesday showed the teenager confessing to the crime in the presence of some residents in the area.

In the clip, Amos alleged that she was possessed by a “spirit,” adding that she did not know the number of times the deceased was hit with the stone as she did not know what came over her.

The teenager, however, noted that the deceased did not offend her.

She said, “When I took some plates outside, I took a broom and swept the ground. I stood on the stone and looked up and down. After I did that, something entered my body. I stood on a stone again and looked up and down.

“I took the stone to the veranda and sat on it. Later, I entered the room and did not know when I hit her head with the stone. I did not know what came over me. It was a spirit. It told me to kill her. She did not offend me.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor, stated that the command received a distress call over the matter around 8.30am.

Nwabuzor also disclosed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

He said, “The (distress) caller said that two men came into the residence, murdered the woman and went away.

“However, it was revealed today (Wednesday) that a girl who was staying with her, Anna Amos, was the one that killed the woman. The Anna Amos has confessed that she killed the woman.

“Anna Amos is 14 years old and by law, she is still a minor. But we will do all we can to get to the root of this matter. We will not rely on the confession of that girl because it may not be the girl that is responsible for the killing of that woman.

“Perhaps somebody else did (killed her) and asked this little girl to own up as the culprit. Investigation is ongoing.”

Following his official defection to the All Progressives Congress, Akpabio has gotten an appointment from APC.
Senator Godswill Akpabio
Senator Godswill Akpabio is now the leader of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State.
National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole announced this on Wednesday at a mega rally in Ikot Ekpene that formally received Akpabio into the party.
Oshiomhole described Akpabio as an uncommon transformer for pulling a mammoth crowd to the Ikot Ekpene Stadium.
To him, the sea of heads at the stadium, the energy of the youth, their sheer determination, as evidenced by the fact that they had been waiting since morning, were indicators that they wanted a change in the state.
Oshiomhole said: “Today (yesterday) is historic in the life of our party (APC). For too long, when I was governor of Edo State, even now my successor, Godwin Obaseki, we have always said that in the whole of the Southsouth, it is only in Edo State that APC has a governor.
